Dedh Ishqiya is a 2014 Indian comedy thriller Hindi film directed by Abhishek Chaubey starring Madhuri Dixit, Arshad Warsi, Naseeruddin Shah, and Huma Qureshi in the lead roles. It is a sequel of Ishqiya and is produced by Raman Maroo and Vishal Bharadwaj. The film has released worldwide on January 10, 2014, with 1200 screens release in India.[3][4] The trailer of the film was released on November 8, 2013.

Plot

Khalujan (Naseeruddin Shah) and his nephew Babban (Arshad Warsi), a thief duo, pose as a Nawab and his attendant, and manage to run away with a prized necklace from a jewellery shop. In the police chase they get separated, while Khalujaan is hurt. Months later Babban traces Khalujan again, this time posing a nawab, at poetry contest. It is a mushaira organized by Begum Para (Madhuri Dixit), the widowed Begum of Mahmudabad as per the wishes of her deceased husband. The winner would win the Begum as bride and in turn become the Nawab of Mahudabad. However, by the opening night, Babban traces Khalujaan. Soon he falls in love with Begum Para's assistant, Muniya (Huma Qureshi), while Khalujaan has his heart set on Begum herself. Gradually the story progress a plot to kidnap the Begum is revealed. To complicate the matters there is another suitor in the fray, a local MLA-gangster Jaan Mohammed (Vijay Raaz), who posing as a poet, making a poet Nawab Italwi (Manoj Pahwa) write poetry for him in captivity. Khalujaan tries to impress the Begum by gifting her the prized necklace they stole earlier but on the final day Begum declares Jaan Mohammed as her to be husband and new nawab of Mahmudabad. Disappointed Khalujaan approaches begum with a gun just before a masked man kidnaps her at gun point. Khalujaan chases them and blocks their way only to discover that the masked man was Babban and Begum has plotted her own kidnapping to extort money from the new to be nawab (now Jaan Mohammad) as the Begum was left bankrupt by her late husband. Babban calls Jaan Mohammed to bring 10 crore ransom money to a railway station who now is aware of Begum's plan. All four reaches the railway station to collect money but finds the bag empty and surrounded by Jaan Mohammad's goons. Much to their good fortune Nawab Italwi arrives with police force and cross-firing starts. Begum and Muniya escapes from the situation leaving behind Babban and Khalujaan only to be arrested. One and half months later both gets bail and a massage from Begum and Muniya who are now settled in an unknown city by selling off the prized necklace. Movie ends with the duo once again surrounded by Mushtaq (Salman Shahid) and his gang.

At a private party, the producers of Ishqiya, Shemaroo and Vishal Bhardwaj, announced the sequel with the same cast and crew.[5] In April 2012, Madhuri Dixit signed on for the sequel of Ishqiya, her first film after moving back to the country in November 2011 to play a grey character called Shahi Begum.[6] The two male leads Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi were retained from the original.[7] The role of supporting actress first was offered to Asin Thottumkal but, she refused to work in a supporting role in Dedh Ishqiya and in one interview she said that she thought that her role is not very attractive so, she left the project. Kangana Ranaut then signed Dedh Ishqiya [8] and said she was going to start shooting soon.[9] But in December 2012 she opted out due to date issues.[10] Huma Qureshi replaced Kangna Ranaut.[11] Arshad Warsi stated that he was paired with Huma and Madhuri was paired opposite Naseeruddin Shah.[12]

Filming

The shooting was initially to start in September and was shifted to November later, but it was postponed even further.[13] The shooting of Dedh Ishqiya began on 27 February 2013.[14] The Mahmudabad palace near Barabanki was spruced up for the shoot.[15] Madhuri Dixit performed mujra to a song titled Apne Karar Mein.[16] Pandit Birju Maharaj choreographed the dance sequence for Madhuri Dixit for the film.[17] First look of the film was released on Oct 25, 2013 while trailer got released on 8th Nov, 2013.

Music of the film is composed by Vishal Bhardwaj while lyrics have been written by Gulzar. Singles "Hamari Atariya" sung by Rekha Bhradwaj & "Dil Ka Mizaaj Ishqiya" sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan were released.[citation needed]

Critical Reception

The movie garnered positive reviews from film critics. Anupama Chopra, the Hindustan Times movie critic said, "Dedh Ishqiya is worth watching just for Abhishek Chaubey's ambition. He is not constrained by the demands of the box office."[18] Giving it 5 out of 5 stars, Raja Sen (a movie critic from Rediff India) called Dedh Ishqiya a genuinely smart film.[19] Taran Adarsh from Bollywood Hungama also gave positive review, Ishqiya was sharp, spicy and volatile, with impulsive characters and a storyline taking a somersault every few minutes. Dedh Ishqiya is no different. It transports you to a diverse world, but like the first part, this one focuses on love and deceit as well. Also, it's far more complex this time around and the truth hits you like a ton of bricks![20]

The film works at numerous counts - editing, cinematography, sets, costumes. "Dedh Ishqiya is an absolute delight because all its parts fit beautifully. The cinematography, sets and costumes are exquisite. The editing is sharp. Most importantly Darab Farooqui's story is plotted wonderfully by Vishal Bharadwaj and Chaubey's screenplay. Bharadwaj has also written the dialogues and they're stylish, witty and a wonderful change from the awkward khichdi of Hindi and English that we usually hear in Bollywood films. Of course, it helps to have actors like Raaz and Shah delivering Bharadwaj's lines," writes Deepanjana Pal from Firstpost.[21]

Box office

Dedh Ishqiya opened with 20% occupancy at screens with a screen count of 1000–1200.[24] Later in the day the film failed to grow and faltered badly even in Uttar Pradesh where it was expected to perform better considering its genre.[25] Thus it collected ₹27.5−30 million (US$−360,000) on its opening day.[26] The film grossed around Rs 11.50 crore nett in first weekend.[27] Dedh Ishqiya collected around Rs 1.75 crore nett on first Monday taking its four day total to 13.25 crore nett.[28] The collections of Dedh Ishqiya were up around 25 lakhs nett going to 2 crore nett taking its five day total to Rs 15.25 crore nett. [29] Dedh Ishqiya fared poorly in Overseas collecting around $525,000 in first weekend.[30]
