== MoS and all caps ==

Colonel, I capped my comments at your FLC, but didn't want to leave you hanging on the question you asked with your last response. [[MOS:ALLCAPS]] states that editors should "Reduce newspaper headlines and other titles from all caps to sentence case or title case." This is why a lot of reviewers check the references for all caps; you'd be amazed how many times this comes up at FAC and FLC. There used to be information on how typographic figures are allowable in the MoS, but I can't find it at the moment. Who knows whether it's still somewhere in there, but from my experience simple changes like removing all caps or making dash-related fixes are considered good practice. Hope this helps. :* I appreciate you letting me know. 8 years writing articles (1 year under this login) and I'm always learning new things about policy. Thanks again for helping with the FLC.--[[User:ColonelHenry|ColonelHenry]] ([[User talk:ColonelHenry#top|talk]]) 01:59, 6 August 2013 (UTC)

Silver Decoy Winery has been renamed Working Dog Winery[http://www.workingdogwinerynj.com/index.html]. [[User:DavidinNJ|DavidinNJ]] ([[User talk:DavidinNJ|talk]]) 16:50, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
:* Was it sold? Was there a trademark dispute? From a PR standpoint, I think if it were the same owners, it's a bad move...SDW wines had awards and had a good showing at the Judgment of Princeton...a name change divorces the product from its goodwill and legacy. Just on aesthetics, I don't think wine-enthusiasts would like to associate dogs and wine, much less working dogs.--[[User:ColonelHenry|ColonelHenry]] ([[User talk:ColonelHenry#top|talk]]) 16:57, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
::Not sure yet why they changed their name. About a month ago, I found out that they were going to change their names - their website was down, and it said that they were waiting to hear from the Trademark Office about a new name. Today, I went to their website and saw the new name. I wondering if some of the owners left, and they had a dispute. Website now shows 5 owners, whereas they once had 8.
::I agree that the name change is a disaster. Besides the fact that Silver Decoy had built up a reputation, the new name is really awful. I doubt that the average wine drinking wants to drink something called Working Dog. Even if they had to abandon the name Silver Decoy, I would have picked something a lot better - maybe "Windsor Vineyards" after the town that they are located in. To make it worse, their logo is a dog's paw print. [[User:DavidinNJ|DavidinNJ]] ([[User talk:DavidinNJ|talk]]) 17:10, 14 August 2013 (UTC)
:::Working Dog makes for a better craft beer/micro brew trade name. Windsor Vineyards would be infinitely better. --[[User:ColonelHenry|ColonelHenry]] ([[User talk:ColonelHenry#top|talk]]) 17:12, 14 August 2013 (UTC)

Too late? Only today I found time to look at the FAC that I found mentioned on the talk of [[User:SilkTork|SilkTork]]. (If you look for "Tree" on my talk you know why.) Now it seems too late, so I mention my observations here.
* You know me, I think an infobox would help a random reader to orientation. Infobox poem is new to me, and lacks some features I have in musical ones, - this suggestion is not real, but could perhaps get there (The author would - as it is now - appear in small print below the image). For a first image, I would choose the cover instead of the person, because it suggests literature more obviously.

* I am surprised that names of popular artists are mentioned in the lead, before a reader who doesn't know the poem (like me) knows more about it.

* Now that I know it (thank you), I am a bit surprised at the plural of the title, but it makes sense thinking that it s not one specific tree or one image that the poet describes.

* The publisher of the first collection is not easy to find.

