The following is a list of characters from the manga and anime series YuYu Hakusho.

The names are listed in Western order, with the family name after the given name.

Main characters

The following are the series' main characters. In the series, five of the main characters, Yusuke Urameshi, Kazuma Kuwabara, Kurama, Hiei, and Genkai, forms a team in the Dark Tournament called Team Urameshi.

Yusuke Urameshi

Yusuke Urameshi (浦飯幽助, Urameshi Yūsuke) is known to be a stereotypical bad seed; having a spotty attendance record, doing poorly in class, and picking fights with many other students. He dies after saving a small child from being struck by a car, which is something the guardians of the afterlife did not predict. Koenma allows Botan to guide Yusuke and allows him to come back to life after completing an ordeal to show that he is truly a good person. He is then forced to become a Spirit Detective who protects the human race from demons. He is voiced by Nozomu Sasaki in Japanese media and Justin Cook in the English dub. Rik Nagel voices the character in YuYu Hakusho, The Movie: Poltergeist Report.

Yusuke's most common attack is the Spirit Gun (霊丸, Reigan, lit. Spirit Sphere), spirit energy concentrated into his right index finger and released it as a projectile. He develops variations as he develops and strengthens it. He is a Mazoku, or a descendant of the Amazaku demons. Raizen made it so that when the stars reach a certain alignment, and his descendant is worthy of awakening, they would transform.

Keiko Yukimura

Keiko Yukimura (雪村 螢子, Yukimura Keiko) is a top student with a personality opposite that of childhood friend Yusuke, the two also being closer than either like to admit. Keiko's parents run a ramen restaurant named Yukimura Diner (雪村食堂 Yukimura Shokudō). After Yusuke is killed in a car accident, he is permitted another chance to live should someone, who ends up being Keiko, kiss his corpse. Yusuke tries not to involve her with his spirit detective escapades, though multiple interferences from demons prevent this. After being told an almost unbelievable lie by Botan, Keiko learns the truth when she goes with Botan, Yukina, and Shizuru to the Dark Tournament, and continues supporting Yusuke in his further adventures. Towards the end of the series, Yusuke proposes to Keiko, telling her that no matter where life takes them, they will always be together in each others' hearts, even after having to wait three years for him to return to her.

Keiko, born on January 31, is 14 years old at the beginning of the story. Her blood type is A. (see Blood types in Japanese culture) Cooking and cleaning are her hobbies.[2]

Kazuma Kuwabara

Kazuma Kuwabara (桑原和真, Kuwabara Kazuma) is the second toughest student in Sarayashiki Junior High School and is always trying to usurp Yusuke Urameshi's position as the toughest. He develops feelings for the ice apparition, Yukina, though it is troublesome for him after learning that she is Hiei's sister, as he gets along very poorly with Hiei. He is voiced by Shigeru Chiba in Japanese media and Christopher Sabat in the Funimation dub. Lex Lang provides the character's voice in the Media Blasters dub, Cliff Lazenby in the US Manga Corps dub, and Russell Wait in the Animax dub.

He has a very high Spirit Awareness for a human, allowing him to sense Yusuke after his death. He develops the ability to create a Spirit Sword (霊剣, Rei Ken, Aura Sword in the Viz translation) out of his own spirit energy. He originally needs a physical base to channel it through, but he eventually trains it to the point where he can create it out of pure energy, elongate it at will, and create two at the same time. He later develops the Dimension Sword (次元刀, Jigen Tō, lit. Dimensional Blade), which allows him to slice through dimensional walls and open portals to other areas.

Botan

Botan (ぼたん) is the happy and perky, and sometimes ditsy guide to the underworld. Botan has blue hair in a ponytail, wears a bright pink kimono, and flies sidesaddle on an oar. These particulars derive from Chinese and Japanese mythology. Blue (usually as a skin color, but also as an eye color) was associated with the land of the dead, which was also supposed to be the reverse of the land of the living: her kimono is fastened in reverse, right over left; and girls, not strong-armed boatmen like Charon, rowed lost souls across the Sanzu River. Botan works hard, cares deeply for others, and tries not to let her friends know when she's down. Botan is not a fighter like those around her, but possesses heightened spirit awareness and spiritual energy. If fighting, she usually uses blunt weapons, like her oar or a metal bat. Botan can use any of Yusuke's detective items while in human form, as she once considered blowing up the walls with the Spirit Ring when she and Keiko were being pursued by the Makai Insect-possessed humans. Botan also possesses healing powers and the ability to create peripheral barriers.

