The Mandela Catalogue is an analog horror web series created by American YouTuber Alex Kister.[1] Created in 2021 when Kister was in summer college, it is set in the fictional Mandela County, Wisconsin, which is terrorized by "alternates", doppelgängers who coerce their victims to kill themselves. The series became popular online through analysis and reaction videos from internet users.

Setting and genre

The Mandela Catalogue is set during the 1990s and 2000s in the fictional Mandela County, Wisconsin, which is threatened by mysterious shape-shifting creatures known as Alternates that coerce humans to kill themselves via routinely subjecting them to extreme psychological torture, and can also manipulate audiovisual media.[2][3][4][5] The series draws heavily on Christian imagery, including depictions of angels and demons; the main antagonist claims to be Gabriel, the archangel who announced Jesus' birth. The series also contains allusions to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, and Noah and his ark.

The Mandela Catalogue is told non-chronologically through 4 "Volumes" and 6 shorts across two "Acts", the first of which was released on June 9, 2021.[6][7] It is part of a subgenre of found footage called analog horror.[4] Its installments are often presented as instructional videos from the fictional Department of Temporal Phenomena or corrupted versions of the cartoon Beginner's Bible, and are rendered in a VHS aesthetic.[2][3]

Development and production

The Mandela Catalogue was created by eighteen-year-old student Alex Kister from Hubertus, Wisconsin as a series of short videos he began in 2021 in summer college, and was Kister's first filmmaking project.[2][8] Kister originally created overthrone as a one-off video based on a high school writing project, and planned to make a series where he edited children's cartoons to be creepy.[8][9][10] However, due to the popularity of the video, Kister decided to continue making videos following the universe of overthrone in the modern day.[8][9][10]

Kister had little to no budget and used basic editing: scenes are shot in his home and characters are portrayed by his friends through still images and voiceover. In an interview with GQ, Kister said he wanted to develop his horror from "jump-scares that [...] cause a physiological reaction rather than a psychological reaction."[2]

Kister has said the series originally began as a creative outlet for the existential crisis he was dealing with, especially when it came to the subject of religion and Christianity.[8][10][11] The series was also inspired by the isolation and loss of security Kister experienced as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.[2] Kister has cited analog horror series The Walten Files, Gemini Home Entertainment, Local58, Surreal Broadcast, The Minerva Alliance, and Marble Hornets, and horror films such as The Shining and The Exorcist, as major influences on his work.[8][12]

The series' name came from the Mandela Effect.[13] It was originally going to be named "Timeshift Archives" due to a time travel aspect to the story that was later scrapped.[10][13]

In October 2022 Kister worked with Makeship to release merchandise for the series.[14]

Episodes

The main storyline of The Mandela Catalogue began in 2021 and is currently ongoing. The videos Alex Kister released so far are not in chronological order but are organized into two separate acts, of which the first is completed and the second is ongoing. The series is composed of two types of videos: "Volumes" are the longer episodes that primarily focus on the series main characters, while "shorts" focus more on the world the story is set in and the introduction of new characters and concepts to the main storyline

This tape, serving as the pilot episode, centers around a corrupted recording of an episode of The Beginners Bible, specifically the one covering the birth of Christ. The episode starts normally until the Archangel Gabriel appears before the Virgin Mary, where Gabriel's name and face are redacted and he speaks to Mary in binary. The binary code is translated as "I am the one true savior. I must reverse the delusion. Joseph is next". Gabriel can be seen whispering to Joseph through his window as he sleeps, telling him to "wake up", before he appears above the shepherds. Gabriel claims to be their "true savior" and knows "what makes them human" before smiling at the viewer with an elongated face. The episode ends with red text (suspected to be Gabriel) saying that he deceived humanity, before a smaller font from another character claims to be trapped in a tomb of sand.