"Hungry mouth" is an idea that never crosssed my mind looking at a tree ;) --[[User:Gerda Arendt|Gerda Arendt]] ([[User talk:Gerda Arendt|talk]]) 10:24, 31 August 2013 (UTC)
:: I'm not a big fan of putting an infobox on this one...it's a little too simple and too simple tends to be misleading and uninformative--and I see infobox parameters where information is apparently entered (i.e. lines = 6 ...there are actually 12 lines arranged in 6 couplets) but doesn't show up. Is this a coding problem? This would be one instance where I'd oppose it because it doesn't add much to the article and would essentially becomes clutter.
:: I'm probably going to put the article up at WP:GAN (it's easily GA-criteria ready) later today after the FAC-bot updates things. The work does deserve some recognition--I thought it was ready for FAC, but apparently I was severely and resoundingly wrong. Frankly, I'd like to move on to other things for the next few months and maybe then return to take another look.
:: As for the publisher, [[George H. Doran Company]] has been out of business for 86 years. --[[User:ColonelHenry|ColonelHenry]] ([[User talk:ColonelHenry#top|talk]]) 15:10, 31 August 2013 (UTC)
:::For lines: [[Template talk:Infobox poem#Lines|I asked]]. For publisher: it's history even if no more business. General: [[Wikipedia talk:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Infoboxes/Proposed decision#Uninvolved user, late to this discussion|see also]], I found it elucidating. --[[User:Gerda Arendt|Gerda Arendt]] ([[User talk:Gerda Arendt|talk]]) 22:32, 1 September 2013 (UTC)
::::Thanks for asking...with the poetry infobox, optimally I'd could be convinced if it offered more information. I just think 3-4 pieces of information don't really make an infobox worth it. A couple of critiques on it...(1) the title and author information is outside the box...I am not keen on the aesthetics of that. (2) information such as...
::::Genre: Lyric poetry
::::Lines: 12
::::Rhyme scheme: aa bb cc dd ee aa
::::Meter: Iambic tetrameter
::::Written: 2 February 1913
::::First published: August 1913 issue of ''Poetry''
::::Collection: Trees and other poems (1914)
::::I have to look into this infobox a little bit more. Would you be interested in doing the GA review?
::::On another note, I added a mention and link to the publisher in the article. I am a little surprised that I didn't do that before. --[[User:ColonelHenry|ColonelHenry]] ([[User talk:ColonelHenry#top|talk]]) 22:44, 1 September 2013 (UTC)
:::::The lines are back. - About your other wishes: please discuss at the template talk (link above). I would also prefer to have the box line surround the title, as in {{tl|infobox musical composition}} /see Example 2). - I like short infoboxes, - to give a random reader an at a glance idea of place and time is reason enough for me to have one. - Sorry, I have no time for the review this deserves. Look at my user page: almost no new article even. The case mentioned with Rilke is still open. The one who initiated it just deleted his user and talk page (the latter was [[User talk:Ched|restored]]), - makes me so sad. --[[User:Gerda Arendt|Gerda Arendt]] ([[User talk:Gerda Arendt|talk]]) 09:30, 2 September 2013 (UTC)
::::::I can agree with shorter-infoboxes....the ones for religious buildings, rivers and municipalities have just become incredibly long. I hate when an infobox breaks out of the lede and creeps into other sections. Which case regarding Rilke? I'm afraid I'm familiar with Ched or his work...I pretty much keep to myself in my small corner which rarely frustrated me and never wade into the inside baseball (I've been asked four times now if I wanted to be an admin and I laugh). If you need some help with some of your projects, I could be of service. I know quite a bit of Bach having been heavily involved in classical music all my life.--[[User:ColonelHenry|ColonelHenry]] ([[User talk:ColonelHenry#top|talk]]) 12:26, 2 September 2013 (UTC)
:::::::Remember Duino Elegies, I talked about my friend possibly being banned for having "disrupted" a TFA in 2012? I just left the two projects which find me disruptive, but will privately stay with Bach and Britten. My biggest project: [[Mass in B minor structure]]. Ched had initiated the case, trying to help us, I guess. (We didn't want it, that's for sure.) Not without irony in the context: "[[Talk:Ben Gunn (campaigner)|peace and reconciliation]]" on the Main page, - I love it! --[[User:Gerda Arendt|Gerda Arendt]] ([[User talk:Gerda Arendt|talk]]) 12:36, 2 September 2013 (UTC)

== Working Dog Winery ==

I read a Star-Ledger article today that Silver Decoy Winery changed its name to Working Dog because a winery in California had a similar name. It's bit strange because the winery had used the name Silver Decoy for over 10 years, and I cannot find the Silver Decoy in California. There's a Decoy Winery in the Napa Valley, but no Silver Decoy. I was looking through and didn't come across any other individual pages like these. I might have been against the idea at first, but I am willing to help contribute and I believe this is a great way to have an organized list of districts in each county for the reader. ==Blackcurrant GA==
I have dealt with many but not all of the points you raised in your review. I can find no information on some of the suggestions you make but have expanded various sections where I have found good sources. I am thinking the "Cultivars" section is unsatisfactory. The list of cultivars came from 2 different British sources and these varieties are not necessarily grown in other parts of the world. Also, many of the varieties mentioned have been largely superseded by newer varieties. I would prefer to have a section entitled "Research" in which I would include information on the new varieties being bred in Britain, Eastern Europe, New Zealand and North America, information which is scattered around under different section headings at the moment. Do you approve this course of action?

