Swiss

I'm not clear if he's Italian or Swiss - the stub contradicts itself, the spanish page says Italian. Hopefully somebody who knows more about the topic can clarify Danohuiginn 13:41, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

Hoffman reports that the Wikipedia article on Antonio da Ponte, calls him "a Venetian-born 'Swiss architect&engineer ... whose earlier works are entirely unknown" which he compares with Du Ponte's description in "the authoritative Giulio Lorenzetti in his Venice and its Lagoon as born in Venice and employed there in various important capacities throughout his career, such as head architect of the rebuilding of the Ducal Palace..." of the Rialto Bridge he "is said to have 'built (but only part designed it)... between 1588 and 1591'. There's no mention of Switzerland" Hoffman finishes the piece with "Can we be dealing here with one of those Wikipedia mistakes that become common currency through the omnipresence of the worldwide web?"

It appears that the Swiss information was incorporated in this edit. Although I am not familiar with this area, I found that the Britannica Online article on Switzerland ([1], section: Cultural life: The arts and sciences: Architecture) explicitly mentions Antonio da Ponte in the context of Renaissance architects who practiced in Italy. Incidentally, the IP changed the articles of two other individuals to include Swiss mention ([2]); as it turns out, these two individuals are also mentioned in the same section of Britannica's Switzerland article. The Swiss mentions in the other two articles persist in current versions. I'm not quite sure what to make of this, but it seems to warrant further investigation.--GregRM 00:47, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

"During the Renaissance many architectural masters, especially from Ticino, practiced their craft in Italy: Antonio da Ponte built the prisons near the Doge's Palace and the Rialto Bridge in Venice; Antonio Contino built Venice's Bridge of Sighs; Domenico Fontana designed the whole of the Lateran Palace, the facade of St. John Lateran Church, and the Royal Palace in Naples;"

Carlo Maderno and Domenico Fontana seem to have been born in border regions that changed hands several times and of course Italy did not exist as a state at that time.... It seems that Britannica is confused: if Antonio da Ponte was born in Venice then I guess that makes him Italian. (Britannica: Q:When and where was Antonio da Ponte born? ALSO: looking at Britannica: Antonio-da-Ponte it seems that this page was in copyright violation until my edits[3]. I think that the sections that I have marked "citation needed" should be checked to see if they too are copyright violations of Britannica article and removed if they are. --Philip Baird Shearer 14:31, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
