Syedna Abdul Qadir Najmuddin [1] was born in the year 17th August 1814 (1st Ramazan ul Moazzam 1229H) and later became the 47th Da'i al-Mutlaq of the Dawoodi Bohra sect. He was the son of the 45th Da'i al-Mutlaq Syedna Tayyeb Zainuddin. After the demise of the 46th Da'i al-Mutlaq Syedna Mohammed Badruddin the reigns of the Dawoodi Bohra sect came into his hands. He led the community through period of grave turmoil within the Dawoodi Bohra sect due to a conspiracy hatched by the enemies of the Dawoodi Bohra sect stating doubts regarding conferrence of nas over Syedna Abdul Qadir Najmuddin [2].

Syedna Abdul Qadir Najmuddin was born to Syedna Tayyeb Zainuddin when Syedna Tayyeb Zainuddin and his younger brother Syedna Mohammed Ezzuddin were being trained by Syedna Abdeali Saifuddin to become Da'i al-Mutlaq. His childhood was nurtured by the care and guidance of his father. His father educated him and prepared him along with his brother Syedna Abdul Husain Husamuddin to acquire the knowledge taught by the 43rd Da'i al-Mutlaq Syedna Abdeali Saifuddin to Syedi Abdeali Imaduddin such that it reaches the 51st Da'i al-Mutlaq Syedna Taher Saifuddin.

When Syedna Tayyeb Zainuddin became the 45th Da'i al-Mutlaq Syedna Abdul Qadir Najmuddin was just 7 years old. As he grew up he accompanied his father at all times except when being taught by Syedi Abdeali Imaduddin. Syedna Tayyeb Zainuddin educated Syedna Abdul Qadir Najmuddin on the intracacies of becoming a Da'i al-Mutlaq. After the demise of Syedna Tayyeb Zainuddin, the 46th Da'i al-Mutlaq Syedna Mohammed Badruddin let him continue his studies with Syedi Abdeali Imaduddin and also guided him with the knowledge he had received from his father Syedna Abdeali Saifuddin.

Syedna Abdul Qadir Najmuddin was the first Da'i al-Mutlaq whose tenure was the longest amongst all the Da'i al-Mutlaq before him. For a period of more than 46 years he nutured the members of the Dawoodi Bohra sect with fatherly care and affection. His knowledge and persiverance led the members of Dawoodi Bohra sect out of a grave crisis that had shaken their very faith and created doubt in their beliefs.

Syedna Abdul Qadir Najmuddin remained as the Da'i al-Mutlaq till 1885. While he was planning ahead as to how to clear the heavy debts of the Dawoodi Bohra sect and travelling from one place to the other to educate the members of the community, he suddenly came under influence of an epidemic that was previlent in Ujjain. Syedna did nas upon Syedna Abdul Husain Husamuddin before important and high ranking post holders of the community. Syedna Abdul Qadir Najmuddin as per his nature of doing everything possible for the happiness of the members of Dawoodi Bohra sect; stayed back in Ujjain, to fulfill the wish of the members of the Dawoodi Bohra sect of Ujjain, who urged him to stay back in Ujjain till he recovers. And he, seeing their love and concern agreed to their wishes, giving up even his life for their happiness; for he knew very well that by being there, he will be staying there forever.

Early Life

Syedna Abdul Qadir Najmuddin was born in Surat, a city in the state of Gujarat, India where his father Syedna Tayyeb Zainuddin had shifted with his family so that he can devote more time in the service of the 43rd Da'i al-Mutlaq Syedna Abdeali Saifuddin. His father Syedna Tayyeb Zainuddin wanted to name him as 'Yusuf' but the 43rd Da'i al-Mutlaq Syedna Abdeali Saifuddin changed it to 'Abdul Qadir'. The significance of this was realized later when this child became the 47th Da'i al-Mutlaq.

Most of Syedna Tayyeb Zainuddin's time was devoted to the services of Syedna Abdeali Saifuddin. So the infancy of Syedna Abdul Qadir Najmuddin was mostly with the family of Da'i al-Mutlaq. He and Syedna Mohammed Budruddin, the son of Syedna Abdeali Saifuddin grew up together. They were together in almost everything, whether it be studies, or acquiring knowledge, or position in the community. The only two difference was that Syedna Mohammed Badruddin was 3 years older and he was the son of Syedna Abdeali Saifuddin.

Syedna Tayyeb Zainuddin became the 45th Da'i al-Mutlaq of the Dawoodi Bohra sect at the age of 38 years. Syedna Tayyeb Zainuddin was an efficient administrator and an eminent scholor. With his uncanny foresight he guided the Dawoodi Bohra sect to prosperity and growth. He was also well known amongst the government officials and authoritative people of other communities who came to seek his advice. All this made the enemies of the Dawoodi Bohra sect so jealous that they tried to assasinate Syedna Tayyeb Zainuddin more than once. But Syedna Tayyeb Zainuddin was saved and protected by the grace of Allah Taala.

Syedna Abdul Qadir Najmuddin always stood by his father learning from him the skills and knowledge to control and maintain the functioning of the various departments of the Dawoodi Bohra sect and also imbibe the spiritual virtues to become Da'i al-Mutlaq.

For 16 years Syedna Tayyeb Zainuddin educated Syedna Abdul Qadir Najmuddin in all aspects of knowledge. Acquiring such diverse and valuable skills made Syedna Abdul Qadir Najmuddin very determined and devoted to his work at hand and towards the major contribution that he has to make in the future.

Life before Da'i al-Mutlaq

Syedna Abdul Qadir Najmuddin's significant interactions with the members of the Dawoodi Bohra sect began at a very young age when he was being educated and groomed by his father Syedna Tayyeb Zainuddin.

Syedna Abdul Qadir Najmuddin was a fervent learner especially knowledge related to Muhammad Rasululla and his progeny.
