Martin Paterson (born 10 May1987 in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire) is an Northern Ireland footballer, currently a striker at Scunthorpe United. He was on loan at Grimsby Town during the 2006-2007 season and has played at international level for Northern Ireland's U21 side.

Career

Paterson made his début for Stoke as a late substitute for Chris Greenacre in the 2-0 win over Plymouth Argyle on 16 April2005. His first start came in March 2006 against Leeds United and he hit his first goal six months later, against Sheffield Wednesday. He made a total of 12 league appearances (two starts) before moving to Grimsby on loan in November 2006, initially for a month.

On loan at Grimsby in League Two, he scored on his club début — 25 November2006 against Accrington Stanley. Grimsby extended his loan stay for an extra two months. In February 2007, Paterson returned to parent club Stoke City after serving the maximum stay at Grimsby.

In the summer of 2007, Paterson was signed by Scunthorpe United manager Nigel Adkins as a replacement for the departed Billy Sharp.[1]

He scored on his full début for Scunthorpe, putting the side 1-0 up before they lost 2-1 to League One side Hartlepool United in the League Cup.

On 2nd November 2007, Paterson's record of 7 goals in 11 starts saw him get a first call-up to the senior Northern Ireland squad for the matches against Denmark and Spain.[2]

Football FanCast

In 2007, podcast website Football FanCast began a 'Martin Paterson Update of the Week' on their Championship show. The update follows Paterson's progress and form for Scunthorpe from week to week after the show's presenters had seen him in action for Stoke's reserve team. [3]
