Zorpia is a privately held commercial social networking service (SNS). It was founded by Jeffrey Ng in December 2003 and is operated by Zorpia Co. Ltd. The company is based in Hong Kong and has subsidiaries in the United States and mainland China. As of September 2012, Zorpia has over 25 million registered users.[1] It is one of the very few ICP-licensed international social networking services operators in mainland China; there it operates the site Zorpia.cn.[3]

The name Zorpia is intended to sound like an imaginary country; it is claimed that its users will refer to themselves as "Zorpians"![4] Zorpia's primary features are photo album, online journal, social networking, customized homepage, comment system, and discussion forum. Everyone who declares themselves to be at least 16 years old may become a registered user of the site.[5]

TopTenReviews ranks Zorpia as the fifth-best social networking service in terms of functionality behind Facebook, Myspace, Friendster, and Bebo.[6] Alexa Internet ranks Zorpia among the 6,000 most frequently visited websites worldwide,[2] 40 percent of its users come from India.[3] In India, its Alexa rank is around 700.[2] Zorpia named itself fastest growing social network in India in 2010.[7] The company has 30 employees.[8] It is a member of the Asia Digital Marketing Association (ADMA).[9]

History

Jeffrey Ng speaking at the Hong Kong International Computer Conference 2008

Jeffrey Ng, the founder and CEO of Zorpia, was born in 1982 in Hong Kong. He graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, majoring in computer engineering. In December 2003, he founded Zorpia in his apartment. He was interested in meeting people from around the world and gave the site the name Zorpia because he wanted it to be an online nation for people to make new friends.[10]

Zorpia was launched after Friendster (March 2002) and Myspace (August 2003) and before Facebook (February 2004). The one millionth user registered on 25 August 2005, the ten millionth on 31 January 2008. Between June 2009 and December 2010, Zorpia experienced 154 percent growth, from 5.1 million unique visitors per months to 13 million per month.[11]

Past and current partnerships have included Viximo, Meebo, RockYou, and AdSense. In 2011 Zorpia launched its first Facebook App, Get Dating, focusing on helping Facebook users to find dates, followed by the app Get Friending to find friends.

Technology

Zorpia provides tools to discover people based on different parameters (e.g., common interests, location, and popularity). It helps to connect with new people for romantic, platonic, or professional reasons. They can share information with others while maintaining privacy and discuss topics within groups. The company has been developing anti-spamming techniques, fake identities prevention systems, and user attractiveness detection algorithms, as well as technology to analyze and predict compatibility between strangers; and recommend personal content.

Spam policy

Zorpia's official Terms of Service prohibit spamming, defined as any repetitive entries (sensible or insensible) posted multiple times so as to annoy readers.[5]

Nevertheless Zorpia has been infamous in violating its own Terms of Service by sending repetitive "private messages" to people who are not users, "inviting" them to read those messages by joining Zorpia.[12][13][14]