Please do not feel there is any urgency about the Onion GA review as I am also busy on an FAC at the moment and would like not to have too many things going on at once. When I nominated the two articles for GA, I thought it might be weeks before a reviewer stepped forward. [[User:Cwmhiraeth|Cwmhiraeth]] ([[User talk:Cwmhiraeth|talk]]) 13:33, 10 September 2013 (UTC)
* I'll take another look at Blackcurrant in a few hours and get back to you on your question. At first glance, that seems to be a good idea...you might want to consider calling it "Research and breeding" or something that gives a reader an indication it's about developing cultivars/hybrids rather than something about curing cancer. I am not the kind of guy who keeps or insists upon deadlines, so with the GAN for Onion, I was planning on reviewing it today and if it takes you a month to address it, that's cool with me. What FAC? I'll be glad to take a look there as well if you'd like.--[[User:ColonelHenry|ColonelHenry]] ([[User talk:ColonelHenry#top|talk]]) 13:47, 10 September 2013 (UTC)

==GANs and FAC==
Thank you for your GA reviews of Blackcurrant and Onion. I had expected that you would require me to do more work on the latter before you approved it.

With regard to your comments at the Sea FAC, the Culture section was recently separated off from the main article and the "grocery list" paragraph you see is an attempt to replace it with a summary. We can work on improving it. What exactly did you have in mind with regard to the references? With multiple references to one book such as Stow, it seems better to cite it as a source rather than do a full citation every time it is referred to, and a previous reviewer asked us to do likewise with the other book sources cited more than once. :With the GA, it was already largely there, just needed a little tweaking (not of the methamphetamine kind, of course). The difference is GA shouldn't be as stressful and as intense as an FAC. It requires only "breadth" by addressing major aspects, doesn't insist on "comprehensiveness" that an FAC demands. The first question I ask when doing a GA review (and I've done 11 as ColonelHenry, about 150 under another name years ago) is "would I approach this article differently if it were my work?" With Blackcurrant and Onion, the answer was both "no, but there are a few things that stand out missing...more with the blackcurrant article than with the onion article"--if the answer were yes, it would have been a task. The writing was good, the structure and content was good, the images were without use problems, the citations were in order...aside from stability and no POV agenda (which I rarely come across in GANs), that's pretty much all GA requires. FAC, as you have seen, is the gauntlet...which I've done 4 times this year (one surprising fail), almost a 5th shot at the title.
:I can try to take a look at how I'd improve the "In culture" section for flow, might take a day or two.
:I tend to avoid the "short citation" method, I don't find them informative and it's an inconvenience in a larger article when your run your mouse over the number see "Stow, 71-72" and then scroll all the way down to find the reference. I prefer full citations because they're more informative. In my work, I find the "rp" template quite effective.
:For instance:
:* First reference: <nowiki><ref name="ref1">Last name, first name. Name of Source. (publishing & year).</ref>{{rp|pp.71-72}}</nowiki>
:* Second reference: <nowiki><ref name="ref1" />{{rp|p.75}}</nowiki>
:Now, at the cited material, you'll see:
:* First reference....[1][pp.71-72] in superscript
:* Second reference...[1][p.75] in superscript.
: And down below you just see in the references section "a b Last name, first name. Name of Source. (publishing & year)."
: It's just an idea for you to consider. If you'd like to see it in action in an article, check my recent work on [[Kirkpatrick Chapel]].--[[User:ColonelHenry|ColonelHenry]] ([[User talk:ColonelHenry#top|talk]]) 13:03, 18 September 2013 (UTC)
::Thank you. Actually, I see that Chiswick Chap has been through the book references (Stow etc.) and dealt with them in a different way. I will have a go at making the Culture section read more fluently and then you can maybe make further improvements when you have time. [[User:Cwmhiraeth|Cwmhiraeth]] ([[User talk:Cwmhiraeth|talk]]) 13:20, 18 September 2013 (UTC)
::: Further to your ping, I've replaced the repeated refs (Stow) with RP style as above. Cwmhiraeth and I have also smoothed and somewhat extended the Culture section which I hope is now satisfactorily readable and informative. --- [[User:Chiswick Chap|Chiswick Chap]] ([[User talk:Chiswick Chap|talk]]) 18:42, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