Koenma

King Enma Jr., usually addressed as Koenma (コエンマ, "little Enma"), a combination of Ko (meaning child) and his father's name, is the son of spirit realm ruler Enma, and the one who takes responsibility of his father's work when he's away. Koenma overthrows his father when it's discovered that Enma deliberately allows demons to cause chaos in the human world. Koenma usually appears as a toddler with a pacifier in his mouth, though he's at least 700 years old. This pacifier is Koenma's trademark wherein it is where his powers are stored. The pacifier gathers his pure Reiki and can be used as a powerful seal to capture dangerous and strong Youkai. This seal is called "Evil Sealing Ring" or the "Mafuukan". Koenma's main abilities are based around this pacifier, which holds spirit energy used for barriers, sealings, and bringing life back to corpses. The closest person to him should be George (A blue ogre), who is his servant, but he isn't always nice to George. Koenma tends to take his frustration out on him. Koenma has wisdom of the universe and its history, and will help however he can, though at times he's cowardly and a typical comic relief character. He can transform himself into his adult form of a bishōnen, yet has claimed during the Yokai tournaments that he prefers maneuvering in his baby form.

Kurama

  • Filipino name: "Dennis"
  • Seiyu: Ogata Megumi

Kurama (蔵馬, Kurama), known as Shuichi Minamino (南野秀一, Minamino Shūichi) in the human world, is a demon who fused himself with an unborn human child. Kurama is originally a cold-hearted demon thief who becomes injured by a bounty hunter. He fuses himself to the unborn child of Shiori Minamino, and plans to use the body to recover. After living as a human, he eventually becomes attached to his mother and his lifestyle, which causes him to continue living his human life as Shiori's son. He is highly protective of those he cares about and is often merciless to anyone that poses them a threat, a shift in his usually friendly manner. His human form is voiced by Megumi Ogata in Japanese media and John Burgmeier in the Funimation dub. His demon form is voiced by Shigeru Nakahara in Japanese media.

Kurama is generally regarded as calm and level-headed compared to other members of the group. His analytical nature is present in battle where he prefers to study the strengths and weaknesses of his opponents before devising a strategy of his own. Kurama's special ability is that he can turn plants into deadly weapons by manipulating his energy into that plant. Kurama has complete control over any Human Realm plant and has some control over Demon Realm plants. His main weapon is a Rose Whip (ローズ ウイップ/薔薇棘鞭刃, Bara Shibenjin, lit. Rose Thorny Whip-blade), which is able to easily cut through steel. Under certain circumstances, he is able to change into his demon form, whose personality has split from the human Kurama. His demon form is much stronger and he has better control over Demon plants. Kurama eventually decides to never return to this form again and remain completely human.

Hiei

Hiei (飛影, Hiei) is a hybrid fire and ice demon who befriends Yusuke. His mother is forced to abandon him as a child because of his mixed nature, which leads to him kill to survive most of his life. He has a special jewel made out of his mother's tear, though he eventually loses it. He takes the Jagan implant from Shigure, which reduces him to a D-Class demon, in order to find it and his village. He seeks out his village and learns that he has a twin sister, Yukina, who is no longer in the village. He gives up on his search for the jewel and seeks out his sister instead. Shigure has Hiei swear an oath never to tell Yukina that he is her brother as payment for the eye, although he doesn't plan to tell her either way. He is voiced by Nobuyuki Hiyama in Japanese media and Chuck Huber in the Funimation dub. Kirk Thornton provides the character's voice in YuYu Hakusho: The Movie and James Stanley voices him in YuYu Hakusho, The Movie: Poltergeist Report.

