==Disambiguation link fixing one-day contest==

I have decided to put on a mini-contest within the [[Wikipedia:Disambiguation pages with links/November 2013|November 2013 monthly disambiguation contest]], on Saturday, November 23 (UTC). I will personally give a $20 Amazon.com gift card to the disambiguator who fixes the most links on that server-day ([https://tools.wmflabs.org/dplbot/ch/dab_challenge.php see the project page for details on scoring points]). Since we are not geared up to do an automated count for that day, at 00:00, 23 November 2013 (UTC) (which is 7:00 PM on November 22, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the project page leaderboard. I will presume that anyone who is not already listed on the leaderboard has precisely <i>nine</i> edits. At 01:00, 24 November 2013 (UTC) (8:00 PM on November 23, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the leaderboard at that time (the extra hour is to give the board time to update), and I will determine from that who our winner is. I <i>will</i> credit links fixed by turning a [[WP:DABCONCEPT]] page into an article, but you'll have to let me know me that you did so. Here's to a fun contest. Note that according to the [[Wikipedia:Disambiguation pages with links/The Daily Disambig|Daily Disambig]], we currently have under 256,000 disambiguation links to be fixed. If everyone in the disambiguation link fixers category were to fix 500 links, we would have them all done - so aim high! Cheers!

==Proposal for fixing links to potentially ambiguous primary topic redirects and primary topic titles==

I propose to amend [[Wikipedia:Redirect#Do not "fix" links to redirects that are not broken]] to permit "fixing" links from potentially ambiguous redirects, where doing so makes it easier to find and fix mistaken links to that redirect.

For example, [[CIA]] redirects to [[Central Intelligence Agency]], and it is not disputed that the primary topic of "CIA" is "Central Intelligence Agency"; nevertheless, there are [[CIA (disambiguation)|many other lesser-known meanings of "CIA"]] to which editors sometimes intend to link, such as [[Culinary Institute of America]], [[Chartered Institute of Arbitrators]], and [[Calgary International Airport]]. In order to find and fix accidental links to [[CIA]] that are intended for one of these other meanings, I would like to change all existing links intended to point to [[Central Intelligence Agency]] to piped, direct links to that target (i.e., <nowiki>[[Central Intelligence Agency|CIA]]</nowiki> links).

I would further like to do something similar for primary topic titles for which other prominent uses exist. For example, links are often made to [[Apple]] and [[Mouse]] that are intended for [[Apple Inc.]] and [[Mouse (computing)]]. I would like to change all of the links that are intended to point to [[Apple]] and [[Mouse]] into redirects that are piped through [[Apple (fruit)]] and [[Mouse (animal)]], so that it will be easier to find and fix accidental links to these pages that are intended for the other pages at issue.

==DAB AWB wish list==
I would like:
*AWB disambiguation to recognize disambiguation redirect titles.
*AWB disambiguation to fix titles in '''<nowiki>{{disambiguation needed|Foo}}</nowiki>''' templates.
*The ability to get all the "what links here" lists for a list of articles at once.
*The ability to generate lists of solutions for multiple disambiguation links at once, and see those in the disambiguation window.

==DAB points==
With close to a million incorrect links to fix, the most effective way to do it is with a program like AWB that loads up all links to a particular page. By excluding the tens of thousands of intentional links from this process, we save enough time that we are actually finally getting ahead of the curve. As long as there are disambiguation pages, there will be errant links to them, and we will need some means to avoid the distraction of those intentional links.

A redirect that does not contain the phrase "(disambiguation)" would not show up on the "what links here" page as redirecting through a "foo (disambiguation)" page. For a page like [[John Smith]], if the dozens of intentional incoming links did not redirect through [[John Smith (disambiguation)]], people trying to fix incorrect links would waste hours checking pages containing intentional links that could not be fixed.

On January 24, 1925, five days after the Senate Judiciary Committee had recommended Stone's confirmation, Senator [[Thomas J. Walsh]]—Wheeler's Montana colleague and legal counsel—convinced the Senate to return the nomination to committee for further review. Although President Coolidge refused to withdraw the nomination, he agreed to an unprecedented compromise. He would allow Stone to become the first Supreme Court nominee in history to appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee. On January 28, 1925, Stone's masterful performance during five hours of public session testimony cleared the way for his quick confirmation.
Senator Wheeler soon won acquittal of all charges. Not until 1955, however, did the Senate Judiciary Committee routinely adopt the practice, based on the precedent established by the Stone nomination, of requiring all Supreme Court nominees to appear in person.

===[[John Johnson, Sr.]]===
<ref name="Marbury">William J. Marbury, "[http://www.msa.md.gov/megafile/msa/speccol/sc2900/sc2908/html/chancery.html The High Court of Chancery and the Chancellors of Maryland]", Report of the Tenth Annual Meeting of the Maryland State Bar Association, (1905), p. 137-155.</ref>

Upon the death of Kilty, Johnson was the one man marked for the place. He was immediately appointed and accepted.

