Peter Butt (born 1955) is a significant Australian documentary film maker. He mainly produces documentaries about lesser-known areas of 20th century Australian history.

Documentaries he has made include[1]:

  • No Such a Place
  • My Father, My Country (1988)
  • The Liners (1996-7)
  • Lies, Spies & Olympics (1999)
  • The Battleships (1999)
  • Fortress Australia (2001)
  • Silent Storm (2003) [2]
  • The Airships (2004)

Butt has often produced his works in conjunction with or with funding by Film Australia and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, and has also produced a number of short works under contract to the ABC, including several pieces for the A Big Country series. In 2006 he produced Who Killed Dr Bogle and Mrs Chandler?, a documentary espousing a new theory on the Bogle-Chandler case. Which was Australias most watched documentary which won him an Australian Logie.

Fortress Australia was subject to a complaint to the ABC's Independent Complaints Review Panel. The complaint was rejected although the panel did find that the documentary was not balanced.[3]

Butt has now started on a film with Daniel Montana about the Harold Holt theory showing what happened before and after the dissapearence.
