Would somebody please add the following information to <HEAD> area in the HTML code, as having this page archived does somewhat defeat the purpose of being able to change one's user name.

What you can do in the meantime

The first option (where the namechange is not urgent) is to edit your preferences to change your signature. This will change your "public appearance" on talk pages without requiring costly changes to the database.

  • All your edits will still be attributed to the same user, and although it will be your Username and not your Sig that appears in page histories, most public interaction here goes on via talk pages.
  • If you have the desire and the patience, you can use "What links here" from your User: page to manually edit all your old signatures to use the new sig as well (probably not necessary in most cases).

The second option is to create a new account with the desired name, and redirect your old User: and User Talk: pages to your new account.

  • Put a note at the top of your new User: and User Talk: page to explain the change.
  • This does not merge your contributions history; old edits will still be attributed to the old account, but anyone investigating those edits will be redirected to your new one. If it is really important to you to change the attribution, you can still follow the instructions to add your name to the list below, with the understanding that it may be a long time before a developer is free to attend to this task.
  • Again, if you have the patience, you can use "What links here" from your old User: page to manually edit all your old talk page signatures to display the new sig as well, using a piped link of the form [[User:OldUserName|NewSig]]. Use an informative edit summary so that people do not think you are tampering with someone else's entry on a talk page (a definite community no-no).


The name Wikipedians choose for themselves is not set in stone. On request, Wikipedia developers can change user account settings and article histories such that all previous edits of a given user are attributed to the new name.

Please note that currently this page has a huge backlog, so it may take some time before a request is approved or denied.

Procedure

The procedure for username change requests has changed. Please read the following instructions carefully and follow them exactly: developer time is precious and your request may not be completed if you don't.

  1. Edit this page as the old user. Add a request to the "New requests" section stating the old username and the new username you want. Sign it with ~~~~
  2. Create the new account, i.e. the username you want to change to.
  3. Log in as the new user. Edit the request you just made, to confirm that both accounts are you. Sign it again with ~~~~.
  4. If you are a sysop, please note this fact with your request so that the necessary changes can be made.
  5. Start editing from the new account. Once your request is dealt with, all edits from your old account will be reattributed to your new account.
  6. Be patient. It may take some months before a developer has time to attend to your request.

You will probably want to move and redirect your userpage and talk page after changing.

  • I made a name change request a long time ago, but received no reply. If fulfilling the request ends up losing my user history, that's fine -- I just want to be sure to get my old name back. I would like my username changed from user:Mr. Treesong to just user:Treesong. The username user:Treesong is my old account, but I couldn't log in to it because I switched email addresses and lost my password. If this can't be done, please give me a reply saying so.   • I signed up not realizing that the initial character of my username User:Jolson would be turned into a capital. It therefore didn't turn out like the computer username I wanted it to. I therefore would like to use User:Jonas Olson instead. It would be a good thing having my contributions transferred to a new account name and I think it would be nice to tidy things up by not leaving the old one around but turning it into User:Jonas Olson. Perhaps someone else want to use the old one too. Thank you.
