Fat Kwong Street in Ho Man Tin

Ho Man Tin (Chinese: 何文田) or Ho Mun Tin is a mostly residential area in Kowloon, Hong Kong, part of the Kowloon City District.

History

The area of Ho Man Tin was quite different from the present-day context. The proper Ho Man Tin was considered as the heart of the present-day Mong Kok. With cultivated lands, it was bounded north by Argyle Street, west by Coronation Road (present-day Nathan Road), and east by the hills. To its southeast is Fo Pang and north Mong Kok. Stream from the hills east offered water from cultivation. The last Chinese character tin (田, field) reflects the cultivation. The "Ho" (何) and "Man" (文) are both Chinese surnames which Ho Man Tin represents the agricultural land owned by the "Ho" and "Man" families. They were the major families who took their residance around the area.

In the 1950s and 1960s, hills near Ho Man Tin became a resettlement area full of refugees from China. When the hilly east built Ho Man Tin Estate, the area became present-day Ho Man Tin.

It is close to Argyle Street and Kowloon Hospital. The area was within the district of the Kowloon City police station.