I regret that of this great lawyer and judge whom tradition has raised so high, I am unable to give anything but the barest outline. The incidents of his early life seem to be lost in obscurity.

He was born in 1770. Where his elementary or professional education was obtained I cannot find. He settled in Annapolis and there practiced his profession. He was appointed Attorney-General October 18, 1806, to succeed John Thomson Mason. This appointment will give some idea of the standing of Johnson when it is remembered that his predecessors had been Luther Martin, William Pinkney and Mason.

Chief Justice Taney in his Autobiography, mentions John Johnson along with Luther Martin, Philip Barton Key, John Thomson Mason, Arthur Scharff, James Winchester as a leader of the bar when he went to Annapolis to study law in the first decade of the last century. In other places he speaks of him with honor.

He held the Attorney-Generalship until 25th of March, 1811, when he was appointed Judge of the Court of Appeals to fill a vacancy caused by the death of Judge Gantt.

It is from the ten years' service upon the Court of Appeals that the best estimate of Johnson's worth can be obtained. Here he certainly stood near the front in learning and ability. This is high praise when it is recalled that J. T. Chase and Buchanan were his colleagues.Pratt vs. Flamer, 5 H. & J., 14, may be cited as one of the many able opinions while on the Bench of the Court of Appeals. This is a good illustration of his sound reasoning and deep learning.

He was appointed Chancellor of the State October 15, 1821. We find the same difficulty in judging Johnson as a chancellor as in the case with all his predecessors-the lack of reports. His term was comparatively short and few of his opinions are given in the report's of the Court of Appeals, most of the cases that went up on appeal contain the bare decree of the Chancellor below.

He was one of the Boundary Commissioners to settle the dispute between Maryland and Virginia, and died of fever while in discharge of his duties in the western part of the State. This occurred July 30, 1824.

John Johnson was the son of Robert Johnson, who was said to have been a revolutionary officer. This cannot be positively ascertained.

He was a Presidential Elector in 1816.

This nomination is directed towards '''all IP talk page archives created by [[User:SharedIPArchiveBot]]''', of which [[User talk:192.148.117.90/Archive 1]] is a typical example. This bot does nothing but create archives of IP talk pages, basically preserving in space that no one will ever visit a duplicate of the record of edits already contained in the history of every IP talk page. For example, with respect to the User talk page noted in this nomination, the exact same material can be seen [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:192.148.117.90&oldid=462772839 right here], [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:192.148.117.90&oldid=487979573 here], and [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:192.148.117.90&oldid=487979573 here], with no need for a separate page. There are many things Wikipedia is not; among them, Wikipedia is not a collection of IP talk page edits. If Internet Archive or some service like that wants to have these thousands of pages, that's fine, but let's stick to building an encyclopedia. If I have missed anyone, please feel free to let me know. I do not know of any of these who have asked not to receive messages, and I therefore intend to provide a notice to all editors who do not respond to this post or otherwise indicate that they are aware of this discussion, or do not wish to receive a notice of this discussion. (I note that [[User:GoodDay|GoodDay]], [[User:Kauffner|Kauffner]], and [[User:TJ Spyke|TJ Spyke]] are now indef-blocked, and [[User:jæs|jæs]] is "retired"; I will not contact blocked or retired users). I propose to use the following language for this notice:

{{cquote|Greetings! A proposal has been made at [[(title of page)]], to change the title of the article, -_-_-_-, to -_-_-. This notification is provided to all editors who have previously participated in move requests relating to this subject. Cheers!}}

;Structure of the discussion:
Because I anticipate the potential for a lengthy discussion with a relatively large number of participants, the discussion will be initiated on a dedicated subpage. Links to this subpage will be provided in all notices, and on this talk page, as soon as the subpage is prepared. Because of the potential for IP mischief in a well-publicized discussion, I intend to preemptively semi-protect this subpage, so that only editors with established accounts will be able to participate in the discussion. IP editors who wish to comment or provide evidence for or against the proposed move will still be able to comment on the regular talk page.

The discussion page will be presented in the traditional discussion format used for lengthy policy discussions, nominations for adminship, and other such processes, with evidence and argument presented by the proposer, followed by a section for editors indicating support, a section for editors indicating opposition, a section for editors indicating neutrality, and a section for discussion. I will request that statements of support, opposition, or neutrality, will be prefaced by a "#" so that the sections can remain neatly numbered. I will further ask that editors avoid clogging up the voting sections with discussion.

;Conduct of the discussion:
[[Wikipedia:Requested moves]] notes that "[r]equests are generally processed after seven days". Given the advance notice of this discussion, I see no reason to deviate from that practice. In order to avoid any potential disruption caused by a non-admin closure or a perceived "supervote" closure, I will ask for a panel of three uninvolved administrators who have no interest in the outcome of the discussion to oversee the conduct of the discussion, address any issues that may arise during the discussion, and close the discussion at the end of seven days.

