Brave is the fifth English-language studio album recorded by American singer Jennifer Lopez, released by Epic Records on October 6, 2007 in Australia, October 9, 2007 in North America, and October 15, 2007 (see 2007 in music) in Europe. It reached number 12 on the U.S. Billboard 200 on the first week of release, with 53,000 copies sold, making it her first album to not debut in the top 10 on particular chart, even including her all Spanish album Como Ama una Mujer, which was released earlier in 2007.[2] As of December 2007, it has become her lowest selling album selling only 513,850 copies worldwide.
History
Production
In a MTV News interview while on the music video set for "Me Haces Falta", Lopez promised fans "danceable music" on this album. This album returned Lopez to pop, R&B, and hip hop sound since her previous english language studio album Rebirth.[3] She stated the album is "dance, funk, R&B, hip-hop, all that stuff, all mixed up together to make some great pop music".[3] She described Brave as "a little Jamiroquai, a little Sade. It's real feel-good music".[4] Lopez recurited producers such as J. R. Rotem, Bloodshy & Avant, Midi Mafia and Ryan Tedder.[4][5] On March 27, 2007, on Total Request Live, Lopez stated there are no featured appearances and chose between four uptempo songs for the first single. The first single chosen was "Do It Well." Lopez played a track in Las Vegas in late April and stated she is going on her first tour with a mix of English and Spanish music.
On August 26, 2007, ABC premiered a promo for the fourth season of Desperate Housewives, featuring a snippet of the song "Mile In These Shoes.".
Chart performance
The first week's sales of Brave were very relatively low at 53,000, when compared to her other English-language albums which would usually debut with sales in the high 200,000s in the U.S. and 300,000-400,000 worldwide. The album sold more than 101,000 internationally, including the U.S. sales, which was very disappointing for Epic Records, following their investment in the album's promotion and release, though the promotion was far less than what was given to any other album of Jennifer's.