Hiei has some pyrokinetic and cryokinetic powers, and a natural resistance to them. He is a master swordsman, having learned under Shigure, capable of moving at extreme speeds. The Jagan (邪眼, Evil Eye) is a third eye on his forehead that grants him various telekinetic powers, including hypnosis, telepathy, and remote viewing. He can transform into a demon form with green skin and eyes sprouting all over his body, which grants him enhanced abilities. He can summon the Dragon of the Darkness Flame (邪王炎殺黒龍波, Jaō Ensatsu Kokuryūha, lit. Tyrant-King's Blaze-Murdering Black-Dragon-Wave), powerful demon energy launched in the form of a dragon that cannot be controlled once released. It causes his arm to be unusable at first, but he eventually learns how to control it better and absorb the energy itself to increase his offensive and defensive abilities while draining energy at a high rate.

Genkai

  • Filipino name: "Master Jeremiah"

Genkai (幻海) is an elderly martial arts expert who lives alone in a very large temple. She is the former lover of Younger Toguro, who eventually becomes a demon after competing in the Dark Tournament. She trains Yusuke and the other after Yusuke wins the tournament to decide her successor. She joins their team in disguise during the Dark Tournament in order to help Yusuke. She eventually transfers most of her power into Yusuke, which leads to her death while fighting Toguro. Yusuke wishes her back to life as his reward for winning the tournament. She helps Yusuke battle Sensui and prepare to leave to the demon world afterward. She eventually dies and leaves her temple to Yusuke and his friends.

She is the creator of the Spirit Wave (修の拳}, Shuu no Ken, lit. Fist of Mastery), a powerful technique capable of eradicating evil energy. By manipulating her energy, Genkai can temporarily revert to the state of a twenty year old woman, which is when she was at the peak of her power. She is voiced by Hisako Kyōda (Older) and Megumi Hayashibara (Younger) in the Japanese anime and Linda Young in the Funimation dub.

Yukina

Yukina (雪菜) is the kind, thoughtful, and somewhat naïve twin sister of Hiei. Yukina was born as an ice apparition (Kōrime, 氷女, literally Ice Woman), who have abilities relating to snow and ice, light healing abilities, and tears that become valuable gems (known in Japanese as the hiruiseki stones). At some point, Yukina was kidnapped by an associate of the BBC, but gets rescued by Yusuke, Kuwabara, Botan, and Hiei. Yukina later finds out about her brother, and searches out to find him, she asked Hiei to help since Hiei seems to be of the same tribe as the description of her brother. Yukina is also the love interest of Kazuma Kuwabara, and while she is not aware of this, unlike most characters she prefers to address him by his given name, Kazuma. At the end of the manga, she is currently living with Kazuma and his family, but in the anime, she stays with Genkai. Hiei is said to be her twin, but he never told her instead during the Three Kings saga he tells her that her twin might be dead and that she should give up looking for him.

Allies

Atsuko Urameshi

Atsuko Urameshi (浦飯温子 Urameshi Atsuko) is Yusuke's alcoholic mother, who gave birth to him at 15. Atsuko wants nothing more than for her son to turn out better than her, but does not succeed. While Yusuke rarely gets along with her, she truly cares about him, crying at his funeral. Like her son, Atsuko can see and sense demons. She rarely appears in the anime (notably in the Dark Tournement Saga, which she attends in the manga, but not in the anime), and is mostly seen in the first saga.

Shizuru Kuwabara

Shizuru Kuwabara (桑原静流 Kuwabara Shizuru) is Kazuma Kuwabara's tough older sister with a sixth sense stronger than her brother's.[3] Similar to Yusuke's mother, Shizuru wants her brother to make something of himself. In the anime, she plays the parts that Atsuko (who is not present for the tournament) played in the manga, and also falls in love with Team Toguro's leader Sakyo, who saves her life twice, though she doesn't learn of his true identity until the end. Following the Chapter Black saga, Shizuru, tired of seeing her brother endanger his life, forces him to keep up in school.

Shizuru, who is 17 at the start of the series, aspires to be a beautician.[3]

Asato Kido

Asato Kido (木戸亜沙斗 Kido Asato) is friends with Yu Kaito and Mitsunari Yanagisawa. Despite admitting that he does not enjoy living in his hometown of Mushiyori, he becomes determined to protect it after learning that Sensui is threatening it. Like his friends, Kido gained psychic powers through the portal to the demon plane. Kido has the power to paralyze someone by stepping on their shadow, and can move his own shadow independently from his body to affect objects in the natural world to a limited degree (like writing his attacker's name in blood). After Sensui is defeated, Genkai tells them to never use their powers again.

