The Egg Throwing Incident (2019) occurred on 16 March 2019 in Moorabbin, Victoria, Australia.[1]

An egg was splattered on the head of Australian Senator Fraser Anning less than a day after his islamphobic response to the Christchurch mosque shootings.[1]

The egg was thrown by 17 year old William Connolly, later dubbed "Eggboy" on social media, whilst he was simultaneously filming the action on a mobile phone. Background

On 15 March 2019, Immediately after the events of the Christchurch mosque shootings, far right independent Australian Senator Fraser Anning released an official statement that was widely condemned both within and outside Australia for being Islamophobic and insensitive to the victims of the terrorist attack. Within a day of his statements a petition calling for his expulsion from the Australian parliament had amassed 250,000 signatures.[2]

On 16 March 2019 during a Fraser Anning address to the media in a press conference in Moorabbin, Melbourne Anning was suggesting the cause of the attack on New Zealand Muslims was islamic violence. During this address William Connolly interrupted by splattering an egg on Fraser Anning's head whilst simultaneously filming with his phone.

Response to incident

William Connolly immediately after the incident advised for others to not copy his actions stating "Don’t egg a politician, you’ll get tackled by 30 bogans at the same time, I learnt the hard way”.[3]

Satirical publication The Chaser declared that "No further nominations to be accepted for Australian of the Year 2020".[4]

Musical groups including Violent Soho[5], Hilltop Hoods[6], The Mountain Goats[7] and others went to social media to offer William Connolly free entry to their concerts for life. Additionally Birds of Tokyo decreed "All hail egg boy!".[8]

International coverage of incident

Qatari television broadcaster Al Jazeera reported on the incident.[9] In the United States New York Broadsheet newspaper The New York Times covered the incident along with the The Washington Post.[10] British Television Network ITV covered the incident.[11]

Eleanor Robertson, writer for Frankie, The Saturday Paper and Meanjin highlighted on Twitter that the shirt William Connolly was wearing bore the Roman numerals MCMXVII, corresponding to 1917, the year in which Australian Prime Minister Billy Hughes was egged in the famous Egg Throwing Incident, ultimately leading to the establishment of the Australian Federal Police.[12]
