Josh is a video-sharing social networking service, owned by VerSe Innovation - an Indian technology company based in Bangalore, India.[1] Josh is a made-in-India, short video app that was incidentally launched in the period immediately after the Indian Government banned TikTok and several other Chinese apps in June 2020.[2] The founders of the platform have promoted the app as the “Instagram for Bharat” referring to their focus on the Indian audience that speaks its own regional and state languages.[3] As of April 2022, Josh has 150 million monthly active users.[1]

History

Launched in September 2020, under the aegis of the Atmanirbhar Bharat campaign, Josh is the brainchild of two of India’s leading entrepreneurial minds- Virendra Gupta (Founder, VerSe Innovation) and Umang Bedi (Co-founder, VerSe Innovation). Josh is VerSe’s commitment towards serving Bharat’s local language users, while expanding its family of apps focused on Bharat.

In just 45 days of its beta launch, this short video app had onboarded more than 200 top exclusive creators, four mega music labels (T-Series, Sony, Zee Music and Divo Music), over five million user-generated content (UGC) creators, recording more than a billion video plays per day, and over 21 minutes time spent per Daily Active User (DAU).

Technology and Content

Josh has a super app in the back-end where there’s common artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) reinforcement learning based local language tech stack, common user identity platform, common ad-tech stack and a common go-to-market (GTM) team.[4] The app offers several challenges and allows users to create duets that can range from crooning to their favourite tunes or testing their acting skills with funny or romantic dialogues. Users can also share a video they like directly via WhatsApp.[5]

Today, Josh hosts 200+ exclusive and leading content creators, including India’s top favourites like Sameeksha Sud, Faisal Shaikh (Mr. Faisu), Ruhi Singh[6], Afsha Shah, Jubin Shah, and Vishal Parekh[7] among many others.

In February 2021, VerSe Innovation raised $100 million funding from Qatar Investment Authority, the sovereign wealth fund of the State of Qatar, and Glade Brook Capital Partners. The company plans to deploy the funding steadily in the continued scaling up of 'Josh'.

In December 2020, Josh’s parent company VerSe Innovation secured a funding of over $100 million from Falcon Edge Capital’s AlphaWave, Google, and Microsoft, turning it into a unicorn. Most of the investment from the latest round will be routed to the Josh app.[8]

Campaigns

In March 2021, Josh launched its first original IP ‘World Famous’- a mega talent hunt to recognize and celebrate India’s diverse, young talent.[9]

Partnerships

In February 2021, Saregama and Josh signed a music licensing deal, wherein Josh expanded its musical library with 1.3 lakh songs from Saregama in 25 different languages.[10]

Appointments

In March 2021, Josh set up Josh Studios and appointed Seher Bedi as the head of Josh Studios.[11]
