On March 22, 2021, a mass shooting occurred at a King Soopers supermarket in Boulder, Colorado.[3][4][5][6] Ten people were killed, including Boulder Police Officer Eric Talley.[1] In addition, the person of interest was injured and transported to a nearby hospital.[2]

Events

The shooting began shortly after 2:30 p.m. Mountain Time when the gunman silently entered the supermarket and began to shoot.[7] A family in line awaiting their COVID-19 vaccines at the store's pharmacy witnessed the gunman shoot a woman at the front of the line and proceeded to hide in a coat closet until their rescue.[8] Some customers and King Soopers employees reached safety via a back exit in the supermarket.[4][9] The incident was partially livestreamed by a witness.[1] According to a senior law enforcement source, an AR-15 assault rifle was the firearm used by the gunman to commit the shooting.[3]

Around the same time as the shooting began, the Boulder Police Department began receiving calls of "a possible person with a patrol rifle". One of the first officers on the scene was Officer Eric Talley, who was shot and killed by the perpetrator.[10]

Witnesses at the scene reported hearing anywhere from ten to thirty shots fired in rapid succession.[4][9]

Around the time of the shooting, reports emerged of another armed individual in the city. Boulder Police later confirmed that this incident was unrelated.[11] A shelter-in-place order was issued in the area at 4:18 p.m. and lifted at 6:40 p.m.[12]

Response

Up to 15 different agencies responded to the incident, including the Jefferson County SWAT, the FBI, the ATF, and local police departments.[13]

Victims

Law enforcement officials stated that at least ten people were killed in the shooting,[14] including police officer Eric Talley, who had worked for the Boulder Police department for 11 years.[15]

Suspect

A person of interest was taken into custody.[16] They were injured and subsequently received medical care.[17]
