Contra 4 is a 2D side-scrolling action game for the Nintendo DS. Chronologically, the game will take place two years after Contra III: The Alien Wars ("Contra Spirits" in Japan) and three years before Contra: Hard Corps ("Contra: 'The' Hard Corps" in Japan), featuring the villain from the Game Boy title Operation C (known simply as "Contra" in Japan), the Black Viper. The game takes place on Galuga Island, the setting of the original Contra.

The game has taken elements from the Japanese and North American storylines as main characters Bill Rizer and Lance Bean will be joined by "Mad Dog" and "Scorpion" in the fight against Black Viper. Mad Dog and Scorpion were the localized names used for Bill and Lance in the American version of Contra for the NES (the original arcade version retained their original names for the U.S. release), while Black Viper was a sister organization of Red Falcon's in the localized storyline of Operation C (in the Japanese version, it was an unnamed foreign country).[1].

The game was released in North America on November 13 2007[1]. The release of the game in Japan and Europe is still unconfirmed.

Gameplay details

The game uses both screens of the Nintendo DS. A new grappling hook allows the player to move to the top screen. Besides the grappling hook, the controls are nearly exactly those of Contra III, with the dual weapon system from that game returning. Grabbing two weapon powerups of the same type will upgrade the characters firepower even further. Powerups can be discarded so that another player can pick them up. It should be noted that besides using the two screens, Contra 4 makes no other usage of the DS' features such as touch screen, microphone, Online play or single cart multiplayer.

Konami representatives confirmed six 2D levels and three 3D "base" stages at E3 2007 [2]. The stages pay frequent homage to Contra, Super Contra ("Super C" on the American NES), and Contra III. Three difficulty modes are available: easy, normal, and hard. Easy will be accessible to novices (but will not provide the full ending), whereas normal will be "at least as difficult as the original Contra", and hard will be a huge challenge for hardcore players. Konami confirmed 2-player ad-hoc play during E3. While there is no difference between the four initial playable characters, other gameplay modes will be added for replayability.

Music

The music and sound design is handled by Jake Kaufman, who also composed for Shantae, another Wayforward Technologies game. The soundtrack consists of arrangements of music from previous Contra games as well as new original tracks. [2]

Bonus Features

Konami has announced that Contra 4 will contain several extras. These include:

  • Original NES versions of Contra and Super C
  • A 20th Anniversary Virtual Museum (box art, screenshots, and info on every Contra title from all territories)
  • Two digital comics from Contra artist Atsushi Tsujimoto
  • An interview with Contra Producer Nobuya Nakazato
  • Five hidden characters, including a Probotector model (Probotector is the name used in Europe for all console titles before Legacy of War)[3]
