Revision as of 22:40, 7 August 2008

Before you leave a message about this bot leaving a template on your talk page:
  • If you were attempting to rename an article or create a disambiguation page: Compliance with the GFDL requires that the article be actually moved rather than copied with cut-and-paste to preserve editing history. Please tag the new copy with {{db-move}} and an administrator will be able to assist you.
  • If the original source was itself a copy of Wikipedia text: Reusing the text is probably okay, but make sure you link back to the original article to comply with the GFDL. If the site CSBot found is a Wikipedia mirror, you may want to notify the bot maintainer so he can add it to the list for the future.
  • If the original source is in the public domain: Reusing the text is okay, but you almost certainly want to attribute it with an appropriate template (such as {{DANFS}} or {{1911}}); this will cause CSBot to leave the article alone.
If you did attribute it with an appropriate template, but it was still flagged as a copyvio, then it's probable the bot does not know the template you have used. You might want to tell the bot maintainer so he can add it to the list.

Otherwise, remember that text found on other web pages is copyrighted by default. Unless there is an explicit permission on the page (or site) allowing reuse without conditions (or under the GFDL) you can not use that text in a Wikipedia article!

Thank you!

Hello, CorenSearchBot tagged a stub I started (see above title), saying that it has detected possible copying of copywrited material. The material in question is literally ONE sentence. I could not find the matching sentence in the article linked by the Bot. Since molecular biology terminology is very precise and specific it is likely that a similar sentence exists, however, similarities of this kind would likely be found in the introduction to any article on DCrk. I have tried removing the tag on the edit history page unsuccessfully. I'd be grateful if it could be removed by someone with the ability/authority to do so

Many thanks User:George Damoulakis (talk) 1st August 2008 —Preceding undated comment was added at 08:48, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I checked that website and don't find any sentences matching between my write-up and the content on there. Thanks Rorkadian (talk) 12:05, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bot exclusion list

Coren,

I was wondering if the bot has a list of Wikipedia mirrors to avoid false-positives? If so, would it be possible to add http://www.prescriptiondrug-info.com/ to this, as I've come across a number of these through WP:SCV? Apologies if I've missed reference to this somewhere in the documentation. Thanks, --Kateshortforbob 21:38, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it does. User:CorenSearchBot/exclude. It uses regular expressions, however, so if you're not familiar with them it would be best if you simply told me which sites you wish to exclude. It's fairly easy to understand for the most part, though, so you can probably manage. — Coren (talk) 03:27, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a way to suggest pages to the bot?

Many times I see pages that feel like they were clearly written someplace else and just cut and paste (seeing smart quotes, or an "about us" POV) but I don't necessarily have the resources to find it and show the connection. Is there (could there be?) a way to "report" a page to the CSB if we think it is worth a check by CSB? KevinCuddeback (talk) 18:52, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know the answer to your question, but you could flag it for attention of a human editor by putting {{cv-unsure|~~~}} on the article's talk page. 69.140.152.55 (talk) 02:41, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There is. You can add a wikilink to User:CorenSearchBot/manual, and the bot will shortly take a look at the page and post the result there. — Coren (talk) 03:27, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Flag as patrolled?

Hi,

Perhaps the bot should flag pages it tags as patrolled. If they're going to be looked at as a result of the tag, there's no point in new page patrollers checking them. --  Chzz  ►  22:05, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That's an interesting question. I'm not sure it would be wise, since CSBot wouldn't bother with a pageful of goatse— all it knows how to do is check for obvious cut and paste. — Coren (talk) 03:27, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Query

I need help renaming about 200 articles. Doing this by hand would take me all day.

Can your bot rename articles, or be adapted to do so?

If so, please contact me.

Thank you.

It's not build to do, but there are a number of bot operators who have bots who can; you might want to ask at WP:BOTREQ. — Coren (talk) 03:27, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Whitelist a source please

Hi. Your bot tagged as copyvio some text taken from http://www.baseball-reference.com. This website publishes its contents under the GFDL. Please whitelist this website. - Richard Cavell (talk) 07:44, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wikivotr

If you have a stop list of Wikipedia clones, you could add wikivotr.com to it. The alleged copyvio reported here was probably reporting the article itself! — RHaworth (Talk | contribs) 04:46, 20 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

http://www.jgames.co.uk is another Wikipedia mirror.

CorenSearchBot made this edit: "it appears to include a substantial copy of: http://www.jgames.co.uk/title/Japanese_dialects

In fact, http://www.jgames.co.uk is a mirror of Wikipedia. Articles beginning with http://www.jgames.co.uk/title/ correspond to Wikipedia articles beginning with http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ -- Eastmain (talk) 02:29, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

This entry is published under the terms of the GFDL and it complies with rules and guidelines. Do you want me to add anything so it's not deleted ? Thanx. jm —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jmlederman (talkcontribs) 12:47, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

edit summaries for Wikipedia copies

The bot distinguishes between a copy of a non-wikipedia article and a wikipedia article. Therefore, I find it funny that the bot doesn't have a correct edit summary for Wikipedia articles. The edit summary for copied Wikipedia articles "Tagging possible copyvio..........." is the same edit summary as non-Wikipedia copied articles. See link. --brewcrewer (yada, yada) 03:24, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That's because the primary problems with cut-and-paste moves (which is the most common reason why that gets triggered) is a copyright violation (copy permissions are granted through the GFDL, which a cut-and-paste usually violates). — Coren (talk) 12:35, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
