This project is one of the biggest projects of the Bangladesh government. Bangladesh had no previous experience in implementing such projects. Therefore, in 2019 the Construction of the project has been given to China. China completed the project in 2023 as per the earlier schedule and on 20th March of the same year, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh commissioned the project and handed it over to the Bangladesh Navy. BNS Sheikh Hasina is a new naval base that has been developed for the Bangladesh Navy. This is the first ever full-fledged submarine base of Bangladesh Navy. Built at a cost of $1.21 billion, the base can accommodate a total of six submarines and eight warships at a time. It will allow for safe and swift movement of the submarines in case of emergency, as the base is located at the Bay of Bengal.

History

On 3 March 2017 Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation stone of a submarine base in Pekua in the coastal city of Cox's Bazar.[1] In 2019 the construction of the base started whih completed in 2023. On 20th March of the same year, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh commissioned the submarine base. The Submarine Base has been named after the Prime minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina.[2]

Facilities

BNS Sheikh Hasina is the largest submarines base in the South Asia.[3] In addition to submarines, this base also has a full-fledged naval dock where eight ships can be anchored at a time. This facility can be used for maintenance and repair of ships and also as a base for logistics and armaments.[4]