The tape begins with a PSA in the 1980s from the fictional "U.S Department of Temporal Phenomenon" warning the public about the threat posed by hostile creatures known as "alternates". The USDTP explains alternates are humanoid organisms that are able to take on the appearance of others, albeit sometimes with deformed features (large head, long arms, etc.), and are reported to break into people's homes and attack residents using elements of psychological warfare. The USDTP advises the public to stay indoors, keep a weapon for protection, and to follow the THINK Principle should they encounter an alternate:

Tell an authority figure about your encounter

Hinder the alternates movement

Identify the class type

Neutralize the alternate (if safe to do so)

Kill Yourself there's not enough room for the two of us (This slide quickly changes to Know your place in reality)

The tape then discusses the different classes of alternates: Type 1 are Doppelgängers, alternates that look just like their victim. Type 2 alternates are skipped over (though a now-deleted video about the THINK Principle depicts Gabriel as an example of a Type 2 alternate). After showing disturbing pictures of alternates with physical abnormalities to demonstrate Type 3 alternates, the video shifts to a phone call between Mark Heathcliff and Cesar Torres (respectively labeled Victims 1 and 2) in September of 1992. Cesar calls Mark and convinces him to come to check his home's security system as he supposedly takes his mom to the hospital. However, Mark realizes upon returning home that he has been followed by an alternate, which traps him in his room and torments him for two days. Mark attempts to confront it, as the police never came for him, but ends up committing suicide. Following this, the tape cuts to an instructional video for emergency operators in Mandela County. The section reveals that if a caller reports an alternate encounter, they should not send help and simply assure the person that help is on the way before hanging up. The phrase "Nothing is worth the risk" is repeated as the clip ends. The volume ends with a recording of a "Toddler Stress Assessment Video", which is interrupted by a story written by a 4-year-old Mark. He wakes up one night, scared, and wants to go to his mother's room. He notes that there is "scary knocking" on the door. After opening the door, he walks towards his mother's room. He then sees the "intruder" standing in a corner. He ends this by saying he fell asleep.
3"Intruder Alert"Alex KisterAlex Kister5:48August 18, 2021 (2021-08-18)
The tape opens with a close-up of a man's face, whispering "I am inside your home", before cutting to a Mandela County PSA advising parents how to care for and protect their children. When discussing the danger of a child watching graphic content on the television, the phrase "they exist on different spectrums" is depicted as the tape cuts away. A couple standing outside a crying child's room is shown, with the tape instructing them to stay outside until the crying stops, and once it does the mother goes in. The infant has vanished from its cradle and the mother sees the man from the start of the video smiling at her through the baby's CRT television set. Distraught at the sight of her missing infant, the mother hangs herself afterwards. Following this, an Emergency Alert Broadcast reports that 3,426 children have gone missing from Mandela and its surrounding counties. An investigation reel put together by the MCPD (Mandela County Police Department) shows images taken from a camera within the house of the couple shown before. The images show the face in a physical form partially obscured by shadows and the victim's corpse being "tampered with" by an invisible force. The officer in charge, Lieutenant Thatcher Davis, rules out the possibility of this entity being an alternate.
4"Metaphysical Awareness Disorder (MAD)"Alex KisterAlex Kister1:52September 30, 2021 (2021-09-30)
The tape contains an informational video describing the titular mental disorder spreading rapidly throughout the population as of 1982. MAD is a verbal illness brought about by alternates when they tell people information they don't desire to know. This information causes people to go insane, with 97% of people committing suicide as a result. Since the remaining 3% are able to "reverse the delusion", the tape instructs viewers to avoid religious practices and philosophical concepts to protect themselves. However, when the audio instructs viewers to stay with loved ones to improve their mental stability, the text changes to instruct the viewer to ignore the man watching them in their room.
5"Exhibition"Alex KisterAlex Kister8:33October 30, 2021 (2021-10-30)
