History
Products
Early on, Martin specialized in fog effect machines; They produced few lighting fixtures. In 1993, the company started producing the Mach series of live sound products, which were quickly discontinued. By 1997, the company realized its full potential as a leading manufacturer in the emerging market of DMX intelligent stage lighting products with the launch of the MAC 500 and 600.
In the early 1980s, Peter Johansen, a Danish entrepreneur and producer of discothèque equipment, produced a smoke generator after running experiments using dry ice in a coffee machine. He then established the company DP Electronics in Aarhus, Denmark, and by the mid-1980s the company was producing a line of fog machines that was sold in many countries around the world. At this same time, Johansen met the owner of a French manufacturer of hi-fi equipment who sold loudspeakers by the name “Martin USA” and shortly thereafter adopted the “Martin” name. The company began to produce a line of DJ lighting projectors that could emit beams of moving, colored light and changed its name to SM Electronics.

Martin's most prominent product to date is the MAC 2000 moving head fixture. It is used primarily by large theaters, concert producers and major television networks and production companies.
In 1987, Martin Professional was founded in Aarhus as a producer of DJ effect lights and fog machines.
Sparked by a fast-selling RoboScan line of moving mirror scanners, production moved in-house and a factory in the city of Frederikshavn, Denmark, was established. Martin began to introduce highly automated mass-production techniques, systems design, and full industrial planning and sales grew rapidly.

In addition to moving heads, Martin also manufactures flat mirror and rotating drum-style scanners, strobes, color changers, semi-intelligent effects, LED fixtures, controllers for Intelligent lighting, media servers and a line of smoke machines.
The fast sales growth of the early 90's required ever greater production capacity, which expanded regularly and the company’s subsidiary and distributor network grew. In 1994, revenue exceeded 100 million Danish kroner and in 1995 the company was listed on the Copenhagen Stock Exchange raising a net value of 85.5 million Danish kroner.

Most recent product additions include the Martin MAC III (a 1500w profile unit) and the Mac 301 (LED moving light wash).
Martin began to optimize products for the touring and rental market and by the mid-90’s the first MAC moving head appeared, the MAC 1200. The MAC 500 and MAC 600, two moving heads that became industry standard in the touring market, were launched in 1997. In 1998, the company launched its first architectural luminaire, the Exterior 600. Peter Johansen left the company in 1998. In 1999, Danish industrial firm Schouw & Co. purchased a 60 percent stake in the company.

In 2000, Martin launched the MAC 2000, its best-selling product to date. Revenue exceeded DKK 700 million ($80 million). By 2001, Schouw had fully acquired Martin and delisted it from the Copenhagen Stock Exchange. Martin expanded production in 2002 through a new 11,500 square meter factory in Frederikshavn and a year later the company began outsourcing production to China at a factory in Zhuhai.

In 2006, revenue surpassed DKK 1 billion ($183 million) and Martin moved into LED lighting and LED video display systems. In 2007, turnover hit a record DKK 1.2 billion ($234 million) and in 2008, Martin launched the third generation of MAC moving heads, the MAC III.

Martin enjoyed continued growth until 2008 but was hit hard by the financial crisis and reported a loss of more than 200 million Danish kroner in 2009 and had layoffs of 130 employees at their production sites in Frederikshavn.
