Introduction

Toru Kumon was born in March 1914 in the province of Kochi Japan. He graduated from the Osaka University of Science with a degree in Maths and taught Maths in his hometown. In 1954 Toru began to teach his son maths using the Kumon method. This involved constant repetition of key maths skills such as calculus.

The Kumon Method

The kumon method is one of the largest maths and language learning system in the world. There are over 3 million children using the Kumon method in over 43 different countries. In North America alone there are 1,400 Kumon centres. The idea behind Kumon is to concentrate on the individual student and let them progress at there own pace. Kumon starts with very basic skills such as addition and subtraction. But this is only the foundation for as Kumon progresses through the 19 levels the maths becomes increasingly challenging. Kumon English focuses in the early stages on reading and world building. Like the maths system Kumon English builds up to summary and interpretation of texts as a more advanced subject.