Revision as of 12:13, 28 September 2013

Hey I noticed you created the above page, and I was wondering if you were planning on creating pages for the remaining 20 counties for the state. I was looking through and didn't come across any other individual pages like these. I might have been against the idea at first, but I am willing to help contribute and I believe this is a great way to have an organized list of districts in each county for the reader. Thank you for all you do. Tinton5 (talk) 17:52, 7 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Other volcanoes in NJ

Hello. In regards to your requesting additional information about other volcanoes in NJ, here is what I have on Snake Hill.

1) Snake Hill described as a volcanic neck.
Manspeizer, W. and P. E. Olsen. 1981.. P. 25-103 in G. W. Hobbs, ed. Field Guide to the Geology of the Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Tertiary Rocks of New Jersey and the Central Hudson Valley. Petroleum Exploration Society of New York, New York, NY. PDF

2) Snake Hill stated to be "a Jurassic volcanic plug related to the Palisades sill"
New Jersey Geological Survey Open File Report OFR 92-1 - The Palisades Sill and Watchung Basalt Flows, Northern New Jersey and Southeastern New York: A Geological Summary and Field Guide PDF

3) Laurel Hill (Snake Hill) stated mutliple times to be a volcanic neck.
Puffer, J. H., & Benimoff, A. I. (1997). Fractionation, hydrothermal alteration, and wall-rock contamination of an early Jurassic diabase intrusion: Laurel Hill, New Jersey. The Journal of Geology, 99-110. Limited Preview or free access with register

Rutan Hill is itself a volcanic plug, just like Snake Hill. Here is an excerpt from the "Geology of Sussex County in Brief" (1969) by geologist Carol S. Lucey, working for the State of New Jersey. You can download the PDF from the state's website.

"Volcanic activity accompanied folding and faulting of the Cambrian and Ordovician formations. Evidence of this activity is found in Rutan Hill, a conical structure near Beemerville which is believed to be an old volcano. The sides of the volcano have been eroded away, leaving the plug or neck. This is the pipelike portion through which lava rose to feed the volcano."

I believe the document you refer to which lists Rutan as the only volcano is out of date, since it was printed in 1940. Henry Barnard Kümmel clearly states that there is "no data at hand to determine whether these Triassic lava flows originated from a volcanic vent, or whether they are of the nature of fissure flows." But that was 70 years ago. We know a lot more today. I would like to point out too that Kümmel also describes Rutan Hill as a plug:

"[The hill]... presents some characteristics of a volcanic plug, the trap rock with the included fragments representing the lava which solidified deep in the throat of the volcanic cone which may once have marked this site."

Alright, so this is probably getting long winded, but my point is that if both Rutan Hill and Snake Hill are volcanic plugs, then we are in fact comparing apples to apples, and if we can call one an extinct volcano, then we can say the same about the other. Please let me know if anything is not clear.

As for Prospect Hill, the character of the vent was likely a fissure, so I can concede that granting it the title of 'volcano' may be a bit much. However, it is worth noting that Prospect Hill is composed of extrusive basalt and not intrusive magma. Lithium6ion (talk) 02:15, 21 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • Checking. If we exclude fissure type vents, which were common in the Jurassic, then off the top of my head the other one that comes to mind is Little Snake Hill, which is sort of a companion to Snake Hill. It is mentioned briefly here (USFWS). There are other nepheline syenite intrusions in the area of Rutan, but I don't know if any of the others are classified as or suspected to be plugs. I believe they are merely dikes, but I will confirm that if possible. Oh, and sorry for not using whisper. I overlooked your banner! Lithium6ion (talk) 02:39, 21 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • UPDATE - According to this paper, the area of Rutan Hill is pretty complex. The long and short is there is only one plug. However, there are outlying diatremes, which is pretty neat because it implies there may have been smaller cones (probably explosive) situated on or near the main volcano. Still looking to make sure I haven't missed anything elsewhere in the state. Lithium6ion (talk) 02:55, 21 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
