Star Citizen is an upcoming space trading and combat simulator video game for the PC. It consists of persistent world massively multiplayer, single-player campaign, and customizable private server components. Players take the role of spacefaring humans in a 30th-century Milky Way centered around the fictional U.E.E (United Empire of Earth), an analogue to the Roman Empire. A central theme of the game is citizenship (or lack thereof) in the U.E.E. Players are not automatically granted citizenship, rather must earn it if they desire, and in-game opportunities are influenced by it. Strong focus is placed on player interaction.[4][5] The game is slated to enter alpha phase in Q4 2013.

Star Citizen is currently being developed by Chris Roberts' Cloud Imperium Games, founded in 2011.[6] Roberts' previous works include games such as Wing Commander,[7] Privateer[8] and Freelancer.

Development

The developers of the game started a crowdfunding campaign in October 2012 on both the project website[9] and Kickstarter.[10] Funding quickly surpassed initial target goals[11] and subsequently additional stretch goals have been added to the funding campaign, most promising more or expanded content at release.[12] The initial end date of the funding campaign on the RSI website was later extended by 10 days to match the Kickstarter end date, both to enable additional funding as well as a joint special event for the end of the crowdfunding campaigns.[11] On 17 November 2012 (two days before crowdfunding closure) the game achieved the record for highest crowd-funded game-project ever with over $4.2 million (210% of the initial funding goal).[13] Between June 22 and 23, 2013 Star Citizen backers officially passed the $10,266,844 pledged to Pebble Watch, making Star Citizen the number one crowd funded project of all time.[14]

Although crowd funding has reached the cap "stretch goal" of 6 million, the crowd funding campaign still continues. The total funded by backers has reached $10,535,948 (project's website: $8,401,574, Kickstarter: $2,134,374) from 192,014 backers (project's website: 157,617, Kickstarter: 34,397) as of 07:54 hours GMT, June 24, 2013.[15] This makes Star Citizen by far the most successful crowd-funded video game to date, and has become the most successful crowd-funded product of all time (currently followed by the Pebble watch, which raised $10,266,845 from over 68,000 supporters).

Game engine

Development started in 2011 on a modified version of the CryEngine 3 game engine.[16]

Gameplay

Gameplay will be a single player type experience in a multiple player online world. Game matching for PvP or NPC will be done with considerations to the players type or preference (AI or Real players) . Play views will be in first person when in the cockpit as with typical flight simulators and first person view when on foot as most first person shooters.

Plot

The abridged history of Star Citizen.[68]

2075: Roberts Space Industries finishes the first self-sustaining quantum drive engine that can reach 1/100th the speed of light (3 million meters a second). Exploration of our solar system becomes a reality for governments and the rich.

2113: Terraforming a planet becomes a hot topic of debate.

2120: After years of trials and tests the governments of Earth financially back a plan to terraform Mars.

2125: Near the final stages of Mars terraforming 4,866 people die after planetary atmospheric processors make the new atmosphere unstable.

2140: Roberts Space Industries introduces their affordable ZEUS short-range explorer spaceship.

2157: Mars is terraformed and officially becomes classified as an oxygen-sustaining planet.

2214: Roberts Space Industries announces a new fusion engine capable of reaching speeds close to 1/10th the speed of light (30 million meters a second).

2232: A long-range colony spaceship called the ARTEMIS is launched with 5,000 on board. It's destination will take them over two hundred years to reach.

2262: Our solar system becomes a busy hub. Meanwhile ships start to disappear in an area of space dubbed The Neso Triangle.

2271: A film called JUMPER tells the story of famed astro-pioneer Nick Croshaw and his successful navigation through a jump-point.

2380: Planets in the Croshaw system are terraformed and three new jump-points are discovered. Meanwhile the governments of Earth decide to form the U.N.E (United Nations of Earth) to enter space exploration as a unified race.

2438: Humanity makes first contact with the Banu Protectorate; a collective race of planet-states who also just started to explore the universe. An Interstellar Peace and Trade Accord with the Banu is signed; a first for both sides.

2460: Earth has become overcrowded and Roberts Space Industries starts their "Breathe Free" ad campaign to encourage leaving Earth.

2516: Planet 342A, later named Terra, is discovered and established as a forward operating base for many jump points within reach. Over the years cities grow and give rise to new cultures.

2523: With a dozen planets under human ownership the U.N.E has become an antiquated system. The U.N.E restructures into the U.P.E (United Planets of Earth).

2530: Aggressive terraforming leads to a tense relations with a new alien race called The Xi’An Empire.

2541: Humans make first contact with the Tevarin; a race one hundred years behind Humans technologically. As a warrior race bent on controlling more worlds, their war over territory starts.

2546: To combat growing terrorist attacks the U.P.E establishes a new position of Prime Citizen to provide a deciding vote and voice.

2610: The Tevarin battle-fleet suffers a catastrophic defeat by Squadron 42. The U.P.E is transformed into the U.E.E (United Empire of Earth) with Imperator Messer I as leader.

2638: The political branch of Terra calls for sovereignty and are defeated by votes.

2681: The Vanduul start destroying small settlements.

2758: Vanduul warbands strike at Boro and retreat after the U.E.E fleet arrives.

2789: Terra independently brokered a treaty with the Xi’An Empire; flagging itself as a traitor to the U.E.E. Xi'An Empire recall their fighter patrols away from U.E.E ships.

2792: After a brutal crackdown the citizens of Earth turn on and capture Imperator Messer XIX so ending the Messer dictatorship.

2795: The Fair Chance Act is enacted which protects the lives and well-being of species and establishes a humanitarian process of terraforming planets that maintains ecological security.

2800: An orbital platform called The Ark is unveiled to an assembly of representatives from The Xi’An Empire, The Banu Protectorate and Tevarin. The Ark will act as a political neutral zone where representatives can meet to resolve problems through discourse.

2872: The U.E.E unveils Project Archangel; an initiative to literally build a planet from scratch (dubbed "SynthWorlds"). The technology is made available to all races.

2920: Terra starts to reassert its ideas for sovereignty under the guise of the doomed-to-fail Archangel project.

2928: Kelos Costigan, a Vanduul, starts campaigning for U.E.E Imperator.

2934: Squadron 42 has become the stuff of legends and entertaining stories.

2942: (The Star Citizen game world begins.)
