Untitled

Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II will be the fourth solo album from Wu-Tang Clan rap artist Raekwon. It will serve as a sequel to his 1995 album, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx....

Background

The album was named the "#6 most anticipated album of 2007" by XXL Magazine, but would be pushed back numerous times and a release date has not set as of yet.[1]

The album is to be released as a joint venture between Wu-Tang and Dr. Dre's Aftermath Entertainment, though Raekwon has recently been searching for new distribution. Producers are set to include RZA, Dr. Dre, J Dilla, Erick Sermon, Allah Mathematics, and DJ Scratch.[2]

In an interview with HipHopDX.com, Raekwon commented on the upcoming album, he said:

It’s damn near 200% done. I wanna drop it on a major, but you’re definitely gonna get it by the summer of next year. By hook or crook. If I gotta do it independent, I gotta release it. I did a lot of hard work on this record and I refuse to throw it out and people be like, Yo Rae, I ain’t know your shit was out. Nah, I can’t afford for that to happen no more. That happened to me on The Lex Diamond Story. That happened to me on Immobilarity. I’m not going for it on this one. I’m not letting the industry control my destiny on this record. People been wanting this record for the last 10 years, so I gotta make sure that this shit is bulletproof.[3]

Music

Concept

Similar to the first Cuban Linx album, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II will be set up in cinematic fashion, tying each song together in a sort of storyline, and each rapper playing an implied 'persona' of sorts; for instance, Raekwon is the main protagonist, with GZA and Inspectah Deck playing 'supporting roles' throughout. Other guests will also take Gambino personas as well.[4] In a Scratch Magazine article, they confirmed these tracks which were all produced by the RZA, "Thug World", "Rock Stars & Smoking Barrels", "State Of Grace", "Kareem Khan" & "No Matter How Hard You Try". Wu-Tang's DJ Allah Mathematics confirmed on his Myspace he will have song called "Mean Streets" featuring GZA & Inspectah Deck on the album.

Production and recording

It was announced on the Wu-Tang Corp. website that Raekwon's management has stated that the album is almost complete[5], and that production is largely credited to Dr. Dre and RZA, with RZA and Busta Rhymes being named executive producers.[6][5] RZA explained the collaboration between himself and Dr. Dre like "ying and yang" when it comes to their styles.[7] "The album is gonna attract all the gangstas, nigga; all the thugs and everybody is going to be listening to this shit," says RZA of the album. Raekwon stated on the Rock The Bells Tour that Cuban Linx 2 will definitely be out Summer 2008.[8] One Theory is that the release date will be the exact 12-year anniversary[citation needed], which would be August 1, but it didn't happen as it wasn't released then. Some tracks are the result of several Los Angeles studio sessions originally aimed at creating a new Clan album.
