Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (German: Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht), registered as BSW – For Reason and Justice, (German: BSW – Für Vernunft und Gerechtigkeit) is a registered association created by members of the The Left for the purposes of founding a new political party.[1]
The plans for the new party were presented at a federal press conference on 23 October 2023 by members of the Bundestag Sahra Wagenknecht, Amira Mohamed Ali, Christian Leye, the Bonn left-wing politician Lukas Schön and the Karlsruhe IT entrepreneur and investor Ralph Suikat.[2][3] Mohamed Ali announced that she, Wagenknecht, Leye and seven other current members of the Bundestag faction will leave The Left party and form part of the new formed BSW, but would remain part of the The Left's parliamentary fraction to ensure the Left still maintained parliamentary privileges. The main goal of the BSW aossciation for the next time is to build the structure for the new party.[4]
History
Sahra Wagenknecht was a prominent member of The Left party, and her political positions are generally identified as populist.[5] Although she was co-leader of the party from 2015 to 2019, conflict with other party members on topics such as refugees, COVID-19 vaccination and the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine had led to speculation since 2021 that she would leave The Left and found a splinter party.[5] This speculation increased in the run-up to the 2023 state elections in Hesse and Bavaria, at which the Left party failed to reach the 5% electoral threshold in either state.[6] The success of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) led Wagenknecht to call for a left-wing populist party that could compete with the AfD but respect the Basic Law of Germany.[7]
The association, based in Karlsruhe, was entered in the association register at the district court in Mannheim on 26 September 2023.[8]
In mid-October, over 50 members of The Left submitted an application for Wagenknecht's exclusion from the party, to prevent her from building a new party with the resources of The Left.[9] Members of the party and political commentators blamed the ongoing speculation about the founding of a new party and the resulting breakup of the Left partly for poor results in the election campaigns in Bavaria and Hesse.[6]
Martin Schirdewan, federal chairmen of the left Die Linke declared that members who are committed to the founding of a rival party by BSW will be excluded.[10] According to Tagesspiegel, the Federal Executive Board of The Left passed a resolution of incompatibility with BSW.[11]