This tape primarily consists of an evidence reel put together by MCPD officer Lieutenant Thatcher Davis, who is investigating the death of Mark Heathcliff. Footage retrieved from Mark's personal camcorder shows Mark traveling to a cathedral he once attended and searching his house at night. The footage taken in his home shows alternates, including a face on his analog television, stalking him weeks before his death, leading Thatcher to believe this was to get him into a paranoid and distressed state. Following this, an episode of the Beginner's Bible, this time talking about Noah's Ark, begins playing. The video glitches to show Gabriel appearing by Noah and telling him that he will bring another creature on the boat. Gabriel says that it will also carry a message and Noah should wait until a "change in his mind" happens. The video ends with a message from the USDTP ordering citizens to comply with the newly issued "Television and Mirror Destruction Order".
6"Mandela Catalogue Vol. 2"Alex KisterAlex Kister20:35January 18, 2022 (2022-01-18)
This volume takes place in January 2009, during "Winter Break", and follows Adam Murray and Jonah Marshall, paranormal investigators in the "Bythorne Paranormal Society" (BPS) that are wanted by the FBI. They are called by a woman who pays them to stay at her house for three nights to supposedly help the spirit of her deceased cat move on. When they finally arrive at the home (revealed to be Cesar's home) they investigate for a day to no avail, before Adam encounters a voice at night. The voice calls Adam a fool for "following the shepherd" and warns him not to make him "wake the others". An alternate (with an appearance similar to Ghostface) appears before Adam, but he seems to be unaffected. Adam sleeps through the night and wakes up to find "NOTHING IS WORTH THE RISK" written on the walls, and hears meowing coming from the basement. Adam gets into an argument with Jonah over their radios, as Jonah is sleeping in the car. He implores Adam not to go into the basement. Adam refuses, telling Jonah to leave. Jonah drives away and Adam goes into the basement, where he finds that an analog television was making the cat noises. The grinning face from Intruder Alert appears on the screen and begins to interact with Adam. When Adam asks, "what are you", the face says, "don't you remember me" while images from the previous episodes flash across the screen. The video cuts to Jonah driving along the highway, while a voice on the radio mocks him for leaving Adam behind. He pulls over and gets out of the car, and a noise of pain or surprise is heard.
7"Mandela Catalogue Vol. 333"Alex KisterAlex Kister26:41June 4, 2022 (2022-06-04)
The volume starts with a call between a divorced couple, Lynn and Jude Murray, about their baby, who has been constantly crying for unknown reasons. Jude believes Lynn is overreacting and that it might just be an imaginary friend. The tape cuts to newly promoted Lieutenant Thatcher Davis and his partner, Sergeant Ruth Weaver, who are investigating Mark Heathcliff's death in September 1992. An evidence reel, identifying Cesar as the culprit, analyzes Mark's camcorder and cassette player, which shows Cesar's alternate verbally tormenting Mark outside his door. The insides of Mark's personal notebook is shown, depicting his descent into madness as he loses his faith and asks "who have I been praying to all this time?" over and over again until it says "my eyes are wide open". The video then cuts to a tape that Dave Lee, a representative for local business MandelaTECH, recovered for Thatcher. The recovered tape is for a show called "Might of the Subconscious", and depicts a puppet (similar in appearance to Jim Henson's Limbo) named Stanley talking to a child through their TV. Stanley asks the child to think of "what makes up a good friend", and manifests that "friend" into existence as an alternate, saying "your new friend is somewhere in your home." The tape cuts to body cam footage from Thatcher and Weaver, as they are called by Jude Murray about an intruder in his home. Thatcher and Weaver find Lynn's dangling body (as seen in "Intruder Alert") before Weaver is presumably killed by the alternate and Thatcher escapes to the police station. The video cuts to cameras showing the alternate getting closer to the station, singing Amazing Grace. The alternate then lowers down in front of Thatcher while imitating multiple victims. It then hovers toward thatcher before cutting to the alternate kneeling down next to him, using its hands to morph its mouth into a smile and laughing at Thatcher. Thatcher shoots the alternate and escapes, despite the shot not doing anything. Text reading, "THERE'S NOT ENOUGH ROOM FOR THE TWO OF US, LIEUTENANT", appears on the screen as the alternate moves erratically in front of the camera, its face transforming into Thatcher's.
8"every day gets brighter"Alex KisterThorne Baker2:27June 6, 2022 (2022-06-06)
The video starts with a tape titled "every day gets brighter" getting played. Thatcher, who recorded the tape, says that he is terrified of what happened at the police station. He swears that he will kill that alternate and ends the tape by saying the alternate took something from him, and that part of him wishes he wasn't alive.

