Seeding

I can seed the torrents from several dedicated servers 24/7 with a 100mbit connection... If anybody would be so kind to tell me where I can get all the Wikipedia torrents? Sorry for posting anonoymous, but I cannot login here at the moment. I will sign with my own username here later. Meeting

Does anyone feel the need to have a meeting about this project through irc. I wouldn't mind talking for a meeting, err typing. I thought we could use the wikipedia 1.0 channel. Its on the Version 1.0 editorial team. I'm there right now, until they kick me off. I am 'nominaladversary' Nominaladversary 04:32, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That's at Channel: #wikipedia-1.0. Walkerma 06:27, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Version 0.5 update

Just thought I'd keep you abreast of developments at Wikipedia:Version 0.5. Linterweb, a French company, is planning to release 2000-10000 CDs during January. It was delayed a little in order to hire a developer, but he has now started work. The CD will include a search engine and a set of navigational pages (some of these are ready). I believe everything (including the software) will be available for the free download under GFDL. Will you be able to set up for a January release via the BitTorrent network? Thanks, and Happy New Year, Walkerma 05:17, 2 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

ER, the software will be GFDL? Was that a mis-statement on your part or are they really going to release software under a license written specifically for software documentation? — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 19:40, 2 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, that's probably my mistake (I don't really follow the copyright laws very well), but my understanding is that the software can be freely included with the distribution. I'll check up on the details. Walkerma 06:04, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, just making sure. GPL is probably the appropriate license for the software itself. — User:ACupOfCoffee@ 16:13, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it's GPL, I confirmed it. Walkerma 19:58, 4 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Linterweb isn't going to bundle anything are they?
Sorry, for not answering your inquiries, yes we can get started on the 0.5 release right away. And thank you for the update as well as the good news of the CD release.Nominaladversary 23:25, 8 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The release is being held up at the moment (things beyond our control), but we are getting closer to publication. We will be able to include the reader in with the download, as far as I understand - that was a big reason for working with a small French software company. I'd guess now at a February CD release (with downloading available shortly afterwards), but I can't be sure. I'll let people here know as soon as we are ready. Walkerma 04:36, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The release is tentatively scheduled for March 26. I'll try to keep you posted with download information. Walkerma 06:32, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(unindent)I'm still very ichy to get a torrent going for it ASAP or exactly on the date (now April 3rd?) so that if the site gets slammed by digg or something it'll still have a solid download link. while leeching/seeding is not new to me, actually establishing a torrent is; is this ready to go or is there anyway i can help? JoeSmack Talk 20:16, 30 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Contact User:Kelson - he is organising the start of seeding, I believe. He understands English well. He did the image files, dumps and cleanup of Version 0.5 for us, and I think may even have a server he is getting ready for Torrent. You're right, it is most likely Tuesday, April 3rd before we can start. Thanks, Walkerma 03:26, 31 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
(his reply from here). Hi Joe, Linterweb will provide the v0.5 iso over HTTP or FTP, and searchs good mirrors over the world to enforce the network architecture. So you will be free to download the iso just after the release... for this reason I think it will be easy for you to start to share it quickly over BT. Best regards. Kelson 31 mars 2007 à 21:10 (CEST)
It looks like it will be up to us to set up a torrent. JoeSmack Talk 17:38, 1 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well then lets get started, trackers? Nominaladversary 23:05, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Here we go, download links. I'm thinking mininova for the seed? Lots of options though. JoeSmack Talk 20:21, 6 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well, we'll need to update the front page, but first lets make the subpage with all of the info, and check up on the torrent. I'm downloading the files, and will make multiple torrents to see which trackers work. If you guys have any torrents that are perfect, post them.Nominaladversary 00:44, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
First attempt, 1 tracker (bz2 and the non compressed iso I'll try to leave azureus on all night. Nominaladversary 02:44, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
First attempt update: Well, we have about 2-3 different uploaders and about 9 different leechers. Both torrents are working at my end. Both torrents are at thepiratebay as well. here and here. If anyone has an ED2K client, he/she is already providing support for the release on the ed2k network. Albeit all intentions are good, the BitTorrent side of the release is more important. If you have both types of clients open, well even better. Nominaladversary 13:16, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I believe User:X1987x uploaded the other torrent slightly earlier. The date on it is a month in advance (on accident), but it has seeds. There is a little more info on my and his talk page, but im a little more for the one with better info. I'll try seeding both until we decide what to do. JoeSmack Talk 04:32, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
For info, just add a comment on the corresponding page at TPB. I don't know what to do yet, there isn't a serious demand for any of the projects, although I'm sure the 2007 release will. I'm having problems connecting to mldonkey using Azureus. When I use BitTorrent nothing even happens. But I can connect to uTorrent, Azurues, mainline, and bitlord fine. Nominaladversary 21:14, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

