Wings of desire movie poster, the film is called "Heaven above Berlin" in German

Olim le Berlin (Template:Lang-he-n, progress towards Berlin) is a name of a Facebook website that coined a snowclone in 2014, and under the title milky protest caused some media interest in Israel and internationally. It means “Let’s ascend to Berlin” using the same rousing verb Jews reserve for aliyah, a basic tenet of Zionism. The conflict itself is called battle of the ecliptic (Template:Lang-he-n in Israel, a pun refering to the quite successfull first commercial for Milky pudding 1984 and the 2014 controversy.

Origin

Milky in different flavors

An Israeli living in Germany uploaded a grocery bill from Berlin's Wedding district. Berlin has, even in Germany, the land of Aldi and other discount stores, a "poor but sexy" image and is well known for a comparably low cost of living.[1] It contained a variety of different products and a photo of a commercial 'pudding' with whipped cream. In Israel, this sort of Milky pudding, based on a former Danone product from the Strauss company, is among the most popular desserts. The Facebook site challenged Israelis to buy exact same list, as just the pudding is around the equivalent of 1 shekel in Germany, while in Israel 4 or 5 shekels would be needed.[2][3] The German magazine Spiegel Online referred to Exodus in the English variant of the article about the issue.[4] [5]

The Facebook site got thousands of likes within hours and was mentioned in various press and media articles. Some even challenged the credibility or Jewish background of the author in question, as the bill included a non-kosher mix of (however separate packages of) meat and dairy products. But the Spiegel journal confirmed his background during an interview, without revealing his true name.[3] The protest started right before Sukkot, relevant because the holiday asks for pilgrimage to Jerusalem. As in the 2011 Israeli housing protests and cottage cheese boycott, Israeli prices and income differences are still a problem.[6]

Reactions

In a first reaction Israel HaYom, which is close to the Netanyahu government, chided Berlin’s ascenders on its front page as an insult to all Holocaust survivors.[7] Later HaYom interviewed economist Gilad Afer, who named high import taxes and protected Israeli agriculture as reasons for the price level.[8] The author told Channel 2 about having received several thousand requests from Israelis interested in leaving their country.[9] He asked the German government to formally allow 25,000 temporary work visas for up to three years, consistent with current immigration policy.[9] He also appealed to German economists to help formulate a plan to get the Israeli housing and food markets more efficient.[9] According Times of Israel French blogger Frederique Schillo [10] Israel Channel 10 sent its economic expert Matan Hodorov to Berlin, for a comparative testing of the "milkies". Schillo refers to the spread of further "Olim le..." pages providing information for destinations for Israelis going abroad. [10]

Emigration taboo

Berlin Reichstag building

Berlin has a quickly growing Jewish community.[11] The German Tagesschau confirmed the issue based on a statement of Manuel Trajtenberg and opinion polls which deem emigration less taboo than in the past.[12]

Israeli band Shmemel's song parodying "Jerusalem of Gold" with the notion, 'Jacob went down to Egypt, because the rent was a third and salaries double - Reichstag of Peace, Euro and Light' also grew famous in the context.[7] According to Haaretz, the conflict is less about pudding prices than about the now shattered taboo of yerida, emigrating from Israel.[13]

Berlin is among the cities that now attract 'the type who made Tel Aviv cool', young, single, non-religious and often female graduates,[7] and Berlin is now deemed a safe place for Jews, according German tabloid Bild, [14] having among others a left leaning online magazine in Hebrew, Spitzmag.[15][10]
