Named after former mayor Charles W. Flanagan, Charles W. Flanagan High School opened its doors in 1996 as the first public high school in Pembroke Pines, Florida. Flanagan High School is located near Broward County's C.B. Smith Park and the Walter C. Young Middle School and Resource Center.

While it was, at one time, the largest public high school in Broward County and one of the largest in the country [citation needed], Flanagan’s enrollment is now just over 3000. It operates on a block schedule with 4 periods in a day per semester. Under the leadership of its current principal Dr. Sharon Shaulis, Flanagan High School was featured the "Top 1000 high schools in the nation" by NEWSWEEK magazine (2005), based on such statistics as Advanced Placement enrollment.[citation needed]

Football team involved in brawl

The Flanagan High School varisty football team was involved in a bench-clearing brawl during an away game against Miramar High School on September 28, 2007. The main participants were the Miramar offense and Flanagan defense teams which were on the field at the beginning of the melee, which took place during the third quarter. Due to the large number of players involved in the brawl, the game was cancelled. But the game was rescheduled with most of Flanagans defensive JV playing, and most of Miramars offensive JV playing.[7]

The Florida High School Athletic Association suspended 28 Flanagan players and 26 Miramar players for playing from one to six weeks. In addition, both schools were fined by the state (Flanagan, $6,800; Miramar $5,350) and neither school may participate in the 2008 spring jamboree and 2008 fall preseason jamboree.[8]

Flanagan's athletic program has been put on administrative probation until the end of the 2009 school year. Any additional violations during this period could result in more penalties, including being expelled from the FHSAA.[8]