When 0.5 gets released

Will the members of this project get notified before the torrent is made public so we have time to download the CD before everyone else, or will we just join the swarm and hope for the best? I think we should get notified, because that should increase the download speed for everyone.

A possible way to do this would be to create a torrent which is made available to us, but not any major torrent indexes. After we've all downloaded the files, we can submit the torrent to the index sites. Ultra-Loser [ T ] [ C ] 04:58, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

eMule Notes

It just occurred to me that eMule distribution could actually come to a standstill even if 20 people were uploading a wikipedia file. I don't know where this would go, and I'm positive distribution over the ED2K network will never stop for us, but there is a situation. In eMule, you can be firewalled, or some random NAT problem--which usually stems from having a router. IF every person were to have this problem, who wanted a wikipedia file, no one would ever connect to anyone for the file. Note: This is just for eMule.

Let me explain, when you're firewalled in a Bit torrent client, your downloads will be slower than someone's who isn't firewalled, but you will still receive files. On the ED2K network, if you're firewalled, you are given a "Low ID" status, and if you're not, you're given a "High ID". Now here is the problem: Low ID's can not connect to other Low ID's, only to High ID's. High ID's can connect to whomever they want to. Now with eMule, there are two networks you are connected to, the KAD network and the ED2K. Here is when you are Firewalled for the KAD network, when this happens, the globe at the bottom right will have a yellow arrow corresponding to the KAD network and the connection info will tell you that you are firewalled. Now, with the ED2K network, when you are firewalled, you will be labeled "Low ID" and firewalled, and the globe arrow which corresponds to the ED2K network will be yellow. When you are downloading, the uploader you are downloading from will see a (Low ID) status next to your wait time. IF you are a High ID person, then there will be no status. Finally, when you are High ID and not firewalled/have a NAT problem, then the yellow arrows will become Blu-ish/Green-ish. Even if you're firewalled, it will still say you're connected next to the globe--because you are. Here is a perfect situation.

Sorry for the image quality, google doesn't like png so it converts them to a terrible jpg compressed picture. Nominaladversary 22:49, 29 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Questions? I might need to explain again.

Status

I'm guessing this is how the torrent project will be. We have seeders for the files on the BitTorrent side and Uploaders on the ED2K side. We're dormant and running...until a situation arises, which hopefully won't happen until the next release. Everyone who uploads/seeds uses plenty of bandwith up, so thanks for that. Nominaladversary 02:39, 22 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Update - the BitTorrent Inc. site doesn't seem to have our torrent any more, all off Trapper's stuff isn't there...which site should we make the main torrent download? Nominaladversary 03:18, 31 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Release Version 0.5

Update - the official free download is available here. You can also buy a copy for around US$15! Walkerma 20:38, 6 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
ThePirateBay has a new tracker -- they don't want torrents with their current listed tracker. Here is the new one: http://vip.tracker.thepiratebay.org/announce Nominaladversary 02:35, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Additional info added. Nominaladversary 15:48, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
New sub-project page made. Here, or just check on the front torrent page.

wpcd 1.0

Does anyone even download the CD using a torrent? I don't even think the tracker for the torrent works. Nominaladversary 19:45, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'd say there is about 20 sources on emule, but no idea how much each of those sources have. Nominaladversary 21:34, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think we should stop Torrent support for this, it is extremely outdated, the torrent has a number of problems with it, and I don't think anyone wants it. Also, there is an update to this CD. Nominaladversary 17:03, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