Yu Kaito

  • Age: 17

Yu Kaito (海藤優 Kaitō Yū) is an extremely intelligent literary genius. He is characterized as an over-achiever, who is unable to cope with defeat, as seen resents the fact that Kurama is superior to him, and also during his fight with Gamemaster where Kaito finds difficultly in accepting that he was unable to find the complex equation hidden in the game. He is friends with Asato Kido and Mitsunari Yanagisawa. He forms a rivalry of sorts with Kurama, who is in his class at his school and scored higher on every test than Kaito, with the exceptions being language and literature. Kaito is serious, intelligent and addicted to video games. Kaito's main power is to turn words or letters into "Taboo", and anyone who says the word, or uses all letters of that world in the same uninterrupted order, within ten meters from him loses their soul. Kaito also had a small "fight" with Amanuma and loses, though, after Amanuma's death, asks Koenma to bring him back to life. After Sensui is defeated, Genkai tells them to never use their powers again. He is seen again in the Three Kings saga and surpasses Kurama in class rank, due to Kurama making a calculation mistake on a test as a result of stress.

Mitsunari Yanagisawa

Mitsunari Yanagisawa, often called "Yana" for short, is friends with Asato Kido and Yu Kaito, and the three get angry when Sensui's Seven plan on destroying their hometown. Yana seems to not know what the latest fads are or what normal people usually do, and occasionally is prone to believing that he is not capable of rising to a task. Yana can copy a person's DNA, memories, abilities and all other traits through touch, which can only be reversed through his will or inflicted pain. After Sensui is defeated, Genkai tells them to never use their powers again.

Pu

Pu (romanized as Pu in the English manga and Puu in the English anime) is Yusuke's spirit beast. Yusuke received his egg in the second episode. Koenma explained that a spirit beast would feed off its owner's energy and take its form based on the nature of the energy. In other words, if Yusuke is good, the creature inside it would reflect Yusuke. If Yusuke is bad, the bad energy would turn the creature inside the egg evil and when it would hatch, the beast would eat Yusuke, leaving nothing, not even a spirit. Yusuke at first gave up the egg to save Keiko. Eventually, the egg did hatch. The beast is a good, cute, plump little blue bird with huge ears to fly. It also had Yusuke's hair. Although he hated Pu first, he grew to love Pu after Pu saved him during his training in the Dark Tournament by giving him a drink of water, and realizing what it had done, summoned his strength to bring it to Genkai for her to heal him. When Yusuke's demonic genes awaken, Pu becomes a larger and more realistic bird, able to carry Yusuke to his last fight with Sensui. By the end of the series, Pu lives with Genkai.

Rinku

Rinku (鈴駒, Rinku) is a child demon who uses yo-yos to attack. Rinku is childish and playful, and often annoys those around him. He was a partner of Chu's during the Dark Tournament, and defeated Kuwabara during the first round. In the Saga of the Three Kings, Rinku trains under Genkai to become an A+ Class demon and joins the Makai Tournament, though doesn't make it far in the Tournament. In addition to this he also starts to help train other spiritual fighters.

Chu

Chu (酎)was the leader of a team in the Dark Tournament, which Rinku was a member of. Chu is a typical drunkard, often skipping letters and always smelling like booze. Chu also has a strong sense of honor, and is a battle junkie. Chu's specializes in the "Drunken Fist", which fuses his demon energy with alcohol. Chu fights and loses to Yusuke during the Dark Tournament. During the Saga of the Three Kings, Chu trains under Genkai to become an A+ Class demon and joins the Makai Tournament, though automatically surrenders in the preliminaries to a demon girl named Natsume, on whom he has a crush. He speaks with an Australian accent and slang in the English adaption of the anime.