Unless there is a reasonable argument that more time is needed to carry out these steps prior to the initiation of this move request, I will file this request as stated above. I would respectfully request that no move requests be filed with respect to this article prior to the one which I now propose to file. If any editors onject to the filing of this request as proposed, please feel free to take whatever procedural steps you believe to be necessary. As I have now stated my resolve to file this move request on January 15th, I expect that any objections will be initiated in time to be effectively resolved by the proposed filing date.

===Project notices===
Greetings! A proposal will be made on Wednesday, January 15, 2013, to change the title of the article, -_-_-_-, to -_-_-. This notification is provided because this article is listed as being of interest to this project. Cheers!

I have decided to put on a mini-contest within the November 2013 monthly disambiguation contest, on Saturday, November 23 (UTC). I will personally give a $20 Amazon.com gift card to the disambiguator who fixes the most links on that server-day (see the project page for details on scoring points). Since we are not geared up to do an automated count for that day, at 00:00, 23 November 2013 (UTC) (which is 7:00 PM on November 22, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the project page leaderboard. I will presume that anyone who is not already listed on the leaderboard has precisely nine edits. At 01:00, 24 November 2013 (UTC) (8:00 PM on November 23, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the leaderboard at that time (the extra hour is to give the board time to update), and I will determine from that who our winner is. I will credit links fixed by turning a WP:DABCONCEPT page into an article, but you'll have to let me know me that you did so. Here's to a fun contest. Note that according to the Daily Disambig, we currently have under 256,000 disambiguation links to be fixed. If everyone in the disambiguation link fixers category were to fix 500 links, we would have them all done - so aim high! Cheers!

All draft/userspace pages

Federal Claims judges

I propose to amend Wikipedia:Redirect#Do not "fix" links to redirects that are not broken to permit "fixing" links from potentially ambiguous redirects, where doing so makes it easier to find and fix mistaken links to that redirect.

For example, CIA redirects to Central Intelligence Agency, and it is not disputed that the primary topic of "CIA" is "Central Intelligence Agency"; nevertheless, there are many other lesser-known meanings of "CIA" to which editors sometimes intend to link, such as Culinary Institute of America, Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, and Calgary International Airport. In order to find and fix accidental links to CIA that are intended for one of these other meanings, I would like to change all existing links intended to point to Central Intelligence Agency to piped, direct links to that target (i.e., [[Central Intelligence Agency|CIA]] links).

I would further like to do something similar for primary topic titles for which other prominent uses exist. For example, links are often made to Apple and Mouse that are intended for Apple Inc. and Mouse (computing). I would like to change all of the links that are intended to point to Apple and Mouse into redirects that are piped through Apple (fruit) and Mouse (animal), so that it will be easier to find and fix accidental links to these pages that are intended for the other pages at issue.

DAB AWB wish list

I would like:

  • AWB disambiguation to recognize disambiguation redirect titles.
  • AWB disambiguation to fix titles in {{disambiguation needed|Foo}} templates.
  • The ability to get all the "what links here" lists for a list of articles at once.
  • The ability to generate lists of solutions for multiple disambiguation links at once, and see those in the disambiguation window.

DAB points

With close to a million incorrect links to fix, the most effective way to do it is with a program like AWB that loads up all links to a particular page. By excluding the tens of thousands of intentional links from this process, we save enough time that we are actually finally getting ahead of the curve. As long as there are disambiguation pages, there will be errant links to them, and we will need some means to avoid the distraction of those intentional links.

A redirect that does not contain the phrase "(disambiguation)" would not show up on the "what links here" page as redirecting through a "foo (disambiguation)" page. For a page like John Smith, if the dozens of intentional incoming links did not redirect through John Smith (disambiguation), people trying to fix incorrect links would waste hours checking pages containing intentional links that could not be fixed.

Gordon Grundy was the president of Studebaker Canada Ltd. in 1966, but the company failed to earn profits sufficient to justify continued investment, and was closed.

Todd Wood, commanding officer of the 184th Infantry Regiment, was the highest ranking United States military officer to be killed in the War in Iraq.

On January 24, 1925, five days after the Senate Judiciary Committee had recommended Stone's confirmation, Senator Thomas J. Walsh—Wheeler's Montana colleague and legal counsel—convinced the Senate to return the nomination to committee for further review.

User:SharedIPArchiveBot IP talk page archives

User talk:192.148.117.90/Archive 1 (edit | subject | history | links | watch | logs)

This nomination is directed towards all IP talk page archives created by User:SharedIPArchiveBot, of which User talk:192.148.117.90/Archive 1 is a typical example. This bot does nothing but create archives of IP talk pages, basically preserving in space that no one will ever visit a duplicate of the record of edits already contained in the history of every IP talk page. For example, with respect to the User talk page noted in this nomination, the exact same material can be seen right here, here, and here, with no need for a separate page. There are many things Wikipedia is not; among them, Wikipedia is not a collection of IP talk page edits. If Internet Archive or some service like that wants to have these thousands of pages, that's fine, but let's stick to building an encyclopedia. bd2412 T 02:05, 27 August 2013 (UTC)
