Manish is a common Hindu name, derived from a Sanskrit word - Manishi meaning "A genius or an intellectual".

This is contrary to the popular belief that the name "Manish" is composed of two words "man" which means Heart and "ish" which means God. Probably this belief arises from the fact that many Indian names that end with "ish" actually refer to God[citation needed]. The popularly ascribed, but actually inaccurate meaning of the name Manish is "God of Heart". One can also read Manish as Mani+esh meaning "lord of gems"

Many Indian male children are given this name. It is a popular name in central and northern parts of India.