11"Interlude"Alex KisterAlex Kister3:22September 5, 2022 (2022-09-05)

The tape begins with a population report for Mandela County, which shows the county population dropping from 15,000 in 1992 to barely 1,000 in 2009. The tape cuts to a video from "BPS Productions 2007", sent by Sarah Heathcliff, Mark's younger sister, to Adam. The video contains a propaganda tape from the USDTP recovered from the MCPD, congratulating the public and law enforcement for helping eliminate "an unforeseen threat" (referring to the face from "Intruder Alert" and the banning of televisions). The tape then cuts to a guide on the three types of alternate assimilations:

Flawed Assimilation: The alternate has taken on an appearance similar to its victim, but was unable to complete the transformation, resulting in a distorted appearance (missing facial features, long limbs, etc.);

Complete Assimilation: The alternate has fully taken on the appearance of its victim and is indistinguishable from the other;

Overdriven Assimilation: The alternate has taken on too many of the victims features and takes on an inhuman form as a result.

The photos used to depict Overdriven Assimilation reveal that the alternate from vol. 2 (dubbed "The Preacher" by Alex Kister) is a mimic of a nun. We then cut to an image of Mark's house and the church from Exhibition with screaming being heard.
12"Mandela Catalogue Vol. 4"Alex KisterAlex Kister40:54November 25, 2022 (2022-11-25)
The tape starts with the retelling oh how God created all things in the Book of Genesis. The tale differs from real life when telling the story of Adam and Eve, as Gabriel (confirmed to be the Anti-Christ by Alex Kister) gives Adam an apple from the Tree of Knowledge, who then goes to confront a frightened Eve. The tape transitions to 2009, where Evelin Miller, Adam's ex-girlfriend, is working for Dave Lee at MandelaTECH. She finds a tape intended for Thatcher Davis and watches it on Dave's hidden CRT TV, where it is shown to be the "Child Stress Assessment" video from Vol. 1. Following this, the video cuts to Sarah Heathcliff, currently wanted by the FBI, meeting Adam after she founds the BPS at her high school. In July 2007, Adam traumatizes Sarah when he takes her to a crime scene and lures out several alternates on camera, leading Adam to seek someone else to accompany him on investigations (who turns out to be Jonah). Two years later, immediately following vol. 2, Adam makes it back to his home using Jonah's abandoned car and gets into an argument with Sarah about his apathetic response to Jonah's death. Thatcher Davis, who's been in hiding since the events of Vol. 333, is shown mourning the death of Ruth Weaver, only to see an alternate resembling her watching him in his home. Adam makes a memorial video for Jonah, but the video glitches to show Evelin discussing Adam's concerning behavior and dashcam footage showing Jonah being mocked by an alternate in his car before his death. The footage cuts to a promotional video from MandelaTECH showing off a piece of software called "Face Studio 2", which allows users to make a 3D head based on photos of their own face. The video glitches to show Lynn Murrays hanging corpse as the 3D head praises "the true savior", and talking about how they were too scared to look as tangled limbs "danced" around the room. The head then stretches and morphs into a similar shape of that to the alternate seen in Vol. 333. The video cuts to show Dave, waiting outside the local cathedral for his friend O'Brien, who offered him a job at the church he works at. The sky darkens and Gabriel appears before Dave, saying that he's a fool for "following the shepherd". Dave, believing Gabriel not to be real, rebukes him, but Gabriel reveals that Dave "has already done all of his bidding" before killing him. Evelin, fired by Dave for finding his TV, goes to the empty MCPD station to get a job there. Instead, she finds files for the Murrays about how their baby (confirmed to be Adam) failed to respond to the stimuli in the Stress Assessment. After finding this, the power in the station cuts. Alarms go off and a pair of hands appear above Evelin. The video cuts back to Adam, who is being contacted by an unknown user on his messaging app. The user exposes himself as the Intruder, who reveals himself to also be Stanley and the face on the TV. The Intruder addresses Adam as "Murray", and tells him that "your skin is not your own" and "you aren't the real you". This gets cut off by Sarah calling Adam and asking who he is talking to. The video ends with Gabriel (using the text from "Overthrone") proclaiming that he deceived "the Mandela prophet" and that he has "their prayers and records". He remarks "it begins today" as pictures of Adam's face (in the format of Face Studio 2) appear on the screen.

