Izhórian muséum (Muséum of Izhórian cúlture, Ingrian: Ižorin muuzeja) — museum of Izhorian culture and history located in Ruchyi of Vistino rural settlement of Kingiseppsky District, Leningrad Oblast. There's also an izhorian culture center working where the visitors can familiarize themselves with handicraft or learn an Ingrian language.

Museum colection was started in 1990 and in 1993 museum opened its doors in the building of Ruchyi elementary. The collection is updated constantly, mainly by locals of surrounding villages. As an addition to houseware there is an archeological exhibition and a collection of authentic photographs made at the beginning of XX century complementing the sight on the history of the Izhorian people.

History

Museum collection on izhorian history and culture was founded at April 1, 1990[1]. At October1, 1993 the museum was opened with the support of «Baltika» fishing team; museum was based on the said collection and located in the building of Ruchyi elementary[2]. At the beginning museum was rather small, had departamental status and had very narrow exhibition, but few years after got a status of ethnographical one, and its collection noticeably grew. Firstly, the growth was made by donation of locals of surrounding villages and other places inhabbited by Izhorians[3].

In 2014 museum started to study Izhorian traditional pottery planning to revive it, so they've opened «Soyka» pottery center[4]. In 2015 the museum team has fully changed. In 2019 their work on rebuilding the museum has attracted the attention of the «Nord Stream 2» enterprize, who offered them a financial help[5][4]. So in the beginning of the yearthe first stone of the future language and handicraft center was layed[3]; the main planned specialization of the center was pottery[5]. The center was constructed from June to December of 2019 and was opened at March 13, 2020 by the governor of Leningrad Oblast Aleksandr Drozdenko[4].

Museum and center were working at April 2022[5].

Description

Museum is located in Ruchyi village of Vistino rural settlement of Kingiseppsky District inLeningrad Oblast. While Ruchyi village is located next to the rural settlement center — Vistino, and the museum is near the border of these two places[6], most of the sources locate the museum in Vistino[1][2][3]. Museum adress is 80, Tsentralnaya street[3][6], and there are two buildings. Former elementary school built in 1960s has museum exhibition in it[7], while the second one built in 2019 is used by Ingrian language and handicrafts center[4]. There's also a wooden anchor near the museum entrance[3][7].

Te museum and the center are ruled by Department of Culture of «Kingiseppsky District» Municipality[2], there are director, curator, guide emloyed as well as the part-time cleaner. 1500 visitors come to the museum annualy[1], coming mostly from Leningrad Oblast, Saint Petersburg and Finland[2].

Museum

Museum exhibition is shown on the first floor of the building and takes two rooms connected with the arch. The exhibits presented are showing the history of Izhorians from the stone tools and other archeological finds to the historical pictures of XX century and real houseware. Notable part of the exhibition is about fishing: there are hooks, fishing nets, foats and the fishermen clothing presented. Few models of traditional Izhorian fishing boats are also presented there. Farming tools and some personal belongings are also presented. Valuable part of the museum collection are different traditional Izhorian clothes, mostly female: there are casual and festive outfits made between XIX and XX century, fabric and knitted goods with traditional ornaments, and also working tools of tailors and weavers and traditional round chests for dowry. Pottery items are an important part of the collection; they are mostly brought from the Bolshoye Stremleniye village[3][7][8]. Addition to the exhibition are drawings and documents. Most of the housewares in the museum were donated by inhabitants of Vistino and other Izhorian villages in the area[3][7], including those that were created by villagers themselves.

Archeological exhibition can be described separately, because it has artifacts from kurgans excavations in Kingiseppsky and Lomonosovsky Districts. Among others they show items from XIV century Izhorian grave and XVI century stone cross from Bolshoye Stremleniye village that was donated to the museum by locals[3][7]. Museum workers organized a folklore ensemble, participate in organisation of local holidays and take part in festivals, including all-Russian ones[3]. Museum regularily hosts different exhibitions[9], and participates in «My homeland is Leningrad Oblast» (Russian: Мой родной край — Ленинградская область) federal project[10].

Language and skills center

Language and skills centerе building consists of fully equipped pottery warehouse, exhibition hall and few staff rooms with full area of 153 m²[4]. Aside from research on Izhorian traditional pottery it makes classes for kids and teenagers. Center has Izhorian pottery classes, weaving and knitting classes. Also kids can learn how to create traditional toys and Kukushkoittu clay whistles[9].

Center works with a number of cultural institutions in the region: its exhibitions was hosted in Kingisepp local history museum, Ivangorod Fortress powder storage, in the «Burgher's mansion» and «Lakamunda» centers in Vyborg, Roerich museum institute in Saint Petersburg and others.
