Doubts over early deputy leaders

I haven't been able to verify that McGregor was ever deputy leader, only that he was Senate leader. Some sources specifically say that there was no deputy leader, e.g. a biography of Andrew Fisher states that he was in fact elected deputy c. 1906 after Watson threatened to resign over the workload (implying that there was previously no deputy). Similar doubts over Gardiner, e.g. some sources list Ryan and Charlton as deputies in the early 1920s – but possibly only deputy leader in the House. I'll investigate further. According to biographies on Watson, Hughes and Fisher all state the first deputy leader was Andrew Fisher who was defeated Hughes by a single vote. None I have read provide an exact date rather it occurred during the Watson government. So we know the position was established some time between 27 April 1904 and 18 August 1904, with no office of deputy existing before then.

Given no one has responded to you prior to myself I don't expect anyone to respond to my reply either, the only action that can realistically be taken is to replace McGregor with Fisher with a start date no more specific then 1904, at the very least this would remove inaccuracies and make the list consistent with several page articles.14.2.101.84 (talk) 10:38, 16 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
