Follows Ronit Krushka (Rachel Weisz), an English photographer who returns to the ultra-conservative Jewish community from which she fled years earlier. Upon learning of the death of her father, the community's most highly-ranked rabbi, Ronit must revisit the people who shunned her in order to pay her respects to her family. She connects with her childhood friend, Dovid(Alessandro Nivola) her father's protege and the next in line to lead the congregation. But tension ignites when Ronit reunites with Esti (Rachel McAdams), Dovid's wife, with whom she had a relationship as a teenager. The forbidden affair and her peers' harsh reaction was the basis for Ronit's abandonment of the faith, Esti, and the community itself. Meanwhile, Esti, the more assertive of the duo, married Dovid and repressed her actual orientation.

Development

On September 29, 2016, it was reported that Rachel Weisz was set to produce[1] and star in an adaptation of the Naomi Alderman novel Disobedience; with Ed Guiney and Frida Torresblanco as co-producers, and Sebastián Lelio directing from a script by Lelio and Rebecca Lenkiewicz.[3] On October 4, 2016, Rachel McAdams joined the cast,[4] followed by Alessandro Nivola as McAdams' husband on December 7, 2016.[5] The film was co-financed by Film4 Productions and FilmNation Entertainment.[6] Matthew Herbert joined the production to compose the film score.[7]

Filming

Principal photography on the Irish-British-American production began on January 3, 2017.[6] Filming locations in London included Cricklewood[8] and Hendon.[9]

In May 2017, Curzon Artificial Eye acquired U.K. distribution rights from FilmNation Entertainment, and international distribution rights were acquired by Roadshow (Australia), Mars Films (France), Cinema SRL (Italy), Lev Films (Israel), Pathé (Switzerland), and Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions for various territories.[10] Bleecker Street acquired the U.S. distribution rights in September 2017,[11] and Mongrel Media acquired the rights for Canada.[12]

Disobedience had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, 2017.[13][14] The film premiered in the U.S. at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 24, 2018.[15][16]

Disobedience was released in a limited release in the United States on April 27, 2018.[17][18] It is scheduled to be released in the United Kingdom on November 30, 2018.[19][20]

Reception

Critical response

On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 86% based on 100 reviews, and an average rating of 7.5/10. The website's critical consensus reads, "Disobedience explores a variety of thought-provoking themes, bolstered by gripping work from leads Rachel Weisz, Rachel McAdams, and Alessandro Nivola."[21] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 74 out of 100, based on 36 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[22]

Andrew Barker of Variety gave the film a positive review, writing that Disobedience "may not catapult Lelio beyond the arthouse world, but it's yet another triumph in what's shaping up to be a major career."[23] David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter also gave the film a positive review writing, "Beautifully acted by Rachel Weisz, Rachel McAdams and Alessandro Nivola as the three points of a melancholy romantic triangle, this is a deeply felt drama that exerts a powerful grip."[24]

Matt Bobkin from Exclaim! praised the film saying, "The way that the lead trio imbue their characters with flawed humanity, assisted by Sebastián Leilo and Rebecca Lenkiewicz's script and Leilo's direction, result in a thought-provoking look at the tenuous boundaries between faith and sexuality. Disobedience opens up necessary conversations on the role of queerness in religion, proving as vital a watch for its societal impact as well as its performances."[25]

Box office

The film debuted in five theaters in New York City and Los Angeles and made $241,276 in its opening weekend (a per-venue average of $48k), ranking as the fourth-best opening average for the year to that point, after Isle Of Dogs ($60k), Avengers: Infinity War ($55k) and Black Panther ($50k).[26]
