== History ==
In early years, the area of ''El Rio'' was once a sparsely populated forested area inhabited by a small group of [[Lumad]]s who were members of the original [[Manobo|Manobo Tribes]] of Upper [[Agusan Valley]].

In 1946, after the [[World War II]] Liberation Period, ''El Rio'' was declared as one of the de facto barangays of the Municipal District of Nuevo Sibagat under the jurisdiction of the then Municipality of [[Butuan]] of [[Agusan (province)|Agusan Province]], now [[Butuan City]].

== Geography ==
El Rio is situated at approximately 8.8608, 125.68, in the island of [[Mindanao]]. El Rio shares a common borders with the following barangay(s): Barangay [[Santa Maria, Sibagat|Santa Maria]], [[Sibagat|Sibagat, Agusan del Sur]] to the north; Barangay [[Del Rosario, Sibagat|Del Rosario]], [[Sibagat, Agusan del Sur]] to the east; Barangay [[Mahayahay, Sibagat|Mahayahay]], [[Sibagat, Agusan del Sur]] to the south and southeast; Barangay [[Anahawan, Sibagat|Anahawan]], [[Sibagat, Agusan del Sur]] to the southwest; and Barangay [[Afga, Sibagat|Afga]], [[Sibagat|Sibagat, Agusan del Sur]] to the west and northwest.

== Demographics ==
El Rio has a land area of 765 hectares based on cadastral survey or equivalent to 1.35% of the Total Municipal Land Area.{{PH census|2015}}<ref name=":0" />

Its population as determined by the 2015 [[Census]] was 1,463. According to the 2015 [[Census]]{{PH census|2015}}, the age group with the highest [[population]] in El Rio is 5 to 9, with 212 individuals. Conversely, the age group with the lowest population is 80 and over, with 11 individuals.

The population of El Rio grow from 1,171 in 1990 to 1,463 in 2015, an increase of 292 people. == Economy ==
The economy of El Rio is dependent heavily on [[subsistence agriculture]]. Its major [[Agricultural production|agricultural products]] are [[coconut]], [[banana]], [[Maize|corn]], [[coffee]], [[fruit]]s, [[vegetable]]s, and [[root crops]].

== Transportation ==
[[Motorized tricycle|Motorized Tricycles]] and [[Motorized tricycle (Philippines)|Motorized]] [[Pedicabs]] are the most common means of transportation within Barangay El Rio and to some adjacent barangays with good and accessible roads.

[[Motorcycle taxi]], locally known as ''[[Habal-habal]]'', a single motorcycle modified with outriggers to seat more than two persons that caters passengers from ''El Rio'' to adjacent barangays and remote villages with rough and steep terrain and vice versa.
