SEESHA is the acronym of Samiti for Education, Environment, Social Health and Action.[1][2][3][4] It is a non-governmental, non-profit organisation started in Chennai, the state capital of Tamil Nadu, India.[5][6][7]
Founded in 2003 as a small charitable trust by Indian educationist and humanitarian, Paul Dhinakaran, the organisation has now grown into a welfare and developmental NGO focusing on holistic community development.[8][9] Children receive free tutorial education and medical camps.[10][11] >[12]
They work in some of the poorest communities in both urban and rural India, covering the states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Assam, Uttar Pradesh and the union territories of Delhi and Puducherry.[13][1][4][14]
Approach
SEESHA has a range of projects designed to suit the needs of the populations they serve. Each project includes one or more of the four aspects of development:
Target Populations
SEESHA adopts communities and works with them towards their holistic development.
Projects
Child Development Projects
- Tuition Centres: Over 70 tuition centres across the country, in some of the poorest communities, in order to benefit first-generation learners. The primary goal of these free tuition centres is to equip school-going children with education.
- Educational Scholarships: Orphans and semi-orphans living in conditions of poverty are supported on a monthly basis with scholarships to encourage school going and prevent drop-out.
- Orphanage Support: The needs of children from selected orphanages and Children's Homes are sponsored.
- Skill Training & Value Education Camps: Camps are organised in the target communities for children to explore their interests.
- Talent Hunt: A platform to explore and exhibit the talents and abilities of the children from downtrodden communities.
- CLHIV: Nutritional supplements and educational scholarships given on a monthly basis to children living with HIV in Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu.[19][20][21][12]
