Raatchasan (pronounced Raatchasan, English: Demon) is an Indian Tamil-language psychological thriller film directed by Ramkumar. The film features Vishnu and Amala Paul in the lead roles. Featuring music composed by Ghibran, the venture began production in November 2016.

Plot

Protagonist of the story Arun Kumar is an aspiring filmmaker. In his pursuit of the craft, he collects various tales of psychopaths and serial killers and he collects all their information and maintains them in his room. Constant rejections in his attempts and family constraints force him to abandon his dream and take up the job of a sub-inspector of police with the help of his brother-in-law who works in police. He also comes across heroine Amala Paul who happens to be a class teacher of his sister's daughter ammu. He helps ammu by forging her dad's signature in her report card for which both get caught. Amala Paul is shown to be living with a little girl who happens to have some speech problems. It is later revealed that it is her sister's daughter and her sister is no more. Meanwhile, in the Chennai city, a number of school girls are reportedly kidnapped and brutally murdered. Arun intuitively suggests to his superior officials that this could be the wrongdoings of a psycho killer, but they neglect his theories. Arun then suggests there would be more such killings and it turns out to be true, the police also discover a gift box with the head of a doll which is disfigured in all the missing school girls who have been murdered. Arun suggests that the injuries in all the school girls are identical to the disfiguring that is present in the dolls. The doctor doing the autopsy of the victim suggests that the murderer must a psychopath with anti-social disorder. Arun suggests that the serial killer can only be caught if they divert the serial killer by not disclosing to media and the parents about the last victim's identity. He says that the psycho killer enjoys the publicity and fear among people about his killings and if that is not there he might commit a mistake and get caught. The police also investigate using the doll head and find out that it is no longer in stock and just the last piece is left in a shop and it is an older imported model. The senior officials in the department agree with arun's theory and agree to hide the body of the last victim and not disclose to the parents or the media about the murder. They hide the body in a secret mortuary used by the police to hide encounters. Meanwhile we are also shown about a teacher in a private school who sexually molests the girl students on the pretext of them not doing well academically. Ammu is also shown to be transferred to this school. Another hearing impaired girl goes missing from this school and she is shown to board an auto before she went missing. Arun tries to find the auto with the help of viji( amala paul) , who is initially reluctant but then starts helping arun after arun saves her from some goons who try to misbehave with her in a late night auto ride. They find the auto driver who says that he dropped off the girl at the teacher's residence who sexually exploits them. Arun and police arrive at the school when the teacher tries to misbehave with ammu and catches him red handed. The teacher confesses that he misbehaved with the girls but he says he did not kill them. He says that the last girl who was murdered ran away from him (by getting know the bad intentions of the teacher before he could misbehave with her ) and was taken in a van. The teacher is murdered while at hospital in a shootout as he tries to escape from the police. Meanwhile ammu goes missing and they later find a gift box. Ammu is also murdered and body is disposed in arun's car. Arun later finds out the hearing impaired girl who was murdered last had a hearing aid which records sound. He retrieves her hearing aid and finds a strange piano tune before she is murdered. He plays that tune over a radio talk show and asks for clue from the radio viewers and finally one girl calls up and says she has heard the tune in a magic show conducted in her school. Arun then finds out that a magic show was conducted in all the schools before the girls went missing and asks the school about the magic show which is revealed to be conducted by a middle aged lady who is speech impaired. She also befriends her victims by doing magic and uses that to kidnap her victims. Arun finds the video of the lady in one of the schools magic show in which she invites the next victim to the stage and performs magic tricks along with them. Arun also tries to find where her next magic show will happen and finds out who the next victim is. He pursues the killer by alerting the next victim(Sanjana) and saves Sanjana before she is able to kill her off. In the process he finds the killers home and pictures but is unable to catch her. He matches the picture with the database of psycho killers he has in his room(which he collects for his movie). He finds the police officer(Radha Ravi) who worked on the case and finds out that her name is Mary Fernandez and she lived in Ooty with her husband who is a magician and son Christopher. Christopher has a condition (Werner syndrome) which causes him to age quickly as a result of which he looks like an old man in his school. His father dies and Christopher is bullied by his classmates but finds one girl who is kind to him. He mistakes this to be love upon which that girl also tells Christopher about his condition and he is unfit for a family, other kids overhear this and make fun of Christopher a lot, upon this he is mentally affected and his mother helps Christopher to kill the girl. The police then arrest both of them and it is learned by the police that both of them are dead at a later point. The police officer looks at the pictures in magic show and finds a major clue and tries to call Arun , before Arun arrives the police officer is killed by Mary. Police arrest Arun on suspicion. It is later revealed that the person doing magic has six fingers on one hand and it is Christopher who has six fingers and he is assuming the identity of Mary and doing the killings. Christopher also kidnaps viji's daughter while Arun is held by police. Viji's daughter is helped by another police who is Arun's friend to escape from Christopher , but he is also murdered by Christopher. She escapes to the secret mortuary where the doctor in the mortuary helps her. Christopher goes to the mortuary and tries to kill the doctor and the girl. Meanwhile Arun escapes from police and arrives there. In the final fight Arun finally overpowers Christopher and his magic and kills him and saves the girl. In a later scene it is shown that the serial psycho killer is murdered and caught by some higher officials in the department while Arun recovers from his injuries in the hospital.

Production

Following the release of the comedy drama Mundasupatti (2014), Ramkumar was keen to do a serious film to avoid being type-cast. He was inspired to write a film on a psycho killer after reading an international news story about Alexander Spesivtsev, and spent close to a year writing a fictional screenplay to fit around the character of a psycho killer. Ramkumar initially struggled to find an actor to play the lead role of a forty-year-old man with a child, and despite working the child out of the script as a result, he still found it difficult to convince actors to sign the film. In April 2017, actor Jai signed the project titled Ratchasan, which was set to be produced by C. V. Kumar of Thirukumaran Entertainment. However soon after the actor and director dropped out of the project, and Kumar took the title of Ratchasan with him. Subsequently, throughout the production stage, the film was briefly known as Cinderella and then Minmini, but neither title was kept. The former title was claimed by another Tamil film's producers, while Ramkumar felt the latter seemed too light-hearted. Eventually, the team members managed to amicably convince Kumar to offer them the title of Ratchasan, which was later stylised to Ratsasan.

Ramkumar chose to make the film with producer Dilli Babu and starring Vishnu in the lead role in July 2017. Amala Paul joined the cast of the film in late November 2017, with production starting thereafter. In June 2017, the title of the film was changed to Raatchasan.

Release

Ratsasan was released in India on 4th October 2018 and the film received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics and audience alike.
