Violent Night is a 2022 American action-comedy Christmas film starring David Harbour as Santa Claus. It is directed by Tommy Wirkola, and written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller. It also stars John Leguizamo, Alex Hassell, Alexis Louder, Edi Patterson, Cam Gigandet, Leah Brady, and Beverly D'Angelo.
Violent Night had its world premiere at the New York Comic Con on October 7, 2022 and was released theatrically in the United States on December 2, by Universal Pictures.
Premise
On Christmas Eve, a paramilitary group robs and takes a wealthy family hostage in their home but encounter resistance with the appearance of Santa Claus.[3]

- David Harbour as Santa Claus, a legendary Christmas gift-bringer and former Viking warrior.
- John Leguizamo as Jimmy Martinez / Ebenezer Scrooge, the leader of the mercenaries.
- Alex Hassell as Jason Lightstone, one of Gertrude's grown children.
- Alexis Louder as Linda Matthews, Jason's estranged wife who is forced to spend the holidays at the house so that the couple’s daughter can have a nice Christmas.
- Cam Gigandet as Morgan Steele, Alva's second husband and a wannabe action star/filmmaker.
- Edi Patterson as Alva Steele-Lightstone, Gertrude's hard-drinking daughter.
- Leah Brady as Gertrude "Trudy" Lightstone, the daughter of Jason and Linda.[4][5]
- Beverly D'Angelo as Gertrude Lightstone, the foul-mouthed matriarch who heads the family corporation and makes her kids fight for her love.
- Brendan Fletcher as Krampus, Scrooge's lead henchman.

Production
In March 2020, Universal Pictures announced that it acquired the original screenplay to Violent Night by Pat Casey and Josh Miller and that 87North Productions would produce.[6] In November 2021, David Harbour was cast in the lead role, with Tommy Wirkola set to direct.[7] In early 2022, John Leguizamo, Beverly D'Angelo, Alex Hassell, Alexis Louder, Edi Patterson, Cam Gigandet, and André Eriksen were confirmed to star.[8][9][10] The shooting of the film took place from January–March 2022,[11] and had commenced by February 2022 in Winnipeg.[8]

Box office
In the United States and Canada, Violent Night is projected to gross around $10 million from 3,200 theaters in its opening weekend.[2]
Critical response
On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 67% of 98 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 6.2/10. The website's consensus reads: "Violent Night may not be as wildly entertaining as its concept might suggest, but all in all, it's still sometimes a ho-ho-whole lot of fun."[13] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 55 out of 100 based on 26 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[14]
