Mian Abdul Haq , popularly known as "Mian Mitthu" and "Mitthu Mian", is a Pakistani politician, muslim cleric and custodian of Bharchundi Shia Dargah, who was member of the National Assembly of Pakistan from 2008 to 2013. He is a controversial figure who is well known for subverting the legal process in numerous cases of kidnapping of underage hindu girls (at least 117 victims), their forced conversion to islam and marriage to older men at this dargah, as well as inciting violence against hindus specially by misusing Pakistan's notorious blasphemy laws against nonmuslims.[1][2][3]

Relgious life and persecution of minorities

He has been named in several cases of religious discrimination, forced conversion and forced marriage of underage hindu girls.[1][2] Mian Mithu, a favorite and close associate of Imran Khan and Pakistan Army as well as the Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa, has abducted 117 Hindu girls, forcefully converted them and subsequently sold and married off to Muslim men.[3] His victims include Raveena (13 years old), Reena (15 years old), and many more in Ghotki area where his shrine is.[4] Violence is committed against the hindu community of Ghotki and the fake blasphemy allegations are slapped on those activists who try to protect the kidnapped, converted and raped hindu girls.[4] Allegations of blasphemy, which require very little evidence are a regularly misused by islamic radicals to silent the minorities because an allegation of blasphemy effectively means a death sentence in Pakistan.[3] A muslim student made false accusation of blasphemy against his school principal, "Notan Das" a Hindu, because Notan has protected one of the hindu victim of kidnap and conversion by Mian Mithu.[3] Based on this false allegation Mian Mithu instigated violence against the hindu community in Ghotki, shops of hindus were burnt and their property destroyed, all of this was captured on video which soon went viral.[3]

Political career

He was elected to the National Assembly of Pakistan from Constituency NA-200 (Ghotki-I) as a candidate of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) in 2008 Pakistani general election.[5][6][7][8] He received 59,022 votes and defeated Khalid Ahmed Khan Lund, a candidate of Pakistan Muslim League (Q) (PML-Q).[9]

He ran for the seat of the National Assembly from Constituency NA-200 (Ghotki-I) as an independent candidate in 2013 Pakistani general election but was unsuccessful. He received 69 votes and lost the seat to Ali Gohar Khan Mahar. In the same election, he ran for the seat of the Provincial Assembly of Sindh as an independent candidate from Constituency PS-5 (Ghotki-I) but was unsuccessful. He received 19 votes and lost the seat to Jam Mehtab Hussain Dahar.[10]