Touya

  • Voice Actor: Daniel Katzuk

Touya is the ice master of the shinobi of the spirit world. His team, Mashoutsukai, competed in the Dark Tournament, hoping to claim the island it was held on as their own. They had spent most of their lives in darkness, so over time, they developed a desire for the light. Touya is perhaps the one who desires it the most, for of his team, he is probably the most mature and experienced. He despises cowardly and dishonorable acts, and stood up to Risho, the team leader, when Risho tried to win against Team Urameshi using low and cowardly means, stating that it would dishonor Gama's sacrifice.

Touya returns later in the series during the Makai Tournament saga. He makes it past the preliminaries, but is barely defeated by one of Raizen's old friends. Before his fight, he gives Kurama the answer to a question Kurama had asked him during the Dark Tournament. Kurama had asked him what he would do after he found the light. At the time, Touya had no answer, replying simply that the light came first. Now he has his answer; he will fight.

Jin

Jin (陣) was a member of the Dark Tournament alongside Toya. Jin is cheerful with a sunny disposition, and strongly believes fighters should enjoy their battles. Jin has pointed ears that get pricked up when he gets excited. Jin can manipulate wind, ranging from floating in the air to creating full-blown tornadoes. Jin fought and lost to Yusuke in the Dark Tournament, though the battle was counted as a tie. In the Saga of the Three Kings, Jin trains under Genkai to become an A-Class demon and joins the Makai Tournament, though doesn't make it far in the Tournament. Speaks in with a Tohoku accent in the original Japanese and in an Irish accent in the English dub.

Shishiwakamaru

  • Voice Actor: Chris Bevins

Shishiwakamaru (死々若丸) was the member of Team Uraotogi in the Dark Tournament. Shishiwakamaru's name is a pun on Ushiwakamura, a famous historic general. Shishiwakamaru is human in appearance, but actually a tiny imp, and is able to take the form of a human-like demon. He is usually sadistic and cruel, and also had a large number of female fans. His main weapon is his blade, the Banshee Shriek, which has the power to steal other souls and release them as either attacks or defenses. Shishiwakamaru defeated Kuwabara in the Dark Tournament, but lost to Genkai. In the Saga of the Three Kings, Shishiwakamaru trains under Genkai to become an A-Class demon and joins the Makai Tournament, though doesn't make it far in the Tournament.

Suzuki

Suzuki (美しい魔闘家鈴木, Utsukushii Matōka Suzuki), known as Suzuka in the Funimation dub, was a member of Team Uraotogi who specialized in creating weapons specifically for others. In the past, Suzuki, then known as Tanaka, lost miserably to Younger Toguro, and made it his goal to defeat him, but never became strong enough to do so until after Younger Toguro's death. Suzuki usually dresses up as a clown, and also disguised himself as an old man named Onji during the Tournament, in order to make himself fight harder because of his hatred of old people. Suzuki believes that he is beautiful and everyone else is ugly, and wishes to create an empire of people who worship him. Suzuki's main abilities are based around manipulating his demon energy into powerful blasts. Suzuki defeated Kuwabara in the Dark Tournament, but lost to Genkai. He later reappears giving Kuwabara and Kurama weapons to help them against Team Toguro. In the Saga of the Three Kings, Suzuki trains under Genkai to become an A+ Class demon and joins the Makai Tournament, though does not make it far in the Tournament.

Antagonists

Rando

Rando is a demon who is able to copy techniques. He kills 99 martial arts masters for their techniques and plans on using Genkai's tournament, devised to determine her successor, to gain his one hundredth. He disguises himself as a young monk, though he eventually reveals himself. He is eventually defeated by Yusuke after a technique meant to shirk Yusuke backfires on himself.

Four Saint Beasts

The Four Saint Beasts are Genbu, Byakko, Seiryu, and Suzaku. They are four demons who rule an area in the demon world called "Demon City". They begin sending demands to the Underworld to give them access to the human world, which they hope to take over. When the Underworld refuses, they send demon bugs into several humans to warp their minds and use them as hostages. Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama, and Hiei are sent to Demon City to defeat them, and succeed.

Team Toguro

Team Toguro are the primary antagonists of the Dark Tournament saga. They manage to reach the final round of the Dark Tournament, but lose to Team Urameshi.