2007 Wikipedia selection

Two versions available: 4G with full size images, 1G with only the thumbnails. Browsable at http://schools-wikipedia.org Generally it is tons better than the last one. Please could someone tell me where to upload the files so you can torrent them? We've only got 500G bandwidth on our website so probably will only offer the 1G one. --BozMo talk 10:01, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dropped a note on your talk page. Nominaladversary 20:02, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
A quick request - please make sure that when naming and documenting this, you make it clear that this is a different release from Version 0.5. I can see people getting them mixed up, especially since they came out only about six weeks apart. This looks like a nice release! Walkerma 02:17, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, and there are a number of things we can do help clarify the release. On each torrent dumpsite, where one would get the torrent, we can include the description of the 2007 Wikipedia Selection, and show the difference between the 0.5 version; put a comment on the torrent file itself; and perhaps the most useful, include a short .txt file along with the release file. Also on any news site, digg, slashdot, etc. there should be an appropriate description as well. Nominaladversary 17:11, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
FYI, the key differences are (a) 2007 Selection contains virtually all of V0.5, plus many more (~2500?) articles not in V0.5, (b) it has been screened to be kid-friendly and (c) it does not include the Kiwix search engine. Walkerma 17:23, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for that, we'll be sure to include those in our description. Nominaladversary 20:37, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
For the 2007 Wikipedia Selection torrent page, this is what we're looking at. Please make changes as necessary. Also we need to provide the right info at each torrent dump site that the torrent is uploaded to.

We need people to seed this! I don't how we're gonna go about the file. In my opinion the best way to get seeders, is for everyone to download the file separately from the main server, rather then using the torrent that is up. Then after the file has been downloaded, download the torrent to help seed. Nominaladversary 20:50, 30 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Volunteer

This lazy wikipedean volunteers his efforts. If there is a better page to list your interest, let me know. Mathiastck 06:35, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

no one else responded to this so I'm going to say, What? Nominaladversary 21:39, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Our Very Own Tracker

I have acquired a tracker for all of our projects using torrents. The tracker, has 99& guarantee uptime and we will use it for all future torrents, including the torrent release of the 2007 Wikipedia CD Release. Of course, every torrent has to be registered so we don't have random people abusing the tracker--which is the reason why I am not posting the announce URL here. Many thanks to my friend who set it up for me. Nominaladversary 17:28, 26 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Kick ass! Is it reliable/stable/etc for our purposes - can it handle a slashdotting? JoeSmack Talk 17:31, 26 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Haha, we will be good even if there are over 10000 seeders and leechers. We tested the wpcd 0.5.bz2 and that worked great. It'll handle pretty much anything. Nominaladversary 17:44, 26 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tracker dead

For me, the BT tracker for "2007 Wikipedia CD Selection" is dead... my mirroring stopped in the middle of the file. :( Kelson 17:11, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm still uploading...try updating the tracker manually or restarting your client. JoeSmack Talk 17:16, 15 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
99.9% up time...just unlucky I guess. It's a tracker nothing we can do if it decides to fall asleep once in a while. It's never gone out for me though. Nominaladversary 03:30, 17 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thx, it seems to work fine now. I was simply downloading the 2006 zip :(... sorry. Kelson 10:49, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My torrent client is currently reporting "No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it" for http://wp.cyllene.org:7397/announce (the SOS 2007 Wikipedia Selection torrent). DuncanHarris 13:40, 4 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah there are some problems with it right now. It is an odd situation, we might switch back to TPB's tracker. Nominaladversary 00:27, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Still dead, any updates on this or shall we switch back to TPB?  robertvan1  talk  14:05, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Statistics

Well, not really, but there isn't any word to say what it exactly is. This page tells you how many seeders/leechers we have as well as how many completely downloads of the file have been achieved. If we had two torrents, I think it will show individual torrent statistics. Nominaladversary 23:35, 19 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not entirely sure if anyone's aware of this, but the toolserver has a bittorrent tracker for Wikimedia-related content. Shadow1 (talk) 00:33, 1 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oh. I'll look into that, it'll be easier using the toolserver's bittorrent tracker than the one we use. Thanks! Nominaladversary 19:02, 14 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tracker dead

On Piratebay : http://thepiratebay.org/tor/3658466/Wikipedia_Release_Version_0.5 ... is that normal ? Kelson 10:54, 3 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's an older torrent, we use TPB's tracker for it. We might go back to that tracker for future use. Nominaladversary 00:29, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
