Silver the Hedgehog (シルバー・ザ・ヘッジホッグ, Shirubā za Hejjihoggu) is a video game character in the Sonic the Hedgehog video game series. He is a white anthropomorphic hedgehog who hails from the future. He is 14 years old, 100 cm (3'3") tall, and weighs 35 kg (77 lbs). He made his debut for the series in Sonic The Hedgehog.

Game Appearances

Sonic the Hedgehog

Silver's introductory appearance is in Sonic the Hedgehog for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. His individual episode revolves around him traveling back in time to find the "Iblis Trigger", who was the cause of his world being destroyed in the future. Silver is partnered with Blaze the Cat (whose appearance conflicts with the story of Sonic Rush). Over the course of the game, Silver learns the truth about the "Iblis Trigger", and how his world can be saved.

Silver's stages stray away from traditional Sonic elements as his stages center on the usage of his telekinetic abilities. As he lacks many of the standard character attacks, Silver must use his psychic abilities to defeat enemies and solve puzzles. Silver is capable of altering surrounding environments at will, enabling access to various paths in the levels that other characters cannot.

Sonic Rivals

Silver is another one of Sonic's rivals, as he is a main character in Sonic Rivals for the PlayStation Portable. His story involves him responding to a distress signal, though he doesn't know who is sending it. Over the course of the game, he finds out that Eggman Nega is linked to this distress signal. Silver states that he will bring Eggman Nega back to the future where he belongs.

Silver's abilities are similar to that of the other characters (Sonic, Shadow, Knuckles, and Metal Sonic) as the game is based on competition. He is able to confuse opponents by altering their controls. He is also given several alternate costumes. As the events of Sonic the Hedgehog never happened, Silver and Sonic are introduced to each other in the storyline for the first time.

Notable, too, is the fact that Silver the Hedgehog calls him a "silver hedgehog" in this game, despite him being white in appearance.

Sonic and the Secret Rings

Silver appears in the multi-player mode of Sonic and the Secret Rings as a secret character, though has no role in the main story whatsoever. [citation needed]

Personality

Silver has "a strong sense of justice" and it is this personality trait that motivates him to head back into the past to correct the future. Also, he believes in standing up for those who can't stand up for themselves. This led him to accept Blaze when everybody else was teasing her because of her pyrokinetic abilities. Although seemingly serious in nature, an interview states that Silver is young and immature. [1] he is emotionally dependent upon Blaze, and gets insecure when she is not around. Blaze claims that Silver is naive several times, and, before sacrificing herself, she says that this is something she always liked about him.

Abilities

When Silver was first introduced to the Sonic world, he was shown to be slow in speed, much behind Sonic and Shadow. However, according to Sonic Rivals, Silver appears to be much faster, and he is able to access the homing attack and the spin dash. He still has his psychokinesis powers as well. He uses these as his special attack in Sonic Rivals. This is likely because to get around in his destroyed world (as shown in the beginning of his story in sonic the hedgehog) he levitated and didn't run due to most of the ground being constantly alight.

Silver can use his psychokinesis in a number of ways. He can move objects with his mind, and either use them as projectiles, or arrange them in order to cross gaps. He is also capable of bending various metal objects such as beams and prison bars. Another move would allow him to stand on a various object, and levitate it in the air, allowing Silver to gain more altitude. Other offensive skills include the ability to paralyze enemies with his powers, and being able to halt and return enemy fire.

Silver can also manipulate himself by levitating in the air and dashing at high speeds. In Sonic Rivals, he is capable of using his ESP to confuse his enemies. Much like Sonic and Shadow, Silver has the ability of Chaos Control, and is able to transform into a Super Form.

Major interaction with other characters

Blaze the Cat is from the same time and world as Silver. Although Blaze is shy around strangers and strict with herself, she works well with Silver as a partner. They also constantly work together to fight Iblis in the future. Before she vanishes from their world at the end of Silver's story in Sonic the Hedgehog, Blaze reveals that she always liked how naive Silver was. Due to the retcon at the end of the game, the current status of their relationship is unknown.

In Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog is said to be the legendary "Iblis Trigger" that set "Iblis" free years before Silver's time. As the events of that game are erased from the time line, their first meeting is in Sonic Rivals. Sonic first notices Silver's "attitude" when they first meet, and they don't exactly see eye-to-eye at first. In the end, the two help each other out during the last stage of the game.

In Sonic the Hedgehog, Silver's frustration at Iblis's constant resurrections is used against him by Mephiles the Dark to ensure Iblis is released in the past. Mephiles informs Silver that in the past Sonic served as the "Iblis Trigger", and uses his powers to send Silver and Blaze back in time in order to assassinate Sonic before this can occur. In reality, Sonic's death would serve as the catalyst. Silver initially believes Mephiles's lies, but his encounters with Sonic and the others begin to make his question Mephiles' intentions.

Silver is also a rival of Shadow the Hedgehog in Sonic Rivals, and they both also appear in Sonic the Hedgehog. In Sonic the Hedgehog, when Silver first meets Shadow, he mistakes him for Mephiles (and ends up quite confused as to why "Mephiles" would save the "Iblis Trigger"'s life.) This and other events help Silver learn more about Mephiles and his intentions. In Sonic Rivals, Shadow, at first, does not trust Silver's instincts about "Dr. Eggman's" real personality. After realizing that Silver's speculations were right, the two form a bond and they help each other in the final stage of the game.

A primary enemy of Silver is Eggman Nega, as seen in Sonic Rivals and Sonic Rush. Upon learning that "Eggman" was really Eggman Nega in disguise, Silver plans to defeat him and bring him back to the future. In the end Eggman Nega is transformed into a card himself. Silver plans on going back to his time with Nega after he finds all of the people who are transformed into cards.

Theme Songs

Trivia

  • Official concept artwork released by the fansite "Sonic Cult" [2] shows an early design of Silver.[3] The main differences from the current final design include a long orange mane around his neck, and bright blue eyes. His boots are also quite different. It is unknown however whether Yuji Uekawa, the main character designer of the Sonic series, actually produced the artwork.
  • More concept art of Silver was released in an interview with IGN, which was generally less similar to his current design. Notable designs include a hedgehog wearing a futuristic headset and another with markings on its quills. It is also revealed that Silver was originally named "Venice" [4] after Venice, Italy, the place Soleanna is based on. He was also considered to be a mink, but that idea was later abandoned. Silver is also said to have gone through over 50 designs before reaching his final look. [5]
  • The bridge in Silver's theme song bears a resemblance to the Green Hill Zone music. Composer Lee Brotherton stated that this was not intentional, but has been noted and appreciated. [6]
  • Silver bears a similarity to Future Trunks of Dragon Ball Z. Like Trunks, Silver is from the future who comes to the present to change history. Also, he is a hedgehog who has a Super Transformation like the other characters (Sonic/Goku and Shadow/Vegeta). Silver's quil like hair style resembles that of Trunks post Room of Spirit and Time training as an USSj. Even the english voice actors for both parts share a similar tone and sound to them. The only difference is that Silver is not related to any of the mentioned hedgehogs.
  • Many fans have noticed key similarities Sonic, Shadow and Silver share: They are Hedgehogs whose names all start with an "S", they are all at least 3 ft tall, they each have Chaos Control and use a super form with red eyes and yellow-ish coloring. Also they have all been introduced in special games (Sonic in the very first game, Shadow in the 10th Anniversary game, and Silver in the 15th Anniversary game).
  • In Sonic and the Secret Rings, at stage one of the last level, you can hear Silver shouting "Incoming!"