Younger Toguro

Younger Toguro is a very muscular demon who takes an interest in Yusuke Urameshi. He constantly feel emptyness within himself, which he attempts to fill with power. He originally is the teammate and lover of Genkai. They participate in Dark Tournament fifty years prior to the series, joining to kill a demon who slaughtered their disciples, and after emerging as victors, Younger Toguro wishes to become a demon. He gains the ability to manipulate his muscles depending on what percentage of power that he uses. When at 100%, he must devour the souls of those nearby to keep his almost indestructible body energized. He eventually realizes that he is looking for a stronger opponent to defeat him, which comes in the form of Yusuke. In the afterlife, he asks to be sent to the last circle of hell, which is 10,000 years of torture for 10,000 cycles until the soul ceases to exist, despite protests from Genkai and Koenma. He is voiced by Tesshō Genda in Japanese media and Dameon Clarke in the English dub.

Elder Toguro

Elder Toguro is Younger Toguro's unpleasant and sadistic elder brother. He usually rides on his brother's shoulder, and often fights alonside him. Elder Toguro can alter the shape of his body to form weapons out of his body parts or move organs to escape harm, and also has powerful regenerative abilities, almost to the point of immortality. He is reduced to remains by his brother and later found by Sensui. Makihara the "Gourmet" eats him in order to gain his powers, but he manages to take over Makihara's body. He is eventually bound to a cursed tree by Kurama, which leaves him in an eternal state of suffering. He is voiced by Katsumi Suzuki in Japanese media and Bill Townsley in English media.

Karasu

Karasu is a demon defeated by the Toguro brothers several years before the series. He is calm and collected, though he is very sadistic. He can create explosives, and can even use his demon energy cause objects to explode without contact. After taking off his lower facial mask, Karasu's hair turns blond, and he can use a powerful full-body explosion. He is killed while fighting Kurama. He is voiced by Ryō Horikawa in Japanese media and Kyle Hebert in English media.

Bui, like Karasu, is defeated by the Toguro brothers. Bui is easily defined by his heavy armor, which is used to contain his gigantic strength increasing aura, and an axe larger than his body. He fights Hiei and loses, though he survives afterward. He is voiced by Tetsuo Kaneo in Japanese media and Vic Mignogna in English media.

Sakyo

Sakyo is the very calm, collected, intelligent, and wealthy owner of Team Toguro. He is also a member of the BBC, which mainly consists of rich old men that bet on various competitions, including fights between demons. He often wagers his own life in bets, which helps him against others. He plans on using the wish from the Dark Tournament to further his own goals. He bets his life in the final battle, and after the team's loss, he self destructs the arena, which kills him. He is voiced by Nobuyuki Furuta in the Japanese series and Eric Vale in the English dub.

Shinobu Sensui

Shinobu Sensui (仙水忍, Sensui Shinobu) is a former Spirit Detective whose personal views of humans being good natured and demons being evil are twisted after a mission to stop humans from torturing demons for fun. Later, a tape in the Reikai that achieved storing all records of the darkest sides of human history is lost along with Sensui's disappearance. He decides that humans are truly evil, and decides to wipe out humanity by breaking the barrier between the two worlds. He partners with Itsuki (闇撫の樹), a demon able to traverse different dimensions that becomes attracted to Sensui over a period of time. He wishes for Sensui to be his lover and he is very protective of him. The two find five humans with special abilities and use them to carry out their plans. His plan eventually fails after he is killed by Yusuke. Itsuki reveals that Sensui was to die in a month anyways from a terminal illness and then takes Sensui's body into another dimension for the rest of his existence.

Sensui developed six other personalities to carry his various burdens, with the original personality staying pure. Minoru, a suave manipulator, is in control most of the time, Kazuya is a violent personality that forms a gun over one of his arms, and Naru is a female personality that composes poetry and the one that Itsuki loves the most. Sensui is a master of Resshūken (裂蹴拳), an elegant fighting style that is said to be only available to users that master all forms of martial arts, and he added his own power, Holy light energy (聖光気, Seikōki), a special type of energy that is said to be the purest energy, forming the fighting style called Reikōresshūken (霊光裂蹴拳). He is able to use the energy to create two special sets of armor that focus on offense and defense. Sensui is voiced by Naya Rokuro in Japanese media and Robert McCollum in English media.

