Vice admiral Mohammad Nazmul Hassan, (born: 1967) NPP, ndc, ncc, psc is the four star Admiral of the Bangladesh Navy who is currently serving as the 17th Chief of the Naval Staff.[2] Earlier he was Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Operations).[3] Prior to join here, he served as Commander, Chattogram Naval Area. Before that, he was High Commissioner of Bangladesh to the Republic of Maldives.

Military career

Hassan was commissioned in the Bangladesh Navy on 1 July 1986. He Commanded four warships of Bangladesh Navy. He also commanded the Bangladesh Naval Academy, Naval Aviation and the Navy’s Special Force, SWADS. During his tenure as an Ambassador of Maldives, Bangladesh has received 201,600 vaccine doses as a gesture of goodwill. He signed a bilateral agreement with Maldives' Health Minister Ahmed Naseem for the AstraZeneca Vaccines.[4] In response, medical team of the Bangladesh Armed Forces sent to Maldives to assist in the Maldives Government’s vaccination programme.[5] Admiral Hassan assumed the duties of High Commissioner of Bangladesh in the Republic of Maldives on 17 March 2020 and discharge until January 2022.[6] He also served as the commander of Bangladesh Navy Fleet.[7] Before that, he was Director of Naval Operations and Director of Naval Intelligence at Naval Headquarters.[8] He appointed as Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Personnel) on January, 2023.

Contribution

Rehabilitation of FDMN in Bhasanchar

During his office at Commander Chattogram Naval Area, he continued the process of rehabilitation of forcibly displaced Myanmar citizens in Bhasan Char.[9] Moreover, he made a special contribution to the rehabilitation of homeless poor people in remote coastal areas by implementing shelter projects under the office of the honorable Prime Minister.

Role for bilateral relations during COVID-19

During his office as High Commissioner of Bangladesh to the Republic of Maldives from 2020 to 2022 he played an important role[10] in the development of bilateral relations between Bangladesh and Maldives by sending a medical team of the Bangladesh Armed Forces to assist the vaccination program during COVID-19[11] situation of the Government of Maldives, attending the centenary ceremony of the birth of His Excellency Bangabandhu and the first bilateral visit of the Honorable Prime Minister to the Maldives.

Personal life

Hassan is married to Begum Nadia Sultana Hasan and the couple have a son and a daughter.[12]
