In 1928 a group of United States biochemists and physiologists grouped together to form the first scientific society focused on nutrition, the American Institute for Nutrition. At the time the founders were all well known scientists engaged in writing textbooks and articles and doing research that would help to define nutrition as a newly emerging discipline. The Society held its first meeting at the [[Cornell Medical School]] in 1934. ASN serves as the authoritative voice informing Congress and the Administration of the need and value for continued support of nutrition research through [http://www.nutrition.org/public-affairs/federal-advocacy/ federal government advocacy]. On a global scale, ASN provides policymakers with information on relevant advances in nutrition science to guide policymaking and the development of legislation and regulations that are based in science. The ASN Public Policy Committee (PPC)’s mission is to develop well-informed nutrition policy decisions through objective consideration of the scientific evidence. The PPC’s function is to anticipate and respond to issues of national and international importance for ASN; to recommend to the Board of Directors potential collaborations with other organizations or coalitions as appropriate; to support testimony and the development of agreed-upon legislation as needed. The PPC identifies the legislative and/or regulatory issues most relevant to the membership and creates a focused agenda to reflect those needs each congressional cycle.

[http://nutrition.org/n18/ Nutrition], ASN’s inaugural flagship meeting gathers the top scientific researchers, practitioners, global and public health professionals, policy makers and advocacy leaders, industry, media and other related professionals gather to advance nutrition science and its practical application. Nutrition offers the latest and best nutrition research, the opportunity to present research, network with peers, and touch and see the latest products and technology in the exhibit hall. Nutrition is an immersive nutrition experience offering the greatest minds in nutrition science, superior research, interactive exhibits, new technology, and boundless opportunities for networking in a welcoming environment.

In 2014, ASN made the decision to separate from Experimental Biology in response to the rapidly growing interest in all aspects of nutrition. With input from more than 1,000 members, our Board of Directors approved the development of a new meeting that will better address the needs of our members and attendees, bring greater visibility to the field and to ASN as the authoritative global leader in nutrition through science; advance our mission, better engage current and prospective members; and generate revenue to fund strategic priorities.

The American Society for Nutrition (ASN) is an American society for professional researchers and practitioners in the field of nutrition. ASN publishes three journals in the field of nutrition. It has been criticized for its financial ties to the food and beverage industry.

History

In 1928 a group of United States biochemists and physiologists grouped together to form the first scientific society focused on nutrition, the American Institute for Nutrition. The Society held its first meeting at the Cornell Medical School in 1934. The society was renamed the American Society for Nutritional Sciences in 1996.[1]

In 2005, the American Society for Nutritional Sciences, the American Society for Clinical Nutrition (established 1961); and the Society for International Nutrition (established 1996) merged to form The American Society for Nutrition (ASN)

ASN currently (2015) has a membership of about 5,000. It is one of the constituent societies comprising the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, a non-profit organization that is the principal umbrella organization of U.S. societies in the field of biological and medical research.[1]

In October 2010, the American College of Nutrition and American Society for Nutrition proposed to merge.[2]

Publications

ASN publishes four academic journals. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition was first published in 1952, and had a 2016 impact factor of 6.926.[2]

In publication since 2010, Advances in Nutrition's 2016 impact factor of 5.233 places it seventh among all journals in the nutrition and dietetics category.

ASN has published The Journal of Nutrition, since 1928.[3] The Journal of Nutrition’s 2016 impact factor was 4.145, placing it in the top 10% of all journals indexed by Thomson Reuters.

In 2017, ASN launched a new open-access journal, Current Developments in Nutrition. Current Developments in Nutrition strives for quick peer review, accelerated dissemination, and adds many new areas of content to the portfolio offered by ASN journals.
