Alfredo Cospito (born 1967) is an Italian anarchist. After kneecapping the head of the Italian nuclear power company Ansaldo Nucleare in 2012, he was convicted in 2014 and sentenced to ten years imprisonment. His sentence was then increased to life without parole for his involvement in a 2006 bombing, although nobody was hurt. Cospito was placed in the restrictive Article 41-bis prison regime in a Sardinian prison as punishment for his correspondences with fellow anarchists.

On 20 October 2022, Cospito began an ongoing and indefinite hunger strike against the conditions of the 41-bis regime. There have been multiple attacks and solidarity actions in various countries across the world. On 19 December, a court in Rome rejected the appeal of Cospito against 41-bis.

Shooting and arrest

Cospito was born in Pescara in 1967 and lived in Turin.[1][2] On 7 May 2012, he rode on a Yamaha motorbike with his accomplice, Nicola Gai, to the Genoa house of Roberto Adinolfi, CEO of the Italian nuclear power company Ansaldo Nucleare. The pair shot Adinolfi in the leg three times, facturing his knee,[3] kneecapping him, a tactic used previously by the Red Brigades.[2][4] A letter sent to the Corriere della Sera newspaper claimed responsibility for the shooting on behalf of the Olga Nucleus of the Informal Anarchist Federation. The name was a reference to Olga Ikonomidou, an imprisoned member of the Conspiracy of Fire Nuclei.[2][5] In the early hours of the morning of September 14, 2012 Cospito was arrested with Gai in Turin and convicted of the shooting, the pair apparently preparing to leave the country.[6] He received a sentence of ten years and eight months.[7] Nicola Gai was released in 2020.[8]

Following Operation Scripta Manent in which the Divisione Investigazioni Generali e Operazioni Speciali (DIGOS) targeted Italian anarchist communities, Cospito was also charged along with Anna Beniamino with "a massacre without victims" regarding a 2006 bombing of a Carabinieri Cadet School near Turin, claimed by Rivolta Anonima e Tremenda / Federazione Anarchica Informal, which resulted in no casualties. The Court of Cassation then ruled that the crime had a terrorist function, so the sentence was upgraded to life without parole. Cospito was also entered into the Article 41-bis prison regime in the Bancali supermax prison, in the comune of Sassari, Sardinia, justified under the pretext that he corresponded with anarchists outside of prison and that he was the "head and organizer of an association with terrorist purposes ”.[9][7] The 41-bis directive was originally created to stop Mafia bosses communicating with their outside organizations and involves solitary confinement for 22 hours every day, with visits restricted to one hour per month. All access to rehabilitation programs is blocked.[10][7] Over 200 criminal lawyers and jurists signed a letter condemning the judicial treatment of Cospito.[7]

In May 2012, 53 year old Roberto Adinolfi, a CEO of the nuclear power company Ansaldo Nucleare was attacked and non-fatally wounded. on Monday 7 May, Adinolfi as he exited his home in Genoa was shot in the knees by two men wearing helmets on a Yamaha motorbike. The attackers fired three shots, fracturing Andinolfi's right knee.

Hunger strike

On 20 October 2022, Cospito began an indefinite hunger strike against the conditions of the 41-bis regime.[7] In support, anarchist groups held demonstrations in Bologna, Turin and Rome,[11][9] with other anarchist prisoners throughout Europe entering hunger strike in solidarity with the struggle against 41-bis such as Juan Sorroche and accomplice Anna Beniamino in Italy and Ivan Alocco in France.[9] There have been multiple attacks and actions in various countries across the world including for example protests and actions against the Italian embassy in Chile and various actions in solidarity in Greece,[12] such as on the 2nd of December a Greek anarchist group called Revenge Cell Carlo Giuliani (named after Carlo Giuliani who was killed by police during the 2001 Genoa G8 summit), set alight two empty cars of senior Italian diplomat Susanna Schlein within the garage of her private residences, leading to an unusually large media and political interest. The alleged perpetrators released a communique five days later via Athens indymedia. The communique cited the reasons around Cospito's protest against the 41-bis regime, stating "The 41 bis is a regime of political, social and sensory extermination, aimed at the complete elimination of all contact with the outside world. Comrades, no matter how much they try to bury you, we will never forget you" as well as critiquing the migration and asylum policies of the Meloni government.[13][14]

On 19 December, a court in Rome rejected the appeal of Cospito against 41-bis.[1] Cospito had lost 35 kilos by of the end of the year, with what was described by his lawyer as a "worrying drop in potassium levels",[15] and "beginning to become critical".[16] Attention has been given to the hunger strike by various protests and solidarity actions inside and outside of Italy as well as public figures such as Luigi Manconi covering the strike in the media, creating a public conversation around hunger strikes and the ethics of the extended isolation of the 41-bis prison regime.[17][18][19][16]
