Stanley Ann Dunham (November 29, 1942 - November 7, 1995), known as Ann Dunham, [1] was the mother of Barack Obama. She was born in Wichita, Kansas, to Stanley and Madelyn Dunham. Her father was an itinerant furniture salesman in downtown Seattle, Washington, and her mother worked for a bank. Her family moved to Mercer Island, Washington, in 1956 so that 13-year old Ann could attend the high school that had just opened.[2]

Dunham moved to Hawaii to attend the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where she studied anthropology. There, she met and fell in love with Barack Obama, Sr. from Kenya. Both sets of parents opposed the marriage; however, they married in 1960. [2]

Dunham is described by her friends as "a fellow traveler... We were liberals before we knew what liberals were" and as "the original feminist". [2]

In an interview, Barack Obama referred to his mother as "the dominant figure in my formative years... The values she taught me continue to be my touchstone when it comes to how I go about the world of politics."[2]

Ann Dunham and Barack Obama Sr. divorced in 1965, when he went to Harvard to continue his education. The senior Obama, after finishing his PhD in economics at Harvard, returned to Kenya where he obtained a position in the Kenyan government. He was killed in an automobile accident in 1982.[3]

Two years later when her son was five, Dunham married Lolo Soetoro, an Indonesian oil manager, and moved to Jakarta, Indonesia [4]. Barack's half-sister, Maya Soetoro was born in Indonesia. Four years later he was sent back to the United States to live with his maternal grandparents. Dunham and Soetoro were divorced in the late 1970s.[5]

Dunham loved to travel around the world, pursuing a career in rural development that took her to Ghana, India, Thailand, Indonesia, Nepal and Bangladesh.[citation needed] In 1992 she earned a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Hawai'i. Her dissertation, "Peasant blacksmithing in Indonesia: Surviving and Thriving Against All Odds," was 1067 pages long. [6] Dunham died in 1995 of ovarian cancer. In an ad, Obama says that his mother spent her final months "more worried about paying her medical bills than getting well."[7]