The other members of Sensui's group are humans with special abilities. Kaname Hagiri (刃霧要, Hagiri Kaname), known as Sniper, is able to send any object flying towards an opponent at high speed. Minoru Kamiya (Kamiya Minoru), known as Doctor, uses his medical knowledge to heal and manipulate his own body and create demon parasites that spread a psychic disease. While he thinks of humans diseased at first, he eventually atones by using his abilities to heal people. Kiyoshi Mitarai (御手洗清志, Mitarai Kiyoshi), known as Seaman, is a troubled teen capable of creating creatures by fusing his blood with water. He fights against and loses to Kuwabara, but agrees to help Yusuke save Kuwabara after Botan saves his life. Tsukihito Amanuma' (天沼月人, Amanuma Tsukihito), known as Gamemaster, is able to bring video games to life. He loses a game to Yusuke and his companions, resulting in his death, though he is brought back to life by Koenma. Sadao Makihara' (巻原定男, Makihara Sadao), known as Gourmet, is able to eat beings and gain their powers. He eats Elder Toguro, who then takes over Makihara's body.

Makai

Raizen

Raizen' (雷禅, Raijin) is the strongest of the Three Kings, and Yusuke's ancestor. Hundreds of years before the series, he is injured and later nursed back to health by a human woman. He falls in love and impregnates her, and later vows to never eat humans again. He starves and weakens over hundreds of years. Yusuke eventually appears and Raizen trains him until his death. His kingdom is passed on to Yusuke, who manages to avoid war with the other kings. He is voiced by Takayuki Sugō in Japanese media and Chris Sabat in English media.

Mukuro

Mukuro () is a female member of the Three Kings. After being abandoned at birth, she is adopted by another demon and turned into a sex slave. She eventually pours acid on her body to escape his desires, which leads to him placing extremely strong shackles on her. She escapes, eventually replaces the right side of her body with metal and machinery, assumes the identity of a man, and becomes a ruthless killer. She eventually finds Hiei while preparing for war, placing him as her second in command, and becomes close to him. During the tournament, she faces Hiei and wins, though his main goal is to break her shackles. This quells much of her hatred, which leads to her eventual loss. Afterward, Hiei captures her adoptive father, whom she can not kill because of special mental modification on her mind, and merges him with a plant that constantly heals him, allowing her to torture him at her pleasure. She is voiced by Minami Takayama in Japanese media and Wendy Powell in English media.

Shigure

Shigure is a demon surgeon who implants Hiei with his Jagan eye. Shigure charges his customers with weird requests, such as an "interesting story" or a promise, rather than money. After implanting Hiei with the Jagan eye, Shigure trains Hiei as a swordsman, warning him the other demons will attempt to find and kill Hiei once they learn he has weakened. After Hiei leaves, Shigure has Hiei promise to never tell Yukina that she is Hiei's sister, though Hiei doesn't plan on it. He later fights Hiei for the position of Mukuro's second in command. He has his head sliced in two, though Mukuro manages to save his life afterward. He then fights Kurama in the tournament and loses.

Yomi

Yomi (黄泉) is the newest of the Three Kings. He is the former second in command to Kurama's brigand prior to Kurama placing his soul into a mortal. Yomi, however, was reckless, losing countless men in unauthorized raids and direct confrontation, thinking it more exciting that way. Kurama, angered, sent an assassin to kill him, who failed but blinded Yomi. Yomi then grew extra ears and tuned his senses so acutely he could eventually hear all within his kingdom. He plans to take over both the demon and human planes, calling on Kurama to his side. He fights Yusuke in the tournament, barely winning after hearing Shura's shout, and loses the next round due to his injuries. Yomi then leaves to properly raise and train Shura, thanking Yusuke for helping him achieve a sense of peace he could not have attained on his own. He is voiced by Masashi Ebara in Japanese media and Rick Robertson in English media.

Shura

Shura (修羅) is the cloned son of Yomi. He is created so that Yomi will have a better chance of winning. He fights Yomi in the tournament preliminaries, and refuses to back down, but is defeated. He eventually gives up and cheers his father on afterward, helping him win against Yusuke.
