The Graphics Lab is a project to improve the graphical content of the Wikimedia projects. Requests for image improvements can be added to the workshop pages: Illustrations, Photographs and Maps. For questions or suggestions one can use the talk pages: Talk:Graphics Lab, Talk:Illustrations, Talk:Photographs and Talk:Maps.
This specific page is the requests page for the photography workshop. Anyone can make a request for a photograph to be improved for a Wikipedia article. The standard format for making a request is shown below, along with general advice, and should be followed.

New York State Route 57
-
Old reference marker on former NY 57
-
Closeup of said marker
Article(s): New York State Route 57
Request: When the first pic is rendered at thumbnail size, the text in the marker is only faintly visible because the green and white are (I guess) dulled by the shadows. I also took a closeup pic of the marker; however, in this case the marker is too bright, making it near-illegible again. Is it possible to modify the pics so that the markers look a bit more natural (like here) and are more legible? – TMF 17:08, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s):
Done: The second (closeup) file enhanced. PawełMM (talk) 13:54, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
- Is there any chance of the first being improved? Of the two images above, the first has a better chance of being used in the article if improved. – TMF 09:21, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
Done: I tried to improve the first. Do you like it? PawełMM (talk) 08:00, 18 August 2010 (UTC)
- It's certainly better than it was before. I'm not the biggest fan of it, though, because now it looks like the marker has a spotlight shining on it. Would it be possible to lighten up the entire foreground? If not, I went out to Clay last week and took a picture of another marker that we could work with (in another request, of course). That photo's lighting situation is much more straightforward than this one's is. – TMF 01:12, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

Request: Remove opaque background. Ⓢock 17:10, 7 August 2010 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s): This doesn't look much like a photograph. It is better if you asked for a vectorized version in the Illustration lab. Finemann (talk) 07:54, 8 August 2010 (UTC)
- It is; Apple's simplicity comes into play. It could be vectorized, though... ℳono 05:31, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
Done: Created SVG version. The most obvious difference is the lightness of the line separating the two regions; I would need to add another line over the top to fix that. gringer (talk) 13:19, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

Request: please create new variant (don't change this one, its perspective is important), crop to face, fix perspective, transparent background, name File:Shisa face.jpg or File:Shisa face.png... Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 06:21, 8 August 2010 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s):
Done as requested. I vectorized the image and it is available at File:Shisa_face.svg. Hope the colors are okay. Finemann (talk) 07:51, 8 August 2010 (UTC)
- Great, thank you! Can you trim off the advert text and the extra blank space?--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 09:10, 8 August 2010 (UTC)

- Thank you! Yeah, it's just the shop's name. You do great work!--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 10:24, 8 August 2010 (UTC)
- How did you make it? Manual trace must've taken hours.... --Shandristhe azylean 14:44, 8 August 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah! It's beautiful, really outstanding!--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 02:37, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
- It was pretty easy actually, most vector graphics programs have a trace bitmap feature (I used Inkscape). It takes less than 5 min to do the whole thing! Finemann (talk) 07:59, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
- That photo of a sign is MOST LIKELY a copyright violation being a derivative work of a 2d artwork that is likely copyrighted. Therefore the SVG is a derivative work of a copyrighted work. I've marked both of these for deletion on Commons. — raekyT 05:45, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
- "Most likely" does not give you free rein to remove tags others have legitimately placed there.--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 06:37, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
- It's an uncontroversial deletion on Commons as a commons:COM:DW, but since you want to fight it you can have a DR I suppose.. — raekyT 07:03, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

- If it was uncontroversial, there wouldn't be an alternate tag and a suggestion "Appeal: If you think that the file does not meet the criteria for speedy deletion, replace this tag with {{delete}}."--Chris (クリス • フィッチ) (talk) 09:10, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

Request: If you can do anything for them (particularly the one to the right).. The only thing I could think to do for the right one is blur out the whole background, which I would rather not do because it's supposed to be camouflaging. I'ḏ♥One 01:45, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

Request: Can anyone do anything about the brightness on the top left corner? I've tried, but I can't really do anything, so that's why I'm here. Thanks in advance! Connormah 00:50, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s):
- Assuming you're talking about the bright patch on her hair, level/curve adjustment doesn't seem to help because the highlights are overexposed. Fixes will probably need repainting of that area. It's annoying that the entire section of hair with that angle is too bright, which means a straight clone can't be used. gringer (talk) 02:25, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
- I had a go anyway. I duplicated the layer, clipped out an area of good hair, rotated that area to fit over the highlight, adjusted colours to fit with surrounding area, and erased the edge to make the fit a bit cleaner. It's still an obvious modification, and I wouldn't consider it much of an improvement (if any). Feel free to upload improvements over the top of that one. gringer (talk) 02:51, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
- I was playing with this at the same time - so here's my effort. I took a different approach and selected the highlight areas with a threshold mask, feathered the area, then painted them with a darker hair colour to create an adjustment layer. It's at about 50% opacity here, and I have the source file, so I can increase or decrease that if you think it's any good. Increasing it too much starts to get noticeable, though. Request: Hi! Well, I'd like to know if its is possible to take the images of Pedro Álvares Cabral and the other one of José Bonifácio de Andrada and remove the background as in this picture (Here: [1]). The last one, which despicts the Battle of Avaí, I'd like to see the text in the upper-right corner removed. And perhaps, if possible, to make the "line" in the middle of the picture (it is in fact two images collaged together). As it was one picture only. Thank you all for your help.
