Sofía Otero (Barakaldo, Spain, 31 March 2013) is an actress from Biscay in Spain. In her first film role, she acted the part of a transgender child.[1][2]

In 2023 at the age of nine, Otero won the Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance at the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival (also known as the Berlinale) for her starring role in the film 20,000 Species of Bees, becoming the youngest person to win that award.[1][3][4]

Biography

Sofía Otero Labrador was born 31 March 2013 in Barakaldo and lives in Basauri, both in the Biscay province of Basque Country in northern Spain. After auditioning 500 girls,[5] director Estibaliz Urresola Solaguren cast her as the protaganist for 20,000 Species of Bees.[6] This was Otero's first role.[1] The film tells the story of a transgender girl, and its effect on the family.[7][8] To help an accurate portrayal, Naizen [eu; es], a regional association for the families of transgender minors, worked with the director and provided guidance for Otero.[9] In the film, the family crosses borders, including the one that separates Bayonne in France and Laudio/Llodio in Spanish Basque Country. Although Spanish is the film's predominant language, Basque and French are also heard. Urresola seeks naturalism in the conversations between the mother (Patricia López Arnaiz) and her children. Gender dysphoria is dealt with somewhat didactically, but with emotion. "Why am I like this?" asks little Cocó (Sofía Otero).[10]

As the director explains:

Spanish: La niña no se transforma, adquiere a lo largo de la película las herramientas para expresar quién es. La que se transforma es la familia.

— Estibaliz Urrusola[11]

Stephanie Bunbury of Deadline praised Otero's performance, writing that she "shows an instinctive, unforced and generous understanding of how difficult her character's life must be."[12] Lee Marshall of Screen Daily wrote that "Sofia Otero is never less than compelling, her face a deep pool that becomes a magnet for the audience [...]"[13]

In 2023, at the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival (also known as the Berlinale), Otero won the Silver Bear for Best Performance. She is the youngest actor to have won that award.[2][14] The award was given to Otero by Kristen Stewart, who was the head of the jury. With Stewart on the jury were the casting director Francine Maisler [d], the actress Golshifteh Farahani, and the film directors Valeska Grisebach, Radu Jude, Carla Simón, and Johnnie To.[15][16]

In April 2023, the Basauri City Council was to pay tribute to Otero for winning her Silver Bear award.[17] Otero was also part of the honourees when 20,000 Species Of Bee won the award for a female cast ensemble at the 2023 Hong Kong International Film Festival[18] and the Maguey Award for Best Performance by an Ensemble at the 2023 Guadalajara International Film Festival.[19]
