- Comment: there needs to be significant coverage of Petrou in reliable independent sources, the majority of these sources are primary and merely confirm that she took photographs. Theroadislong (talk) 17:48, 10 March 2024 (UTC)
- Comment: Possibly meets WP:PHOTOGRAPHER but not sure about some of the sources being reliable. Already removed a WP:FORBESCON reference. Will leave to another. CNMall41 (talk) 23:20, 6 March 2024 (UTC)
Soulla Petrou is a British photographer specialising in portraits, music, fashion and beauty.
Early life and education
Born March 1964 in Leeds, United Kingdom, to Greek Cypriot parents, Petrou moved to London in 1983 to obtain a degree in Fashion Design at Middlesex University.[1] She went on to take night classes in photography at Central St. Martin’s College of Art and Design.
Career
Petrou's photography career began with work at fashion labels Monsoon and Puma, alongside work for dance music magazines such as Mixmag, DJ Mag, Touch, Muzik and The Face in the mid 90s. Petrou had the opportunity to take some of the earliest pictures of Geri Halliwell [2] [3], prior to her Spice Girls fame. The shoot took place in 1994 in Battersea, London, when a friend recommended taking photographs of the upcoming star.
Drum & bass artists Goldie[4],[5] General Levy [6] and DJ Rap [7] were among musicians shot for covers and features, alongside others such as Orbital [8] [9], Underworld, [10] Fatboy Slim [11], Giles Peterson, Air, Buju Banton, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, [12] The Chemical Brothers, Judge Jules, Travis, Kathy Sledge from Sister Sledge, Paul Van Dyk[13] and Sasha[14]
In 1997 The Saturday Times newspaper commissioned Petrou to shoot Blur [15] for the inaugural cover of its culture supplement Metro [16] during the band's trip to Sweden to perform at the Stockholm Water Festival. Petrou photographed further covers for Metro featuring Britpop band Kula Shaker, as well as actors Kevin McKidd and Ewen Bremner from Trainspotting. Other artists photographed for Metro include Supergrass[17] and Ian McCulloch of Echo and the Bunnymen.
Continuing into the 2000s, Petrou began photographing girl and boy bands such as Blue, Mis-Teeq, Sum 41, Nick Carter and Lee Ryan for teen magazines like Smash Hits, Bliss, Just Seventeen and Sugar. She photographed classical-music girl band Bond [18] for record company Decca Records, and took on commissions for the NME, including duo Oxide & Neutrino (former So Solid Crew members), Mr. Shabz (also former So Solid Crew) and More Fire Crew.
In addition to Decca, Petrou has worked with record companies EMI, Polydor, Universal and Defected Records. For Defected, she photographed DJs such as “The Godfather of House” Frankie Knuckles, [19]David Morales[20], Satoshi Tomiie[21], and Hector Romero to commemorate the 20th anniversary of DJ agency Def Mix. She photographed Todd Terry and Martin Solveig, also for Defected Records.
Petrou has won several awards, including the Fuji Distinction Award, and a merit in the Fuji Fashion Collective, both in 2002. Petrou won third prize in the International Photographers Awards (IPA) in 2008 for her music portraits.[22] She won silver and bronze prizes at Prix de la Photographie (PX3) in the advertising category for her Ted Baker campaign in 2014.[23] In 2022 she obtained a BIPP Photographer of the Year National Print Competition Award for an image from Siren [24][25], a fashion story in Huf magazine, and in 2023 was a finalist at the Association of Photographers Awards in Fashion & Beauty category. [26]
