Biography

Early life

Jorge Suarez’s parents were Pablo Suarez Diaz and Esperanza Angeles Mondragon. Pablo Suarez Diaz was a chemical engineer and composer of close to 100 popular songs, and son of MD Manuel Suarez Trujillo, the first Chancellor of the University of Veracruz[23]. Esperanza Angeles Mondragon was a pianist who graduated from a private piano academy. Both parents were interested in having a music career, but the circumstances of the time did not allow that possibility. However, they had frequent home gatherings with friends where Esperanza played some classical piano pieces and sang Pablo’s songs with him at the piano. Jorge has two brothers, concert violinist and conductor Manuel (1943-2003), and Pablo that, although he started playing several instruments from age 5, had a career in informatics.

Education

Jorge started his musical studies at 7 with Dolores Morales, mother of world-renowned pianist and teacher Angelica Morales von Sauer. At age 11, Jorge moved to Philadelphia to study first at The New School of Music with Vladimir Sokoloff, and later, at 15, at Curtis Institute of Music with Eleanor Sokoloff.

After his studies at The Curtis Institute (Philadelphia), Dr. Suarez studied at other prestigious music schools: four years at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory (Moscow, when he was 16-years old), McGill University (Canada, Doctor in Music), University of Southern California (Los Angeles), Institute for Advanced Musical Studies (Switzerland), and the International Ravel Academy (France). His many teachers include Heinrich Neuhaus (teacher of Russian giants, Richter & Gilels), Philippe Entremont, Rosina Lhevinne (teacher of Van Cliburn and many other famous pianists), Daniel Pollack, John Ogdon (1st Prize, Tchaikovsky Competition), Dieter Weber, Ania Dorfmann (a renowned Juilliard School teacher), Lev Naumov, Sergey Dorensky, Asaif Bar-Lev, and Norman Shetler.[22]

From age 12 to 20, during the time of his studies in Philadelphia and Moscow, he spent the summers in Mexico, to give annual solo recitals, concertos with orchestra, and duos with his brother, concert violinist Manuel Suarez. During those periods in Mexico, he studied with Guillermo Salvador.

In 1991 he married pianist Rosemarie Peart. In 1992 he moved to Canada.

Repertoire

Performance at the Hall of the Americas, Organization of American States (OAS)

Besides the traditional repertoire, Jorge Suarez has performed seldom played works[24] such as the Fantasies for piano and orchestra by Debussy and Tchaikovsky, Liszt's Malédiction, Franck's Les Djinns, and many major works by living or recent composers, especially those of the Americas[25][26], giving the premiere of such works as Federico Ibarra's Concerto[27] and Sonatas 2 & 5 (all dedicated to Jorge Suarez); Blas Galindo's Sonata (first recording); Rodolfo Halffter's all last major compositions (the last major one, Secuencia, dedicated to Jorge Suarez) and Concert Overture (first recording); Michael Matthews’ Concerto[28] (dedicated to Jorge Suarez); Eduardo Mata’s Improvisaciones 2 (first recording).

Other Activities

Jorge Suárez has presented at several international events lectures, master classes, and scholarly writings on many musical, artistic and humanistic subjects, most published by prominent institutions. He has adjudicated at several competitions, including the International Competition of Musicology in Cuba[29]. He also founded several musical organizations with other prominent musicians and a school for a holistic development through art (music, plastic arts, and theatre).[30][31][32] He has also written and promoted major musical projects for the general music development of society.

He has been the Dean of the Faculty of Music of the National University of Mexico[8], one of the largest music-education institutions in the world with over 200 teachers and more than 2000 students, and also a professor at various major universities, including Queen’s University and the University of Manitoba in Canada.[33]

Jorge Suarez was awarded the Highest Distinction of the Inter-American Music Council of the Organization of American States, Washington, D.C.

He believes and has promoted, through many projects and presentations, the notion that friendship, understanding, development, and peace can be especially achieved between persons and nations through music.

He believes that all human beings, societies, and countries can and should strive to develop creativity, quality, productivity, and integration of thoughts, feelings, and actions for joy, well-being, and progress, all for sharing and enriching the family, friends, and society.

Reception

D.T.Baker from The Journal, Edmonton regarded Suarez as "...Suarez was remarkably assured [in Barber’s Concerto] - a position he could enjoy due to a most impressive technique. Both the Barber [Concerto] and the Liszt [Spanish Rhapsody] are heroic challenges, and Suarez was fully up to them."
