As a young man, Steven Lagos trained with many talented master jewelers while working with the finest materials, including 18k gold and precious gemstones. After perfecting his skills, Steven created his own fine jewelry company, LAGOS, at the age of 19. <ref>{{Cite news|url=https://www.forbes.com/sites/anthonydemarco/2017/09/24/steven-lagos-reflects-on-40-year-career-while-looking-ahead/#6fd1d2b54ef2|title=Steven Lagos Reflects On 40-Year Career While Looking Ahead|last=DeMarco|first=Anthony|work=Forbes|access-date=2018-01-09|language=en}}</ref>

In the early 1980’s, Neiman Marcus was creating a new category of bridge jewelry and asked Steven to be involved. As a goldsmith with silver experience, Steven was one of the first to introduce two-tone jewelry at a time when it wasn’t popular for women to wear silver and gold together. The collection was successful and LAGOS gained a cult-like following. <ref>{{Cite news|url=https://www.forbes.com/sites/anthonydemarco/2017/09/24/steven-lagos-reflects-on-40-year-career-while-looking-ahead/#6fd1d2b54ef2|title=Steven Lagos Reflects On 40-Year Career While Looking Ahead|last=DeMarco|first=Anthony|work=Forbes|access-date=2018-01-09|language=en}}</ref>
