Hangama (Persian: هنگامه) is a popular singer of Tajik ethnicity. She currently lives an exile in Canada where from she continues her music career. Before her emigration from Afghanistan in the early 80s, she was counted as one of the most popular female singers in that country. Besides Afghanistan, she is also known in Tajikistan and Iran where she has a fan base.

Background

Little is known of Hangama's early years. However, she emerged with Ahmad Wali as a very popular musical duo who became the unrivaled singer-couple in early 80s. Their first few songs recorded in Afghanistan and the accompanying videos became immensely popular and those songs remain classics of the Afghan music archives.

Emigration

When Hangama and her family left Afghanistan is unclear; however, sources place it in the early-to-mid 80s-at the height of her popularity. She ended up in Germany where she completely withdrew into seclusion. After her immigration to Germany, she and Ahmad Wali were engaged and soon after married. Why this romance didn't spark in Afghanistan is an issue of speculation.

Canada

In 1995, after being divorced from Ahmad Wali, Hangama moved to Canada. She has since remarried. It is not clear why she and Ahmad Wali separated. She has a son, named Masih, from her first marriage to Ahmad Wali and a daughter named Sara from her present marriage.

Concerts

In 2005, Hangama returned to Afghanistan for a round of concerts in Kabul. Reportedly she was applauded for her contribution to the Afghan music over the past 20 years.