Cast

Major Characters

Alternates are creatures with the ability to mimic people's voices and appearances who use psychological tactics against their victims.[15] Some alternates, on the other hand, have distorted faces and forms.[16] They were inspired by doppelgängers, clones, and the Wood Crawlers from Gemini Home Entertainment.[17][18] They are voiced by Michelle Strohwig (Vol. 1, Vol. 2, Vol. 333)[19][17] and by Alex Kister and Andrew Long (Vol. 333).[20][19]

Lt. Thatcher Davis is voiced and played by Thorne Baker.[19]

Gabriel, also known as O'Brien, is the antagonist of the series and is voiced by Kyle DeNigris.[10][19]

Mark Heathcliff is voiced by Alex Kister.[17][21]

Sarah Heathcliff is voiced by Rachel Ridley.[19]

The Intruder, whose name is Six[17][22] and who has also gone by Stanley, is voiced by Leon Rodriguez.[19][23] He has been confirmed to be a separate species from the alternates and is able to project his image through technology.[17][24]Stanley, the character's puppet form, was inspired by Jim Henson's "Limbo: The Organized Mind".[20]

Dave Lee, owner of MandelaTech, is voiced and played by Alex Kister.[19]

Jonah Marshall is voiced by Gabriel Linan.[19]

Evelin Miller is voiced and played by Spidey.[19]

Adam Murray is voiced by Tyler Osborne.[19]

Minor Characters

Lola Adair is heard during one of the television segments during Vol. 4 and is voiced by Christina Kister.[19]

Jude Murray, Adam's father, is voiced by Michael Vale.[19]

Lynn Murray, Adam's mother, is voiced by -Lighth0use-.[19]

Cesar Torres is Mark's friend who is replaced by an alternate prior to the events of the series. He is voiced by Andrew Long.[17][21]

Sergeant Ruth Weaver is a friend of Thatcher Davis who dies in 1992. She is voiced by Bee "Fruitmasseuse" L.[19]

Additional Voices

  • The concerned friend in Vol. 1 is voiced by Faith Cunningham.[19]
  • The woman on the phone in Vol. 2 is voiced by Faith Cunningham.[25]
  • The Bythorne Operator in Vol. 333 is voiced by Aidan Elliot.[19]
  • The school secretary in Vol. 333 is voiced by Emily Hannak.[19]
  • The Radio Host in Vol. 4 is voiced by Michelle Strohwig.[23]
  • The TV Narrator in Vol. 4 is voiced by Michael Vale.[23]

Music

The series has used multiple songs in the public domain, including Amazing Grace, Ave Maria, Battle Hymn of the Republic, Marines' Hymn, and The Stars and Stripes Forever.[26]

Original music for the series was composed by Kister, Thorne Baker, and AJCW.[26][27]

Reception

Audience

The Mandela Catalogue grew popular through reaction videos and analysis on YouTube and quickly gained a strong following. Several popular YouTube channels have covered the series, including CoryxKenshin,[28] Film Theory,[29] Jacksepticeye,[30] Markiplier,[31] SomeOrdinaryGamers,[32][33] and Wendigoon.[33][34]

Some users criticized the overreliance of analog horror tropes.[2] Vol. 4 received particular criticism for its use of live action segments filmed with green screens. Some viewers disliked the scenes' lack of realism, while Kister said the lack of realism was purposeful and an attempt to give the segments an uncanny valley quality.[10]

As of February 2023, Kister's YouTube channel had over thirty million views.[6]

Critical reception

Dread Central praised The Mandela Catalogue as "the supreme [example] of what analog horror looks and sounds like", adding that "the sense of insecurity that comes from knowing you’ll be frightened is constantly visually manipulated."[4] Student newspaper The Post favorably compared its use of the uncanny valley as a horror technique to The Walten Files.[5] It was also praised by GQ.[2] While TLK Magazine praised the series' worldbuilding, it criticized its "monotone" voice acting as detracting from The Mandela Catalogue's tone.[3]

Adaptations

Video Games

Indie games Maple County (2021), Assessment Examination and Mandela Invasion are based on the series.[35]

Mandela Invasion, created by Broken Arrow Games, uses the premise that alternates are attempting to break into the player's house.[35][36] The game received exposure online through a video by YouTuber Markiplier .[37]

Maple County was developed by one of the series' voice actors, Thorne Baker, in 2021, prior to his collaboration with the series.[17][35][38] The game is framed as an interactive training tape from the Maple County Police Department, in which players must determine which photos portray alternates and which portray actual people.[39]

A Friday Night Funkin' mod has been made for the series, aptly named The Funkdela Catalogue.[40]

The Scrimblo Catalogue

The Scrimblo Catalogue is a self-parody made by Kister. The two episodes make fun of Kister's editing skills and storytelling.[41][42]
