etf.com is an American financial news and media company that covers exchange-traded funds (ETFs).[1][2][3] Since February 2021 the company is owned by ETFS Capital.[4]
The company is headquartered in New York City. The current CEO is Michael Morelli.
History
[edit]etf.com was founded in 2001 as IndexUniverse.com by Jim Wiandt as a subsidiary of his company IndexUniverse, LLC.[2] Prior to founding IndexUniverse.com, Wiandt was the publisher of IndexFunds.com and authored the book Exchange Traded Funds (2001).[3] The company was founded in collaboration with Steven Schoenfeld who provided the IndexUniverse.com URL.[2]
In 2001, Wiandt acquired the Journal of Indexes from Dow Jones & Company. In 2003, he acquired the print newspaper Exchange Traded Report. These publications merged into IndexUniverse.com. The company initially focused on index investing before shifting to solely providing data and content on ETFs.[2] [3]
Wiandt also started the industry events business Inside ETFs. In 2014, the Inside ETFs conference had 1,600 attendees.[2][5]
In 2010, the company developed a database of all ETFs registered in the United States. The database was available online for free.[2]
In 2014, IndexUniverse.com changed its name to ETF.com.[2]
In 2015, Wiandt stepped down as CEO of ETF.com. Its data business was sold to financial data company FactSet.[6] Inside ETFs was sold to the British financial publishing and events company Informa, which continues to hold the conference annually.[7]
In 2016, etf.com's publication business was sold to Cboe Global Markets.[4] In 2021, the United Kingdom-based venture capital firm ETFS Capital acquired ETF.com.[4] ETFS Capital was founded by Australian businessman Graham Tuckwell.[8] Michael Morelli was named CEO in January 2022.[9]
In April 2023, the company was rebranded as etf.com and re-launched their website.[1]
