This edit: 1) Creates a table of the various types of premieres, moving any existing definitions into it; 2) Adds an example of a film with multiple premier types, i.e. Aladdin; 3) Promotes the English definition, i.e. the title of this Premiere Wikipedia article, as the initial definition, & converts all "premières" into "premieres"; 4) Removes the Mivenue 'inline citation', as it is a YouTube "online premier" example, rather than a supporting definitional article.

Film premiere for Flatliners, Grauman's Chinese Theatre, Hollywood, 1990

A premiere (French: première, 1er, transl. first, 1st[1]) is the debut (first public presentation) of a work, i.e. play, film, dance, musical composition etc, or even a performer in that work.[2][3][4][5] There are a number of different types:

Premiere types
Category Definition
World The first public presentation.[6]
International The first public presentation outside the country of origin.[6]
Continental The first public presentation in a specified continent.[6]
Country The first public presentation in a specified country.[6]
Regional The first public presentation in a specified region.[6]
State The first public presentation in a specified country's state.
City The first public presentation in a specified city.
Online The first publication on the Internet, if there has been no in-person premiere.

A single work will often have many premieres, e.g. in 2019 the United States movie Aladdin held its world premiere at the Grand Rex in Paris (France) on 8 May 2019[7], it first regional premiere in Jordan on 13 May 2019, and it premiered in the United States on 24 May 2019.[8][9]

When a work originates in a country that speaks a different language from that in which it is receiving its premiere, it is possible to have two premieres for the same work, e.g., the French language version of the play The Maids by Jean Genet received its British premiere (which was also its world premiere) in 1952[10], and subsequently its English language premiere in Britain in 1956.[11]

History

Raymond F. Betts attributes the introduction of the film premiere to showman Sid Grauman, who founded Grauman's Chinese Theatre.[12] The first ever Hollywood premiere was for the 1922 film Robin Hood, starring Douglas Fairbanks, in front of the Egyptian Theatre.[13] By the late 1920s the red carpet had become synonymous with film premieres.
