Lorraine Newman is a script writer, television producer, voice actress and currently the executive producer of the BBC soap opera EastEnders.[1] Newman, who has worked on EastEnders for "nearly 20 years", received the role of executive producer when her predecessor stepped down in 2012.[2] She has become responsible for the introductions of Trish Barnes (Tessa Churchard), who was part of a criticised social worker storyline and Danny Pennant (Gary Lucy), a catalyst character introduced to comply with the departure of Syed Masood (Marc Elliott) and Christian Clarke (John Partridge). She has re-introduced characters Carly Wicks (Kellie Shirley) and Amira Masood (Preeya Kalidas), upgraded Rachel Bright, who plays Poppy Meadow to regular status, along with creating a new spinoff The B&B, featuring Kim Fox (Tameka Empson).

Career

Role in EastEnders

"She knows EastEnders like the back of her hand, so everyone feels very confident and happy because we're in safe hands. Lorraine knows the show and everybody knows Lorraine, so it doesn't feel like a new boss. You can trust her opinion on things because she knows the characters so well".[3]

Nitin Ganatra talking about Newman becoming the executive producer (2012).

Newman first began working on the BBC soap opera EastEnders age 19, as a script secretary, having worked for EastEnders, in 2012, for "nearly 20 years".[1] Newman is the first executive producer to have "occupied every editorial role on the show", according to John Yorke, the Controller of BBC Drama Production and New Talent.[1] He said in June 2012, "Starting as a script secretary she has risen through the ranks, finding herself as series producer and second in command for the last seven years".[1]

I always say that it's the team's achievement, not just mine, and my team have made it very easy. The fact that I've had Dominic Treadwell-Collins, Simon Ashdown, Lorraine Newman and Sharon Batten working with me consistently through this period has been brilliant. Much of the success and stability of the show is down to them. And almost all of the ideas are theirs, too.

In March 2012, it was announced that the then current executive producer of EastEnders, Bryan Kirkwood was to step down.[5] Newman, EastEnders "experienced series producer" took over the role, on a temporary basis.[5] Kirkwood said, "I'm delighted to leave the show in the capable hands of Lorraine Newman. Lorraine has been by my side every step of the way for the last two years and knows EastEnders inside out. I wish her and the show every future success".[5] Rita Simons who plays Roxy Mitchell in the soap said of Newman, "I haven't been at EastEnders under the reign of a female yet, so it'll be interesting to see what different choices she makes".[6] She added that Newman was doing "a sterling job".[6] In June 2012, it was announced that Newman would become the full-time executive producer.[1] Newman said of this, "It is an absolute honour to be taking on the role of executive producer at EastEnders on a permanent basis. I am looking forward to leading a talented creative team, cast and crew into 2013".[1] Yorke said, "Over the last few months, Newman has steered the show through a period of considerable change, and she's done an amazing job positioning the show for one of the most exciting autumns I can remember. With her depth of experience, her passion for the programme and her commitment to talent on-screen and off, she's the perfect person to take EastEnders forward".[1] Kirkwood's last episode aired on 13 July[7] and Newman first episode aired on 16 July.[8]

In November 2012 she said how she was finding being the executive producer, stating that she is "loving it".[2] She said it was a "real bonus" having "come up through the show over the years", as it means she has a "good understanding" of the show.[2] "I'm truly loving being at the helm".[2] She stated her main changes to the show since Kirkwood's departure, "I've been reinjecting the show with love and warmth, we can occasionally have a happy ending! Families are obviously at our core but I also think that friendships are absolutely key - they've been somewhat lacking of late, particularly for our ladies. I'd also like to stop the revolving door of characters and find that next generation, which I think is very important for the show".[2] She finished in saying, "I think a primary factor is the pacing of stories and making sure that is right. We also need to make sure that we're not telling too many relationship stories at the same time, because I think it diminishes their value, particularly where affairs are concerned. The perfect EastEnders story will have me laughing and crying, desperately wanting to know what happens next. Most importantly it will leave me feeling far more connected with the character than when it began. When we're creating storylines, you can't beat the goose-pimple test, it tells you all you need to know".[2]

As Executive Producer

One of Newman's first key tasks as temporary executive producer was to oversee production of a special episode featuring a live segment in which the character of Billy Mitchell (Perry Fenwick) carries the Olympic Torch as an official torch bearer in the 2012 Summer Olympics torch relay.[9] Carl Doran, creative head of the BBC’s Torch coverage, revealed the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) and EastEnders production team had worked for two years to organise this.[10] The episode was part of the official torch relay,[11] meaning the torch made a special detour from London[12] to the EastEnders set in BBC Elstree, Borehamwood.[13]. Billy Mitchell was also involved in one of Newman’s most controversial storylines, in his granddaughter Lola Pearce (Danielle Harold) has her baby taken away by social worker Trish Barnes. Real-life social workers were portrayed at this "unhelpful portrayal"[14], with the British Association of Social Workers (BASW) calling the BBC "too lazy and arrogant" to get correctly portray the child protection process, and saying that the baby was taken "without sufficient grounds to do so". Bridget Robb, acting chief of the BASW, said the storyline provoked "real anger among a profession well used to a less than accurate public and media perception of their jobs".[14]

Newman's first major cast change was reintroduction of Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) in August 2012[15][16], which Newman revealed had been a year in the planning.[17] Upon her return, Dean said that Newman was "very good at character insight".[18] Ben Mitchell (Joshua Pascoe) departed in the same month [19] following the conclusion of the storyline of Heather Trott (Cheryl Fergison)'s murder storyline, with Newman confirming the departure of Anthony Moon (Matt Laspinskas) soon afterwards.[20][21]

Newman agreed to Tameka Empson’s (pictured) suggestion of a spin-off featuring her character give Kim Fox), entitled The B&B.[22][23]

Newman later introduced Ava Hartman (Clare Perkins), the secret daughter of Cora Cross (Ann Mitchell), [24] and Ava's son Dexter (Khali Best)[25] [25], and also upgraded Poppy Meadow (Rachel Bright) from a recurring to a regular character.[26] Major departures under Newman’s tenure include Syed Masood (Marc Elliot) and Christian Clarke (John Partridge) in November 2012 [27] and villain Derek Branning (Jamie Foreman), killed off in the Christmas Day episode.[28][29]
